I am as out of ideas as the match committee clearly are. For what it’s worth I would play both Strnadica and Kersten this week and tell them never to leave the 50 arc. Not sure who backs up for Sandi. Probably Fyfe or Lachie Neale.

For gods sake Ross Lyon you are being paid alot of money. Try something bloody different. Anything. Just do something. Give the supporters something back. There has been a ton of lows over the years but I have never felt so bleak about where we are at. It’s supposed to be entertainment for crying out loud.

We are 14th best offence in the league, with to my eye (and the AFL player rankings) somewhere in the vicinity of the 16-17th most talented forward line. You can talk about tactics all you like, but relative to the rest of the competition we've got a bunch of spuds in the forward line, and last I looked players still score the goals.

The midfielders are responsible for better-than-expected scoring based on our forward talent. The worst you could say is that Lyon has not done more to help the midfield cover for our terrible forward line.

Dead set, have a look at the forward lines of the other clubs, and name me four clubs that have a worse forward line. I have maybe St Kilda, Footscray and Carlton as being equally as bad as our forwards, and that's about it.

I think that is part of it Morgan, no doubt. But then we can't really defend the list management from 2011 to 2015 can we?

Cause if you can successfully defend the list management case - really you're just saying we are crap and there is nothing we can do about it.

Getting back to the title of this thread.
Top eight? Highly unlikely. By the end of this week we should have a better idea of where we will sit come season end. The NM game looms as a line-in-the-sand game for us. Regardless of personnel the coaching staff need to instill some fire in the belly motivation to get the job done and leave no stone unturned to put a stop to the dispirited performances we’ve seen. It’s horrible to watch the boys run their guts out to get the ball to a losing contest up forward and to bust their guts again to defend the quick return. It can’t add to their confidence and by the time game’s over they are knackered with little to show for their effort.
Cmon RL the players effort is there give them a way to be rewarded for it.
NM is an interesting opposition most would not have rated them at the start of the season they now look finals bound. Is the Roos’ list that much better than ours?

The Roos haven’t got a better list but they are better coached.

The play with purpose and hardness, they play as a team. They have 2 competent tall forwards who can take a mark in Brown and Waite. A good ruckman in Goldstein hardworking hard tackling midfielders and a no name defence that does its job.

They win because they play for each other. I’m not seeing it with us, I haven’t seen it since August 2015.

I can’t see us beating them on current form with our current game plan and team culture.

You can say that the fault lies solely in the quality of the players in out forward line if you want, Morgan but to do that you have to ignore the quality of forward entries to those players. You also have to ignore the fact that our forwards are almost always outnumbered and surrounded by blokes who are taller.

When your forwards inside the attacking 50 are generally one player, usually Ballantyne and we insist on kicking the ball in high and slow and watching it get picked off by opposition defenders, thats hardly down to the forwards. Unless you count the mids making the forwards looks bad when you assess the quality of the forwards.

Providing we stop playing to the oppositions strengths, I think you'll find our forwards aren't actually as bad as some would make out.

It gets back to how many we have there, who they are and how we deliver the ball to them. Right now, they are too few, too short and lacking in confidence....and who could blame them.

Now that Lyon has finally said publicly that we bomb it in too much, maybe...finally...something will get done about that. I would be holding my breath though as just about everybody else worked out the problem years ago.

Getting back to your question Shane, why don't we spend 4 or 5 million $ to buy 2 key forwards? We could then teach them to sprint so they can get to the midfield before the umpy can bounce the ball. I'm sure Ballas or Matera can handle the inside 50's.

We could conceivably still make the 8. But that would be due to a very soft draw which sees us play crap teams at home, Carlton twice in the last 8 rounds, and threw us the GC game at home to boot.

It would flatter to deceive and we would be an embarrassment in the finals, playing the best teams away. It doesn't bear thinking about.

In or out of the 8 at the moment is not the measure of where we are at.

It's almost irrelevant whether we make the 8 or not, other than that. sadly, many, including the board, would undoubtedly take this a a measure of "success" and use it to justify maintaining the status quo.

It certainly looks like another year in the bottom 6 this year. Not sure making the 8 was ever possible without a bit of luck along the way. We did have 11 players under 50 games this week and half of those had less than 10 games.
We certainly played like half the team had no clue. The Slime had 5 under 50.
Keep playing the kids and let's get the pitchforks ready for next year.

This rebuild, restump, rewire or whatever its called this week supposedly started in 2015. This deep we should be expecting some sort of visible progress.

We are not seeing it on the field and we are not seeing in the results. We aren't even seeing where the development is happening and we aren't seeing any improvement in team cohesion.

Do we keep setting the bar so low and just keep waiting till next year? Next year never seems to arrive though does it.

For me, we should be seeing some improvement. The club should be conducting a critical review to evaluate our progress and if the targets for the rebuild aren't being met, I would expect some difficult questions be asked.

Personally, I'd start by asking what we planned to do about feeding the opposition in our forward 50. But thats just me.

Rebuilds are about offseasons. Ours started in 2016, meaning we’ve had two. We’ve done well in those offseasons, and won 4 then 8 games. We’ll probably get around 10 wins this year. I would have thought 10-12 wins would be about par this season.

Roly signed on to a 5 year extension using the words 'there is no excuse for me not to have led Freo to its first premiership by 2020'. His words not mine.

If we are to be in the running, we should be clearly in the running to play finals this year. The chances of that are remote at best. The chances of Roly leading to a flag by 2020 are even more remote, especially when he has not been able to identify (before last weekend at least) a major flaw in the way the team plays.

For all his denials, he still plays a 5 man forward line and last time I looked, you don't win many games by not scoring goals. How many quarters have we gone goalless this season. Too many for my liking.

Having flaws unaddressed week in week out leads to difficult questions being asked. That is not relentless negativity, that is the hard questions being asked. Something the club and its members should be doing when this deep in, there is no visible sign of improvement and no upward path.

If Roly doesn't have the answers, he shouldn't be there.
