Yeah RM,

theres only one who banging on about great coaching, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

The good things are the things that people on here have been wanting for a while. Things like 2 talls forward including Apeness finally getting a chance to show what he has to offer. Neale had one of his better games for a while. Fyfe was...well absolutely Fyfe-able.

We played Sandi and Apeness and both performed well in the ruck. Now imagine having Tabs added to that. That would cover both rucking duties and 2 talls in the forward line and we still have Cox as well.

Matera had one of his better games and Hamling was huge even in the absence of Pearce.

To me, it shows the criticisms of the playing group are overstated and we have the core of a workable list. We just need to do the same things against better sides.

I'd agree that going back to the 2013 - 15 style isn't the way to go forward but yesterday will show you what we should be aiming at.

I'm looking forward to the Brisbane game and hopefully, we play the same way.

Actually, Jezza, what you say isn't correct.

teams coming off a bye often don't win the following week. This weekend 3 of the 4 teams coming off the bye, lost. Only Hawthorn won and they played Adelaide who are ravaged by injury anyway.

From memory, that matches up with events from previous years. The extra break doesn't provide much assistance for a win.

edit: last year, 7 sides won coming off a bye (including one of GF teams and other top 4 teams) and 9 lost coming off a bye, so the assistance given by coming off a bye is a just a tad overstated

Yeti, I was not convinced Apeness had the ability to make it at top level, but yesterday showed he has a good footy brain, and the all round skills to go with that. I look forward also to seeing him Cox and Taberner lining up in our forward line. It will give Tabs a chance to play across half forward and be the target for our backline.

I'm not sure whether you forgot Darcy, or just reckon he should bide his time, but with that forward line up we could afford to change him and Sandi off the bench. For those who reckon you can't play that many big fella's, I say you can, you just have to play to their strengths.

I also thought Kersten again was serviceable, he took good options when he had the footy and was the outlet for a player under what pressure there was, but he needs to impose himself physically on contests, at the moment he is pulling up short and not crunching the player or pack. He has the advantage of being able to play at both ends of the ground as well, which makes him a bench option when we are close to full strength.

I didn't know Kersten could roost the ball that far. He has a penetrating kick. With a bit of practice kicking out of the back line he might become as threatening as Wilson.

RM,

I don't think we can play that many talls but its nice for me to think we are developing some depth in that area. Long way to go and small steps taken but there is a lot of potential in those big guys and the future after Sandi is not as bleak as some would have it.

As for Apeness, he's done all he can reasonably do since he came back in. Hopefully, he stays injury free and justifies his first round drafting. I'm happy with what I've sen so far

It was greatseeing Apeness doing what he does best - crashing packs and backup ruck. This will leave Taberner as a lead up forward and Cox as third forward.

Assuming Apeness stays injury-free, Darcy will come in for Sandilands.

Hodor has to bide his time but he will be first choice ruckman soon enough.

Cameron who?

So Yeti, we’re coming off a bye and playing Bris at home. Mark that down to a loss then shall we. Highly unlikely. It’s difficult for a travelling team to win. That’s a fact. But we’re a no excuses club. I’m just a realist. We’re developing a great team. The ingredients are there. Like a good curry, it tastes better when it matures over time. It’ll take a few umps to beat us at home. And it’ll take a good team to beat us away in a little while.

I was a bit concerned going into the game after reviewing Carlton's last game against Sydney where they played a great game for the bottom side. But of course that was all put to bed from what unfolded in the first quarter.

The missed opportunities in the 3rd quarter were concerning, but better to have these in the 3rd than the 1st.

Overall I really liked what I saw especially the unselfish play by Apeness. That kind of play by such a big guy is what's going to create a great forward line going forward.

People like the idea of it but I don't believe that unselfishness is a good quality in a forward. Hopefully someone stamps that out of his game.

Shane,

maybe Roly trained the goalkicking out of him after his game against Adelaide

I know you can only beat who you play but I thought the forward line yesterday were lucky that Carlton were late to the game. They were nowhere near as good as they were against Adelaide and a lot of the goals came from turnovers rather than good attacking football.

I think most of the goals came from turnovers in the first half but thats hardly unusual as most of the goals scored against us this year have been from turnovers.

It seems to a be a trend in the modern game.

That said, thats the reason that I'm not getting carried away (like some) but am enjoying how it worked out. The use of two talls forward did help provide some forward pressure added to the mids kicking goals from the turnovers.

Yes it was Carlton but there are some good signs if we stick with actually trying to kick a score rather than just trying to stop the other guy. Its a lot more attractive that way and the defense only game plan is right up there with dodos (dumb and dead)
