Thank god they didn't kick straight otherwise it could have been another of those massacres we've become accustomed to.

I'm impressed by Cerra again today. We really need to sign him for another 2 years before Carrera Eyewear beat us to the punch.

I don't think it was a good effort. Couldn't take marks couldn't stick tackles and clearly looked disinterested at times. I know its a very big ground but its same for both sides. I see players running alongside the opposition instead of running towards them and ramping up the pressure. Even when tackling a player that was reaching down to the ground for the ball and having a massive advantage over him to make the tackle we still let them escape. It doesnt seem professional yet

Don't know but he was our leading goal kicker with two.

The reason why we run alongside the opposition rather than towards them is because we could end und up offside...

It strikes me that Matera’s not that good a pack mark - so you’d probably be best not kicking high ones in to him one on one, or two or three.

It also strikes me that he’s not really that good at crumbing.

And he’s not that good a kick.

And he’s not that clever at sledging.

So he’s the poor man’s Ballantyne with even less of a fit in a game plan that makes limited use of players’ best abilities..

He's the bloke who holds hist spot over a few years but eventually gets delisted so they can use pick 84 - deBoer, Mzungu, Clancey Pearce, Kepler Bradley...

De Boer! you've got to be impressed that we could delist him so we could get more games into the likes of Sheridan, Pearce and Sutcliffe.

Gets a regular game in a top side but not good enough for strugglers like us.

Game plan held up at times, in the end we had a chance in the 4th and ultimately the game plan is there to give the players a chance to win the game.
Some shocking disposal and inside 50 efforts contributed to the loss, but more importantly, where was the ferocity? GWS were off for long periods and we didn't make them pay.

Ross should swing the axe this week, I'd rather he send a message to the players that they need to lift, and he's prepared to bring in the seconds, even if it costs a game, as opposed to letting players keep their spot after repeated soft performances.

Every time Taberner goes near the ball he has 3 players on him because the opposition know he is our only forward. It should be the perfect foil for McCarthy but it isn’t working. I don’t know how long Freo can carry him. He just doesn’t get the footy enough.
Matera looks good. I think Ross should consider Banfield as the other pocket but it still leaves us short up forward.

Thank God for David Mundy and Hill off half back.

Some perspective please

We lost to a side packed with high draft picks, playing on their second ‘home’ ground (8 or 9 wins in a row for them there now), on a ground that most of our blokes have never played on - and in appalling conditions when you’re relying on accurate kicking as a core part of the game plan.

Turnovers killed us and some dodgy frees and non-decisions (how can Cameron get away with kicking on his left foot when his right foot is already across the boundary line?!) made the margin worse than it should’ve been.

Sure they missed some goals but many of those were snaps under pressure and we muffed several rolled gold opportunities too.

I find it tedious that the Lyon haters always blame him and the game plan when we lose but credit the players for playing with ‘freedom’ when we win.

The fact is we are a rebuilding team up against a Preliminary finalist from the last two seasons who have more high draft picks playing in their two’s than we have - full stop.

Plenty to like about the effort and willingness to centre the footy and push down the guts. A bit more composure going inside 50 wouldn’t have hurt but 5 goals is a good result. The 2016 premiers lost to them by more than 13 goals at the same ground a few weeks ago.

Careyg, we stuck our tackles, just didn't get the free kicks when the ball was dropped or thrown. Players kicking the ball from a meter outside the boundary doesn't help, marks not paid when they are clearly taken, 3 Freo players pinged for contact in a contest, Ryan gets a knee through his back from a player who had no intent for the footy, play on.

The free kick count in the last quarter by my count was 6 or 7 to none, no wonder Freo could not sustain their comeback. We also need desperately to play our key forward in the forward line. Ruckman are a dime a dozen, key forwards are gold, treat them as such. The times we looked good going forward our players were leading at the footy, not running away from the kicker. The same applied to GWS, they made sure they had forwards in place more often. Surely even blind freddy Ross can see this.
