Are we saying that the mob up the road are not hard and they are too soft? Because that would make sense. Otherwise you have lost me...and that aint hard.

I think it was the stadium managers who said it was on the softer side. Ian Collins said for years Docklands was fine despite all evidence to the contrary. Turned out they just didn't want to spend the money on light lamps to fix it.

Most others, like Lyon, have said "we know it’s at the upper end of the acceptable limit and it could be a little bit softer underfoot, but the AFL have ticked it off."

There is no bright line between safe and unsafe. All the clubs are saying is that it's probably closer to the line the AFL have drawn than they would like. Hopefully it's something that can be easily remedied (water, aerating, length) and not something structural.

Scientifically more people get killed from falling off ladders than taken by sharks off WA - still, it only takes a few tourists getting eaten to spark a drop in international tourists fronting up to prove the scientists are right.

When I watch a game of football it's way better with Buddy playing than not - way better.

"Over the past few years we've kept pretty quiet about the nature of player injuries"

Yes Polly , but over the past few years we've kept quite about everything....except a medal.

Chunks of grass were flying through the air as players ran down the wing at Etihad. They were re-laying one side of the ground every week. It wasn't a nuanced issue of the level of soil compaction.

There was always two issues at play at Docklands: one was how hard it was, and the other was that the grass didn't knit. The two in combination was terrible. The latter issue was solved by buying and running heat/light lamps over the surface. The former has never really been resolved, and as has been explained to me relates to the carpark under the stadium. I'm sure there is heaps of soil between the concrete slab of the carpark and the playing surface at Docklands, but it still seems be harder than most grounds. I have no idea if the carpark causes the issue or if it's merely a coincidence. But if it is harder and you play more than half your games there, it could be an issue over time.

Perth Stadium's grass looks ok, but the ground is still hard. All I know is that at least one tenderer was spooked by the playing surface issue, so I've always been curious as to how the builders and stadium managers resolved it. How do you keep the grass above an old tip stable where it isn't a structure connected to pylons drilled into the bedrock?

It might be a red herring, but in the thousands of articles about Perth Stadium I've never heard anyone explain it.

So it's the vibe of it that you don't like.

It's too early to say whether it's an issue or not, but if the ground is on the harder side and it's unable to be easily remedied, then over time it will have an effect on our injuries, recovery and selection. Given the tyranny of distance means we are already at a disadvantage for recovery time, a ground that puts us at a further disadvantage isn't ideal.

I must be missing something. Is this a man's game played by hardy stock of men (and women) or Princess and the pea fairyland elite athlete 'issues'.

Harden up.

Pearce broke his leg last year at Subi Oval and re-injured it training at Cockburn.

He did Shane, but now he'll have a weakness in that bone, as will Tabs in his foot etc. Having large humans running 10kms on hard surfaces with weakened bones isn't ideal. It's why Sandi plays in basketball boots. Having a harder stadium than most would be a disadvantage if it came to pass.

But it's very early days and perhaps it can be easily fixed. Most of the Eagles injuries were the type that could happen anywhere. The Buddy heel injury is the concerning one.

It will be hard to fix if it's not actually established that it's a harder surface.

I'm not a turf scientist but I assume that when they devise a measure for how hard a ground can be and a ground tests within the guidelines they established, then the ground isn't too hard.

As a non-turf scientist I'm happy to listen to reasons why the test might be wrong but I'm not going to listen to things like - my mate reckons it's too hard because it was built on an old tip site or; Gary Ablett did a hamstring so it's too hard.
