That’s because we don’t give a hoot about Brisbane and who they pick. Even if we did, outperforming Brisbane is setting a very low benchmark. I’d rather wecompated our efforts to Sydney or Hawthorn who seem to a have a conveyor belt for getting and developing talent.

Getting stuck into any of the young guys in this environment is misguided. If we had any depth some of them wouldn’t be getting a game yet.

Noddy, you misunderstand. I’m not getting stuck into younger players. I’m questioning our club’s decision making. You are however correct when you say that they wouldn’t get a game if we had depth- which can only happen if we select and develop the right players over a number of years i.e. my original point.

Agree Noddy on kick the first three and we'd have got some confidence and momentum. I am truly happy with what the young guys are showing. Swans had our hit and miss forward options well covered. Which is having several taller backline players who can out mark, out run and out play our forward options or should that be option.

Am I right in thinking that Des Headland was a number 2 or 1 pick by Brisbane in their heyday? Looked a million dollars over there, but devalued markedly on coming to Freo.
Playing out in reverse for Brayshaw ... at a club like the Hawks, Rich, or even Bombers, Blues, he’d probably make his mark. At least he has signed a contract extension with us. For a kid in his 9th game, I’ll give him more time before wanitng to cut him loose.
Our bigger problem is that Cerra might be thinking a bit that way already.

Obviously this is a contentious issue but I agree with WTB. Neither am I getting stuck into the kid, I just don't think he's not a number 2, second best in the country draft pick.

I've said a number of times that imo he is a solid, hard working footballer who seems like a nice young lad.

He does remind me of Neale, but if you think Lachie Neale is one of the best midfielders in the competition I don't agree with that either. The best midfielders are the ones that can really hurt you when they get the ball, that's why they are the ones who are always tagged. Neale racks up possessions but he's never tagged because he doesn't do the damage that a Fyfe, Martin, Dangerfield, Crouch, Kennedy, Mitchell, McCrae, Bontempelli, etc. do. A lot of these guys go forward and are just as valuable resting there and kicking goals which is another Neale doesn't or isn't expected to do.

Who should we have picked. Well it's easy to say now but the only player of this year's draft to have been nominated is Stepehnson. He looks all class. I have said previously that you draft for what you desperately need, and if we thought we needed a midfielder I would have been more than happy to see a ready to go right now midfielder like Kelly picked or a forward like Ryan, because this is another big weakness in our side. They obviously thought Matera would be better though.
I would also have been happy to have picked the best key position forward, another obvious weakness in our side, instead of two midfielders. That appears to be Brandner, who is being groomed as Kennedy's replacement and has already been offered a contract extension.

Summing up. Yes Brayshaw and Neale types are needed in sides but not at Number 2. But it's my opinion of course and one or two agree and a lot don't. And I'm definitely not talking about cutting him loose!

Agree that Cerra not signing is concerning, because I think he is the exciting, game braeking type player we need.

My reading of statements from club sources is that they recognise that there are a lot of processes that need to be improved and they are working on it. This is a project of building processes and culture that that will take years of blood sweat and tears. We aren't there yet. I recall Pav saying a while back something like, we aren't powerhouse club, we can be but it will take time and effort. Selecting players is a particularly tough gig, especially given the inherent randomness and time frame of years that it takes to see results.

What annoys me is the "supporters" who want to indulge in magical thinking instead of fronting up to the task, as per the current sack the coach and fix everything groupthink. And the constant bitching about everything the club does (and the players). Changing the coach every few years and relentlessly white-anting your club is a historically proven recipe for failure in the afl.

To be honest LDU and co aren’t doing much. Brayshaw is a star. Already he’s a tackling machine. I think I’d prefer him than Weller in a couple of years time. Like I said I’ve been tracking SPS, and I’ll say again, he’s not much hype. And that was when folks were salivating about him. I hope they continue to play all four of our debutants and give Giro a jumper this week. Play the kids, please .

I think Stephenson may have been a better acquisition for Freo. But wasn’t there some news that came out prior to the draft about concerns of a possible heart ailment he may have had . That bit of info may have spooked the club given the experience with Jayden Pitt.

Brayshaw is a star. That's ridiculous statement. A tackling machine does not make him a star and neither does comparing him to Weller. I don't think anyone would disagree that getting such a high pick for Weller was a big win. Nobody here was particularly concerned about him going.
You don't rate SPS but so far Brayshaw hasn't stood any more than him. Only difference is that one has played about 10 more games.
You're just doing that old talking it up to convince yourself and others after making over the top pre season claims that he would win the rising star award without even seeing him play an AFL game.

Give it a rest on Brayshaw. He’s already playing more than expected, building with each game and in a fairly rudderless boat with a style and system that discourages all natural talent and football flair.

How’s the number 1 draft pick travelling in comparison?

What is it these days with people expecting everything instantly?
Bradshaw was pretty good against the Saints who were more than likely closer to his skill level and then you throw him in against Sydney and start questioning his ability.
He’s bloody 18
