Thompson and Hardwick both acknowledged change was necessary.

I think that is the important thing to acknowledge here.

It gets me that some can't understand why the old game plan doesn't work and won't ever , its old hat .

Well, I didn’t want to get in to specifically talking about Lyon and game plans but ..... in the wins we have looked more attacking. No one who was there could argue that the Essendon game wasn’t damn exciting. And then I suspect that Lyon is playing more conservatively against the better teams, where we were expected to lose by most pundits and fans. So, on balance again.... I’m ok with it all. It ain’t perfect, but when it’s good, it’s bloody good.... and hopefully those attacking style games become more the norm ! Hang in there troops.

We need to have some players in the forward line who can take and hold a contested mark on a regular basis. Without that I don't see any game plan working. Specifically, which of the other 17 teams do we compare favourably to in this department?

Leading into spaces is obviously something we can improve but good teams are almost by definition good at closing spaces down. They're also good at guarding against break away attacks. In the end, you need more attacking options in your toolkit that are better than the oppositions defensive capabilities.

jimb2,

you can't guard every space in the forward line if (and this is a big if) you deliver the ball quickly and accurately. ie you can have players running into a space if the kick is accurate, low and direct. If you do high kicks, you just give the opposition time to close down the space and or the offered lead.

Its one of the reasons that I raise the issue of kicking skills because we don't do this as well as other teams. We have the players who are capable of it in HillS and Walters but frequently our entries are high and are therefore slower. Accurate kickers like HillS and Walters are not as common as I would like to see.

High kicks can be useful at times as you can get the ball to a player well forward of the defending pack if that player has been allowed to get free. Ballantyne has been especially good at doing just that.

You still need to mix it up though and not get too one dimensional because then you are easy to defend. Hawthorn are very good at doing both and their decision making ability here is where I want to see Freo get to.

Do we have any forwards that have the burst speed and timing to create separation on a lead? Maybe CamMac?

Ballas and Mayne used to do a decent job of leading up at the ball, but Ballas has lost a yard. Tabs can't create separation, and Mundy when he's down there is closed out pretty easily on a lead. Even Walters is more quick than fast.

It’s a sign of improvement in Tabs in that he’s now often got two players covering him, he needs to take a few of 211’s angry proton pills to get separation.

Any player can create enough separation if the kick coming in is low and accurate, including Tabs who I agree won't win too many races.

You only need a metre head start if the ball is delivered well enough. Its hard to defend against a chest mark if you are a metre behind the leading player.

Morgan, our problem starts because these players are NOT leading up at the ball, so will never "create separation".
Tabs has the reach and strength to mark the footy in a contest, if it is delivered to his advantage, he only needs a meter, as Yeti has said. The same goes for the rest of the team. Why has Mundy been able to lead into space so far this year. Because he has started his lead inside 30 meters from goal and led up the ground. He has probably also threatened a few teammates if they haven't left a hole for him to lead into. Not every kick that he has marked has been lace out-head high, but it has been in front of him and he has been able to lead his opponent to the ball, not be running back from defence and trying to read a kick coming over his left shoulder.

Get back to that basic of footy, and even some of our average kicks will look like Maurice Rioli.

I think it's time to crack out the old PAV files and see how the master did it.

Hey Expat, no need to look, it went like this:
Sandi tapped it down, McManus picked it up and kicked it into the space that he knew Pav would lead to, and Pav would mark it and kick the goal. So easy.

I think what this thread illustrates is there is a huge chasm to cross to become a proficient goal scoring team because even those that support our current methods and defend the skill level of the team have offered no justification as to why we should continue playing the same way. There are no examples of clubs that have won premierships playing the we are now.

There is no reason to accept that we should be a ‘work in progress’ until our best players retire or are past their peak in the next 1-3 years.

The time is now and it shouldn’t take as long as some people think to sort it out.
