Darcy is second only to Sandi as a ruckman on our list, to say he is no good up forward is about as far-sighted as saying Apeness is our next first ruck. Apeness looks good, but he has a little way to go yet to prove himself as a key forward, let alone lead the ruck. Darcy was good leading the ruck last year, and some of us were looking forward to seeing him share the ruck and key forward slot with Sandi.

All the great coaches coached to the strengths of their teams, they didn't try to force their teams to play a style that did not suit the list. While many people believe the game has gone past the big fellers, Everyone still raves about how great Grundy, NN, Kruizer, Jacobs, Goldberg and Sandi are for their respective teams, and all supporters are looking for big forwards to kick goals, and big defenders to stop them. If we rested a few of our less accurate mids and got them to upskill their disposal, and played our mids that can hit a target time after time, we might start beating teams by 15 - 20 goals again.

You mean when Grundy had 48 hit outs (and the most votes from the coaches) to Apeness 17 and monstered him in the ruck, leading to the Pies midfield racking up possessions at will? I really don't know how you construct your arguments Jezza!

It was Apeness around the ground work and ability to be dangerous forward that proved promising in that game and those after it. He had 17 touches and pushed forward to kick a goal vs Grundy and that is the role he is best suited for.

His best game was on the weekend where he was able to stay forward more and pinch hit in the ruck against a lesser ruckman where he is far more effective. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, he should be our Josh Jenkins, kicking a few bags forward while pinch hitting in the ruck and making the opposition ruckman accountable when he goes forward.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

He had a fantastic year in 2017 but isn't a key position forward (certainly not yet anyway) and doesn't clunk marks like an Apeness, Cox or Taberner - is a far cry from saying "he is no good up forward".

He has not shown anything forward yet as he had 10 games in the ruck on his own in his first season. He wasn't clunking a tonne of contested marks around the ground but he did look promising with his size and bulk in a contest. The others have shown more up forward at this point but that doesn't mean he couldn't potentially in the future (which is why I said "not yet anyway").

He's just come back from a knee injury so he won't be getting that gig any time soon. Our forwards have to run far too much under most RL line ups as evidenced by Cox and Crowden leading our distance covered stats in recent weeks.

It was Grundy at his best no doubt. But what you don't see on TV is perhaps what I'm basing my view on Biz. Those hitout numbers tell half the story. Grundy had 18 disposals, 10 contested, Apeness had 17 disposals, 11 contested. Sometimes it pays to watch games live, you might learn something.

So Jezza, you say the hitout number don't tell the story......and then quote different numbers.

Basically, what it boils down to is that Grundy won the ruck dual and evened out the rest of the game.

Sometimes it pays to be accurate rather than fiddling stuff to fill an agenda.

It might pay to read what I wrote too! "It was Apeness around the ground work and ability to be dangerous forward that proved promising in that game and those after it. He had 17 touches and pushed forward to kick a goal vs Grundy and that is the role he is best suited for."

Those possession numbers as I said above were indicative of his work rate and ability to influence a contest. It wasn't much to do with his actual rucking. We may as well play Fyfe as our ruck again if we're gonna ignore hitouts for ruckman and focus on how many touches they get.

It's because he is good with contested balls and dishing out a handpass that he is so effective as a leading forward even if his hands aren't quite clunking every mark just yet. He still provides a contest and wins or halves a footy which is very handy up forward holding the ball up and not letting the opposition defence run away with an easy mark and rebound. He also covers the ground reasonably well which allows him to get to repeat contests.

His actual ruckwork isn't going to beat the best ruckman but against their second option, he will dominate. That he provides a good option forward in the mean time is fantastic.

The agenda was about Sandi’s backup or more to the point, who replaces the great man. Darcy, a great pickup, is really still a rookie. Apeness on the other hand is in his 5th year and barring injury would have been another great draft pick. I saw the Grundy v Apeness duel as a promising one for Apeness. Had Apeness not been cruelled by injuries, who knows. The following week I witnessed Grundy v Gawn. I thought Apeness did better against Grundy. So numbers aside, and I know some rely on it to support their opinions, Apeness is no slouch.

Jezza heard Lyon say that Apeness was more of a ruckman and that's essentially where his belief lies.

Apeness looks like your perfect second ruckman/forward. He'll never carry the ruck, he doesn't have the size or the leap to do that. But a great second option indeed. Honest as the day.

Don't know what the future holds for Taberner and Macarthy if this Dixon fella is as good as people are telling me.

Interesting times down at Fremantle.

Geelong need a ruckman, isn’t Darcy from down that way ?
They’ll either be a media love for him because he’s a Victorian or be underrated till they get him and he’ll be a star, no matter how good a player.

Glad you brought that up ICON, the jungle noise starting to get louder about Tim Kelly wanting to not sign anymore than his initial rookie contract. I’d swap Darcy for Kelly in a heart beat.

If we're really moving forward, it's time to play Darcy as the number one ruck and the Ape as the forward/fill in ruck.

Sandi has been great for this club but it's time for him to retire and we can prepare for life after Sandi,.

We only have a first round draft pick this year so we retire Sandi ,Johnson , Pearce, Spurr and Ballantyne, spend up big on unrestricted/ restricted players , the rebuild will be complete and we start to attack the top eight.

Ignoring that you don't rate ruckman on their ability to ruck, in what possible way is that trade deal anything but horrible for us?!

We lose the best up and coming ruckman in the game (which is an incredibly rare commodity) for a 25yo midfield rookie looking ok in a midfield behind the likes of Danger, Ablett, Selwood, Duncan, Menegola and more? Not to mention Kelly will only have a couple years left and is a dime a dozen midfielder compared to Darcy with more than a decade ahead in an incredibly hard to fill position (maybe a dozen or so good ruckman in the entire AFL atm).

That's more crazy than usual Jezza.
