Jimb, I think you will find the "sack the coach" group are not a minority group here. Also, most of the sack the coach group are of the opinion that we have the players to be successful right now, if they are used properly.

Are you a full quid?

Maybe a few cents short?

Can you tell me a part where I said anything negative about the young bloke whose name we shall not mention? Can you tell me where I said I didn't believe he would be a good solid player for us?

You asked who we could have drafted instead and i came up with alternatives. That's not questioning his ability. I pointed out that I would have preferred a game breaking, x factor type of choice but didn't question his ability to be a solid Neale type player.

As I and others have said, give it a rest so I'll try not to say anything else. My opinion which you don't like is that I don't think he was the second best player going in the draft, but hey let's hope he wins a Brownlow and my quid value drops even further.

But I do resent it being said that I questioned his ability.

Where Freo is at currently did not happen overnight. It was a progression of events that brought us here. Our recruiting for whatever reason never seemed to land a key forward to take over the mantle from Pav as he wasn’t getting any younger and we could all see that the day would eventually come for the great man to hang up his boots. The Harris board was taken up with their need to rebrand and bring about change to our jumpers, to our song, to our location. That board landed the “ big fish” coach in somewhat controversial circumstances. He took us to our first GF but we haven’t achieved the promised sustained success. So far so good.
Then a contract extension of 5 years was handed to Ross and since then the team has had little success. That decision to extend the coach’s contract must rest with the board and the Harris Rosich Bond trifecta. Not many here saw the extension as being in freo’s best interests. Questions have been asked here about the game plan about recruiting about team selection and skills training and these are all legitimate questions. All need to be addressed by the coach and his assistants. The men who handed the coach the job sit silently in the background. Harris has jumped ship maybe the other two need to be nudged a little.

RM, we have a lot of kids playing. The evidence says that these players will typically go up and down in their performance and it takes years to get them to the stage where everyone knows what everyone else will do. Ideally, you would want them in the team for a couple of years before they get onto the park, because this means you already have a strong team. We don't have that luxury. You gate them into the team a couple at a time so they learn how to operate in an already functioning unit, rather than throwing a swarm of them onto the field and hope for the best.

This idea that we already have players that could take us to the top now is emotionally generated hubris. It's just one of those stories that you keep repeating to yourself until it becomes true in your own head. Play us against a skilled well-organised team of mature bodies and we get found out.

Tell me this: Who on our team would be a walk-in to one of the top teams, eg a Richmond best 22 for the GF? I'd say Fyfe, Walters and probably Mundy. A few younger players would certainly get development position but they wouldn't be automatic includes.

To make it a bit more realistic try this. Write down the Richmond team and the Dockers in order of value. Tell them they can swap any of their players players for the same number Freo guy. How many get swapped. I'd say ZERO. (I doubt they'd swap Dusty for Fyfe; Martin is a better kick.) How about you?

Jimb, at the beginning of last year, who out of the Richmond team would you have regarded as premiership players? Ditto Bulldogs the year before? We have the team, we just need a coach who will coach to their strengths, not his.

CA
After 9 games

A solid player nothing out of the box?
Not a number 2 draft pick
What are you questioning?
When Freo took him as no 2 draft pick I would suggest it was exactly his ability as a midfielder so yes you are questioning his ability

Premiership crabs, eh? They have 2 Brownlow medalists, the best backman in the league and other stars like Lambert.

Honestly Rhufus, think before you type.

We absolutely smashed the swans in the guts and the alarms would have been ringing loud for Horse.

Big tick for us.

We still don't know how to find a fwd target. But we will.

Cox plucked a few.
Son son looks good.
We ran out the game well.

I think we could start seeing Sandi as permanent FF.
Darcy and Fyfe to ruck.

Bennell and the Hills delivering into the fwd line will help. Hopefully we can see that within 21 days.

Frustrated with our luck, but very impressed with how we won the ball against a supposedly pretty tough midfield.

Oh yeah, and Langdon is really taking it to an elite level.

Good times ahead, but maybe not soon enough for some.

Dear Hamihill
I’m not sure how else CA can make it any clearer for you. At no stage has he questioned Brayshaw ability. He (and I agree) rate Brayshaw highly but we’re taliking 2nd best player in the draft. I don’t think he has shown the ability we would expect of a number 2 pick. Number 10-20 maybe (still very highly capable and high praise) but not number 2.

There are positives, of course there are. With the ability to win the ball and deliver it yesterday, Freo should have blown the Swans off the park in the first half.

Why didn't that happen?

There's all this talk about not having the players to do it... those players did it yesterday. They've done it before, too.

There's a problem that isn't about having enough class on the list. That list was looking great in the first month of the season, now all sorts of justifications are being rolled out suggesting they haven't beaten a top team, playing bottom teams, etc.

Those are excuses.

One thing I see that turns my blood cold regarding any hope of a bright future... lining up with a 5 man forward line time after time. When you start defensive, you're not really interested in attacking, regardless of the talent available. It says you don't know how to win off the front foot.
