TOPIC: B Hill

Do we need to tolerate the odd larrikin? I say yes, because, hey, life is boring if everyone just does what they are supposed to. Still I suppose the larrikin has to pay the price - but lets not make that price to high.

The price seems to be set by the "value to the club" not the degree of larrikinism. It would be good if Freo could set an example of equality in this. And a degree of realism, as you suggest RR. We have all witnessed the degree of enthusiasm that Perth bouncers bring to their workplace, and I take any incident involving them with a grain of salt.

Brad Hill has form with this sort of thing and has been done for assault and driving without a license. He not only breaks the teams drinking while injured and self reporting policies but jumps a barrier into a night club and then lies about his name to police after being caught. Somehow that's only penalised with a week's suspension (another week to get the body right after injury), a little cash and removal from one of the tonne of players in the leadership group?

Connor Blakely was feeling better after being given time off sick and went for a surf before getting lambasted and hung out to dry, being dropped from games. Luke Ryan and Brennan Cox had a drink after a game and copped the same. None of them had priors and were kids in their first/second season still learning the boundaries rather than a senior player turning 25 next month.

It feels weird to want a player punished but if you set the bar so high for a suspension due to such minor incidents like the above last year, you have to escalate it for something far more serious that involves the police like Brad Hill's incident. Even Bennell who had priors was punished repeatedly for having a couple of drinks a few times despite it not being against any rules at the time.

This seems weak, like a slap on the wrist when others have been lambs to the slaughter.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I have railed on the OOFTIT's for their continually weak responses to player issues, especially over their druggie years but then we go and effectively put Hill in the naughty corner for 5min before letting him rejoin the other kids.

He'll probably take his suspension at Peel so he is able to build run into his legs before returning to the side, half his fine is suspended for a year in case he re-offends and the club will probably come out with some redemption story next year when his peers vote him back in the leadership mob.

It's nothing, soft and not going to teach Hill anything other than he can get away with whatever he wants if he plays well. That's not a line I've enjoyed saying after taking the mickey out of every OOFTIT I can find since Cousins, Kerr and co.

Hill came to Freo with a history. The question is whether you start with a clean slate when you arrive? I think in most circumstances you do. If that's the case, then a one-game suspension seems about right, and is in line with previous suspensions like the one Blakely received.

What Brad did was really dumb, but I'm not sure it put anyone's safety at risk. There's no indication that when he was sprung he reacted violently.

It seems a lot of these instances happen when players aren't playing. If you are getting a game week-in-week-out there is so little time for you to muck up, that it seems that when they get a week to themselves they overcompensate. The same thing seems to happen during the bye and in the offseason.

It seems from the outside the work-life balance of AFL players is out of whack, but which coach is going to accept less time with their players?

Ross Lyon has been known to embrace it.

Give Lyon a few drinks, there's a chance he'll embrace anything that moves.

Harley, Blakely, Ryan and Cox didn't put anyone's safety in danger or react violently (well not till later in Harley's case) so I'm not sure that's the crux of the disciplinary reaction.

Blaming things on work/life balance is no excuse either, they have far more free time than the average employee, even when playing week to week and free time does not equal "I have nothing to do so let's go break some rules". If anything, he is supposed to be a senior player in a leadership position so should be more aware of the responsibilities on him to behave and do the right thing. As a result he is more culpable than any of those players who were punished for minor breaches of rubbish rules.

Hill actually broke the law and lied to the police while out drinking and breaking club policies. He should be sanctioned accordingly.
