I can't believe these clowns are challenging the charge.
If he gets off then this is sending a huge precedent to all grades of footy.

A worrying development. Without arguing good or bad tackle, intent to hurt an unsuspecting opponent seems clear in the (endless) TV replays. Causing pain to another player is not illeagal, but what's happened to the head damage worries that saw Fyfe banned in 2014?
If this is overturned, it says that player safety and head/neck protection is far less important to the AwFuL than marketing hype.
As always, if you want to uncover the real story, follow the money. I've said this before: it's so hard not to be cynical.

I can and wish we would. Surely somebody that is considering handing out a penalty or ruling on something, has second thoughts if they think that decision is going to be publicly scrutinised. We never question anything that is ruled upon by AFL officials and therefore become a soft target.
I can understand early days why we adopted this policy in creating anywhere anytime culture. We are far from this atm and have plenty of reasons for our poor performances, very little chance that the players will use this as an excuse. In fact an us against the world mentality may be more useful.

What's the line on when West Coast will have sent out the smoke signals questioning the professionalism of the Port Adelaide medical staff? Lunchtime?

expat,

I can believe it. I predicted it yesterday and he'll likely get off because only one arm was pinned.

The fact that he rammed his opponents head into the ground will hardly get a mention.

NicNat is not really a very nice gentleman who will likely continue to injure opponents with the full blessing of the WA media

As Chief Naitanui sympathiser, I feel it's my duty to defend the big fella, or at least add some constructiveness and intelligence to the discussion.
He's a thug.

One arm not pinned. Still basically defenceless as head driven into turf.

Am I right in thinking that Amon had completed a legitimate mark before NicNat collected him? Using the Andrew Bradshaw tiggy-touch to Alex Rance as my baseline, wasn't a 50 metre penalty due?
Its a pity the MRO has chosen to ping him this week, given the highly comparable examples of previous weeks.

Well said Dockermus (above) - for introducing the term 'illeagle'. Yep, perfect descriptor.

It looks like a marginal case to me, as a lot of the slinging / dangerous tackles cases are. There are so many variables at play that discerning what is a ‘careless’ tackle warranting suspension from one that is merely overzealous or poorly executed is very difficult.

He’s got some recent form on this front so I’d suspend him, but I reckon the previous MRP regime with points is a better fit for this situation. It would allow the MRP to find him guilty, give him 90 points (just short of a suspension) knowing that if he does it again he’ll definitely get a week and maybe two.

As it is now it’s either a week or not, and after being bored into submission by lawyers and biomechanics experts, the Tribunal will likely let him off with nothing more than a stern word.

I’m not sure the legality or otherwise of the tackle is relevant. I am not 100% sure but I don’t think he was charged with an illegal tackle. He was charged (I think) with rough conduct. That can be a tackle, a bump, a trip or any number of other things. So even if the tackle was legal, it was deemed to be rough conduct i.e. likely to cause injury.

As such, the appeal should be thrown out.

Spot-on, DS: it's a rough conduct charge. I think West Coast know he is stuffed but don't want to publicly acknowledge what they are like.

It was a dangerous tackle that was graded as careless, medium impact and high contact (to the ground). Hearing the Match Review Person explain it, the careless component stemmed from NicNat not turning Amon in the tackle to prevent him from hitting his head on the ground.

I reckon NicNat was trying to be a tuff guy by putting a big hit on a small bloke. The AFL has gone down the path of players having a duty of care, which doesn't sit well with acts of false bravado like this. But it could very easily be spun as a merely poor technique after Amon turned a split second before NicNat launched into a tackle.

I reckon it's 9/10 of a suspension.

And 10/10 ill-eagle.
Nic-Nat has plenty of prior, he always 'shows his aggression' by attacking from the blind-side.
