To be fair, Jones, Hughes and Sutcliffe all played yesterday for Peel, Nyhuis was the only emergency who didn’t play.

Should we have played Darcy, Jones and STRNADICA yesterday, with the benefit of hindsight, you’d have to say, no we shouldn’t have.

Whilst there were many terrible performers out there today wearing purple I am still struggling to work out why we drafted Matera. Another poor game from him today, in fact I am struggling to remember a decent game he has played for us thus far. At least he is consistent with his lack of application and goals. To me he has been a total waste of a trade and deserves to spend the rest of the season at Peel until he demonstrates he has a sufficient appetite for a contest and actually puts in some effort.

Fair point....I agree, hindsight is a wonderful thing!.
But, ...-I dunno - we've played a 35/36 yr old ruckman as a single ruck for most of the 1st half of the year.

Even if we hadn't been, I reckon for this 2nd half of the season - coming off a bye or not - you have some form of 195-200cm bloke "warmed up and ready to go" for every match...just as an insurance.

Would not have saved us today, but ...well....poor preparation seemed to be the theme of today.

And, all at Freo need to carry that - not just the players.

Not using the bye as an excuse, but why can't they just make round 12 or 13 a split round so that teams are all playing teams off a week off etc.

The scary thing was that going into the 4th quarter, the number of freo players who still had touched the ball less than fyfe who was off from early in the 2nd quarter, thats damning.

Ballas kicking 2 late is probably enough to save his spot but it shouldn't be, he seriously did nothing all day. I would rather see crowden in there getting pinged a few times for holding the ball but at least he will be doing something. Matera wasn't much better.. Fingers crossed Grey stays injury free because that is the only thing keeping ballas in the team as a small fwd option.

Apeness was good, Martin is quality and he held his own considering, just not enough ruck support so of course he was going to tire.

It almost felt like it was one of those games where absolutely nothing went right for us. Was it an aberration?

Even iff benell only played half a game next week or played out of Full Forward, he would have 5 times the impact as a few out there today. Depending though if they want peel to try and beat Subi, but I expect to see at least brad hill and hopefully darcy in. Duman seems to have had an outing as well.,

had the pleasure of having a member of our initial squad sitting next to me ,as a guest of a mate of mine.
he cannot believe the crap that is being displayed as aussie rules footy.
even though he had been out of the game a while,he was fully switched on as to where the players were going to put the ball,and was equally upset when they did not do the most obvious thing.which as we all know happened a lot today.
until the game is anywhere near what it should be ,it's going nowhere.
he is happy that the afl is actually doing something about it.
whether it amounts to anything ,well who knows.
he was full of praise of what neesham was trying to do,but lamented all the draft prospects that went to other clubs.
we traded to try and get quick success.

I had been thinking the AFLs ridiculous zones trial might actually save Roly from himself, but the problem is you still have to coach the players to move the ball quickly to get to those players who are stuck in their forward zone before the other team can get back and provide extra cover. I don’t think we’ll be able to do that with our current coaching staff, we are completely stagnant when we have the ball in hand, no one provides leads or tries to break the opponents zone so we end up bombing it down the line to a contest every time.
We never seem to out number our opponents through the corridor so cannot create an overlap and run straight through the middle (something other teams do to us all the time) so I don’t know how any rule changes will help, other than helping other teams open the game up and score even more against us!

DS, our problems start with the ludicrous theory that "attack starts from defense, so lets put everyone back behind the ball til we get it then sprint forward". The reason teams rebound off us is because if they intercept the ball coming into the forward line, they have 4 unmarked options behind or square of them, which releases any pressure. If they turn it over or kick in from a point, our players are that stuffed from running they have trouble getting back to man up between centre and our forward 50. Zones may save Lyon's career, but they won't save the game or Freo.

Im struggling to see how 'new zone rules'' would 'save RoLys carreer???
I would have thought new rules such as that would be the quickest way to end his (bloody) carreer'!
The bloke has shown absolutely no desire / ability / cognizance to change "his style", and new rules would render him completely useless.
Espcially rules that are specifically designed to prevent the mainstay of RoLys "gameplan" that 18 players have to be around the ball no matter where it is....

Bring the new rules in as quickly as possible I say....
