The CUB 'change in sponsorship' is the fact that Gage Roads now supply the grog at the footy. They just wouldn't let Carlton Draught continue to have their name plastered all over the Derby. It would be like getting Telstra to sponsor the Derby which is now played at Optus Stadium.

Yeah but you're easily confused, Jezza. It was Fremantle's decision not to hand out a medal. They're logic for making the decision is that it's not part of a sponsorship agreement but that's not preventing them from handing out a medal.

As Paul Hasleby said "The medal is owned by WA football. It’s owned by the fans". If they were going to scrap or change the award on principle, they should have started a debate about it over summer not just scrap it at the last minute because Fremantle couldn't get themselves organised in time.

This is hilarious. Congratulations to Steve Rosich and the Fremantle Dockers for figuring out how to abolish this ridiculous, contrived farce of an award. West Coast should indeed come up with their own award again; once again they can name it however they like, use their ex-players to determine who gets it, and keep it for themselves. Maybe they will even be able to again find an eastern states-based sponsor with terrible products to pay for it.

Seriously how hard can this be to sort out?
5 minutes with a metal detector and a shovel outside the stadium and I reckon you'd have a choice from about 30 old medals and other bits and pieces to choose from.

There'd be at least 5 of Brad Hardie's Brownlow Medals in there.

there have been stories around the place for years that the person the medal is named for has the final say on the recipient. Although it is voted on by a panel of journos (cough, cough), the story goes that Rosco can veto their votes and award to the player of his choice.

I don't know whether thats true but if so perhaps that could explain why the club wishes to part ways with the medal. Going back to the days of Josh Carr, when he had an epic day out against the slime and was (allegedly) the top vote for all the journos, Rossco apparently said no and awarded it to Chris Judd.

Either way its now going to go the best egurl on the ground decided by the coach so perhaps its just being a little more honest.

Personally its crap having a special medal for a H & A game anyway
Egurls Suck!

I find it hard to believe Rosich would make such a major change without consultation.

“The medal is owned by WA football. It’s owned by the fans.”?

What a load of BS. A glib statement that basically means nothing. The public don’t own it. We have absolutely no say in it. Ross Glendinning owns it, as he showed when he overrode the decision of the so-called expert panel.

It is a meaningless award that I won’t miss one bit.

The medal was born in a time when Wet Toast thought they ruled the world.
I'd be surprised if there were many or any professional clubs playing off annually for a medal named after one of their players.
Of course they want it sponsored, with that comes dosh which we havent got a lot, but the front runners are loaded with from the high membership numbers of their strange bunch.

Just beat them!

I can't believe the hoo-ha this has generated. If you think that the medal symbolises WA football, then think of who the medal is named after. RG was Chairman of Selectors for FFC for five minutes, but he was (a) inaugural captain of the Weagles, (b) known for his playing days at the Weagles. No disrespect for his past achievements in the VFL and in leading WA in State of Origin, but when it comes to the two clubs, really has nothing to do with FFC, but everything to do with the Weagles. It symbolises the days when the Weagles were The Only Football Team In Town and harkens to its glory days.

Get another medal, just don't name it after a WCE luminary. FFC took the opportunity - new stadium, new era - to divorce itself from the RG medal. Cold, callous, calculated. Why would they announce something like this over summer and allow for debate? Just so we can hear from disgruntled Weagles supporters all summer? Sort of like when someone breaks up with you and gives the lamest of reasons to 'save face' whereas the real reason is: I don't like you and don't want to be associated with you anymore.

None of that is reason why they're not having a medal. They're not having one because they couldn't get themselves organised in time.

Or they used the change in sponsorship arrangements to do something they have wanted to do for some time. Who knows?

Either way, good riddance.
