TOPIC: Forward Line Structure

Except he hasn't played as a forward in recent weeks as we have decided to turn him into a backman at Peel.

To me, McCarthy is like a tall small forward. Sometimes running around like a headless chook.
He should have hand balled over into the square instead of trying to kick it.

I blame the forward coach for not having a proper structure. In a perfect world I'd have both Fyfe and Mundy in the fwd pockets and McCarthy at fullforward at the same time and only 1 ever going upground at a time.

The Cerra's and Tucker's should be closer to the flanks in the midfield.

We’re talking about young blokes who’s barely played 50 games collectively. Cox and Cammac are the future together with Darcy and Tabs. That Darling bloke down the road is finally becoming a KPP after 7 or 8 seasons having playing over 100 games. The reality is we’re building. Our backline is finally clicking, we’ve got a V8 engine room and our forward line is 1-2 players short of good. Look at Richmond, Riewoldt was their only and still is their KPP. But I don’t really think he’s anything special.

It seems to me that, generally, our forward line is 1-2 players short of a forward line.

Darling finally a KPP? Give me a break from your oddball rationalisations.

McCarthy has played nearly 50 games. None of them anything to write about.

I don't know why everyone's getting so worked up about McCarthy.

We saw the same thing last year when we weren't playing Tabs. McCarthy is not a big bodied marking forward. He's a lead up player, and that's probably the hardest role there is in a Fremantle side.

Physically he's not even as big as some of the midfielders going around. Kersten is along those lines also.

He needs the support of big marking forward so he doesn't take the number one defender. Not too sure that Cox is the answer to that though.

McCarthy's biggest problem is that he is a lead up forward playing as a "lead-back" forward. That has never been a recipe for success.

For what it's worth CA, I was howled down last year for suggesting we needed Tabs out there to let McCarthy play a more natural game, so start digging your slit trench now.

Drubbing, here’s my oddball rationale. Darling has played 153 games for an average of 1.8 goals a game. He’s playing second fiddle to JK. Cammac is our no. 1 forward. He’s kicked 50+ once in 8 seasons. But you’re the expert so I’ll leave it at that.

I also said we needed to play Tabener last year so do i still need to dig that trench?

Nah, use the one you dug last year, it should be deep enough.

Won't need room for all of D/L, CA I get the feeling the bullets will be coming from all directions.

For what its worth, I was one that agreed with leaving Tabs out last year at Peel. And I think we have a much better Tabs because we did that. Hungrier, better, and was really starting to find his place in the game - and the AFL - before injury struck.
Was starting to believe that he belonged, could compete, and importantly, 'could beat anyone that played on him.

Yes, It takes time, and it takes some hard decisions. And I think they played Tabs pretty much right last year. And hes all the better for it.!!

Think theyve be doing the same for Cox and Kerstan, and whilst not overly impressive , I thought Cox did some good things last night.

We need blokes down there that can take grabs, and he showed that a couple of times.

Still has a backmans kick however....

Not sure how to solve Cammac though. Think hes now had an extended run and needs to be showing a bit more than he is. But, he is a complete "confidence / show pony" type player, and sending him to Peel would probably have the opposite effect than one might intend.

I just wonder wether a few stints "on the ball" might get his confidence/ 'touch' up to a level where it needs to be??

Cletus, the only results from not playing Tabs last year was that he missed out on 12 or so games of experience, slowing his development down, and our dumb game plan was reinforced by not having a forward target when he was not there.

He had already shown he has what it takes and all he needed was game time. Lyon was prepared to give that game time to the likes of Sutcliffe and Sheridan, player types that we had a surplus of (many who were much better players) but not to Tabs, a player type who we had very few of, and none better than him. That decision also set back McCarthy for last year, and as we have seen this year.
