TOPIC: Apeness vs Darcy

It’ll take Darcy 5-6 years or more to be dominant. Our vision is 2020. Clearly we’re one forward from being relevant again. I see the Kelly trade as a win. Fyfe plays a permanent forward role and the rest is history. Apeness, Dixon, Tabs etc will hold their end up. Geelong needs a ruckman more than us, it’s a no brainer.

Darcy is a left-handed ruckman, that is a real advantage where most are right-handers and have to change their angles. The kid can ruck.

I don't get this place sometimes...

Darcy's been out for a few months with injury when prior to that you could have reasonably expected him to be gradually taking over the ruck load this year. In his absence there was some concern about Sandi's fatigue with that openly discussed at around the 6th week of the season.

We end up with a sort of patchwork fix for that forced to a degree by Sandi's concussion... and because that solution worked quite well (and opened a few eyes as to the potential across the list as a bonus) suddenly, perhaps dazzled by shiny new things, people are trying to off load Darcy?

I could go on about Sandi's approaching retirement and back up players and all that but bugger it. It's easier and just as logical to blame John Howard for everything up until the emergence of Trump and fake news.

I don't know how to argue with this. We can pick up a Kelly or better player in the draft this year for nothing but a low pick. Just look at the likes of Banfield, Crowden and Giro who were low picks, far younger than Kelly and have shown just as much if not more in a young side with far less help.

Darcy could be and is looking like the next great ruckman of the decade. It's not even a debate that trade would be horrible.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Jezza, keep an eye on your glass, RoLy is slipping something into your Kool-Aid. We got the deal last year getting a first round draft pick for nothing, from GC. Why would we have everyone laughing at us this year for giving someone like Darcy away for nothing this year? It took him 8 games to be in the top echelon of ruckman last year, if it takes him 15 this time in I would be happy.

We have been lamenting the lack of a genuine replacement ruckman, and genuine replacement forward for the last 6 years. We now have them, and you want to get rid of 1 and turn the other into something he is not. Lyon coaching 101 I know, but that does not mean it is right.

Pretty sure both Sandi and Mundy will be playing in 2019. We suddenly got an abundance of ruckman albeit very inexperienced. I doubt both Apeness or Darcy is in our best 22, if Sandi plays on. Which means Darcy or Apeness will be fringe benefits. So, Darcy while a rookie has currency especially in Geelong’s eyes. Not sure of Darcy’s current contract situation, I’d be surprised if the Cat’s haven’t picked up the phone. Cerra and Brayshaw will be 10 years in the engine room. Throw in Kelly, then suddenly those plebs up the road will start to get nervous if they’re not already.

Jezza, Freo were the ONLY club who were willing to give Darcy a chance. He seems to me to be the type of fella who rates that highly, as evidenced by his attitude once he got out on the ground last year. He will repay us in spades, and we would be crazy to give him a chance of playing against us.

You guys are nuts - don't let Jezza wind you up so much that the stupids come creeping in. And - what is this, you go out with a dicky knee and you lose your nickname?

My thoughts:
Hodor is a bowling ball in the forward 50 - talk about crashing a pack, this kid creates a wasteland taking a mark. He's got a good straight kick, great hands, good speed and (most importantly) a fair measure of the footy smarts. Invaluable - best draftee in 3 years by a country mile.

Apeness is a full forward - he can do other things (like pinch hitting in the ruck). He's been good, let's see how he goes until Tabs is up to speed. If you want someone to beat Grundy/Gawn, Hodor's your man.

But if you've got Sandi on your list, he plays - he's still the best - it would be madness to have him sitting in the stands.

Also, I like Kelly a lot - but until you re-sign Langdon, Cerra and a couple of others, pay attention to your own barn.

A concussion injury often puts footy and life into perspective, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sandi pulled the pin as he wouldn’t be leaving the club in as difficult position as it would have this year.
As we now appear to be dispassionate to the history and legacy of the club, trade Sandi to Geelong for Kelly?

With 9 games left and possibly gaining momentum, our best 22 cannot have both Apeness and Darcy in the side while Sandi is up and about. I can see us winning 6-7 of those 9 games, given 6 of those are at home. We’ve still got Son Son and Bradley to come back in. Tabs is a long shot. I think Darcy could find himself on the outer if Apeness continues to take contested marks and provide invaluable support to Sandi. This season is far from over just as I forecast.

Sorry Polly.

Jezza, given your track record of what is best for Freo, I take your assertion that we cannot play Darcy and Apeness in the same team as Sandi with a certain amount of reservation. I for one think it would be a great idea, as it would force us to play to our strengths, and give our talented mids a chance to feed the footy quickly into our forward line. This is what has worked for us in the last couple of weeks, and to make it work we need big strong targets, who will be available all the time. If we need a forward to get back and help the defense out, play Cox as well. It will mess with the defensive plans of a few opposition coaches.

Here's a radical thought, why don't we use players to their best advantage and not try to change them into something else. You know, the way successful coaches do things.

Darcy is a ruckman. Lets keep him as a ruckman and Sandi's replacement when he pulls the pin. Let's keep Apeness and Tabs as tall forwards who can pinch hit in the ruck when needed. Let just not try and turn a quality ruckman into a midfielder while turning forwards into second string ruckman.

Its not rocket surgery
