TOPIC: Ross

Many are pointing out that we have a lot of 1st year players and that is part of the reason we are losing. Sort of yes.

I think the reason people are questioning Ross is that it isn’t the young kids causing the problem. It is the Fyfe, Neale, Blakely, Wilson etc that have no plan moving the ball forward apart from blazing into the fwd 50.

We could stomach it and tolerate the problem if it was the Brayshaws of the world. They have got 0 leadership around them.

Someone alluded to it elsewhere, we are playing a brand of football that requires a dominant power forward without even a half decent half forward.

Draft orders are so out of whack most of the time anyhow. I mean we took Sheridan before Sicily. Too early to foresee long term form of draftees...developmental timeline is always different. I like that Brayshaw stays on his feet, as an 18yo! We have many more seasoned players who struggle with this aspect. Was he a top 5 pick...only time will tell. Another three seasons and we shall be able to judge...and even then development continues well into mid twenties.
Defence is always paramount, but starting every game with a spare man back and add a small forward to the back of the centre square at bouncedowns, and the pressure is on for our clearance winning mids to really nail our forwards and for our forwards to read the play a little better.

The one we would die for at the moment besides probably Darling, is Ben Brown. Don't know what draft he was in or who we took before but I doubt whether they would be as valuable.

Sorry to mention Darling in a positive way, but he's having another good game today and i haven't even seen him ducking and playing for free kicks as much this year.

And on young players - I can confidently say I have a terrible record of prediction and can’t see how anyone could be better.

Examples of what I thought of players after their first few games:
After Stephen hills first games I thought he’d be the next Chris Judd
I never thought Sandi would amount to anything
I always thought Fyfe would be good, but sort of picked him as a Chris Mayne type across half forward
I thought Lachie Wellar was the answer to most of our problems
Mundy would never make it
Always loved Pavlich and Haselby
Thought T bone was a crab

Motto - the first few games do not give a reliable prediction of a players career. Brayshaw could be anything, or nothing or anything in between

Ok you want clear
After 9 games you 2 are challenging his ability to be a no 2 draft pick
Is cotchin or Mitchell type no 2 in hindsight or are you chasing or are you the glamorous midfielder

Ben Brown was taken fairly late in the 2013 draft and we took Apeness and Alex Pearce before him which I think were two very good selections. Apeness hasn’t worked out due to injury but he is young and still time to develop into a good forward.

What it does highlight is how important it is to identify talent and take tall forwards when they are available particularly by clubs that don’t have them or have key forwards nearing the end of their careers that need to be replaced.

The fact it took Fremantle until 2013 to start recruiting some talls is bordering on negligence from our football manager and recruitment department.

I didn’t agree with taking two midfielders with pick 2 and 5 last year and although there weren’t standout tall forwards in that draft we still could have taken Brander.

We have one of the best midfields on paper in the competition but they look up and hesitate when moving the ball forward.

Anyone remember Dessie Haynes and Gordon Greenidge? Those 2 knew how to get on the front foot and attack. Some-one get RoLy some of their highlights packages, and see if that can inspire him. If that doesn't work, we have to get CA or Yeti driving buses in Freo.

West Indies cricket glory years. Now you're talking RM.

Alex Pearce before Ben Brown looks okay, KK. But not Apeness. Maybe injuries have cruelled him but even when fit he's shown next to nothing at Peel.

Brayshaw & Cerra's numbers are way up there with all top 20 draftees from last year and especially compared to Rayner and Dow. Banfield is also a bargain. Problem is far worse than quality of these guy's. You can tell evety player is second guessing the first disposal option which then puts them under pressure and ultimately leads to a lot of turnovers.

This soley contributes to lack of confidence and would suggest all coaches are just looking after their line and there is no connection between them. Buck stops with RL and 3 years of same game plan and moving on of assistants indicates he's lost both players and line coaches alike.

Here's some good number 2 picks through the years. I'm sure there are some dud ones too. Whether you want to compare them is up to you but personally I wouldn't.
We don't know where he'll get to but I've said countless times that I hope he does really well. He seems like a great young kid and i think he will be a long term player for us.

Ball, Thomas, Lappin, Roughead, Ottens, haselby, Wells, Koschitzke, Cotchin, Natanui, Coniglio, Kelly, Petracca, Taranto

We're obviously never going to agree, no matter what is put forward or tried to explain. Let's put it this way maybe? If you were the person in charge of recruiting, you would have picked him at number two. I would have picked Stephenson or Brandner.

Have never criticized him, think he will be a long term prospect, glad he's with us, think Cerra looks special but wish he would re-sign, think Banfield was a steal , can't believe he slipped through to the rookie draft, love the way Crowden plays. Tried to cover everything!!

As we keep saying, it is just our opinion and you've got yours. I'm okay with that but you're not, so be it.

Appeness had a knee reco the year before we took him. He certainly has not had a good run.
But to be honest he has been very ordinary even when playing for peel and fit.
Having said that he may need a good 12 months of injury free to be totally fair. But I still put my money That he is a dud.

Ross now says he is a ruckman first than a forward, which is interesting as I thought he was taken at 17 to replace pav.

I’m just excited to see a post about Lyon hijaked to be about something else rather than the usual posts about anything else being hijaked to be about Lyon.

There were no top 5 talls and no top 5 WA kids in the draft. I reckon part of the reason we took Brayshaw was because we considered we were a chance to keep him. Given the hand-wringing about not re-signing Cerra after 9 games, that’s not for nothing.

The kids are fine. Or not. It’s 9 games. If you’re going to question the selection I reckon you needed to put your cards on the table at draft time. Stephenson could be a jet, or he could be out of the league with a heart condition in a year. No-one really knew at draft time.

So why did we draft two more ruckmen instead of a quick half forward, a crumber or key position marking forward when he has admitted he wants pace and forward marking power?
