Morgan.... I always like a lot of what you say, but I disagree with you that you can't see what's happening forward of the ball on TV. Maybe it's because I rarely get to live games and have no choice but to watch Ch Nic Nat.

If anything, I reckon our forward line deficiency ( i.e. The complete absence of one) is more identifiable via watching the TV games.

1) you notice our midfielders/back liners holding the ball up more, whilst they wait for a forward to get back to where they actually should be, (i.e. There can be absolutely no other explanation why the progress/ flow suddenly stops to the irate TV viewer.
and,
2) reguarly - and I mean several times a match for the last several years - any commentary team regularly comments on the blatantly obvious fact that there is simply no one in the Freo forward 50!! And on cue the director often cuts to a view that substantiates that fact.

If all you get to digest is TV footy - as I do - you get a fair idea where blokes are, and in our case, where blokes bloody well aren't!!!

And, well... I'm sorry...When I watch the other games of footy that Ch Nic Nat allow me to watch, I simply do not get the sense that vacant forward lines area common ploy throughout the competition...

It only happens in games that RoLy is involved with....

And you will probably counter with the fact that only live footy truly lets you see what goes on with structures / strategies and the like, but the couple of times a year I've got to a Freo match during the RoLy Reign, I've seen nothing that doesn't substantiate my TV derived view that RoLy's game plan is a joke, and he is unable - and most worryingly - unwilling to change.

His game plan works at home but not away?

Lets face it, it's very hard to win games away from home. Freo have 13 games at home this season. Win all these and one or two away and you make the 8.

Sydney are a top 4 side and crushed the Slime in R1. But they only just got over the line against WB (really the Dogs should have won that game, they're their own worst enemy).

But Sydney lost at home to Port (who have just gone down away to Essendon).

HGA is the same in most sports. That's why it is VITAL to beat WB and those flat track bullies in the next 2 weeks.

Agree with that except Sydney crushing the slime. They were in with a chance until the last 10 mins.

Lachie Weller, Darcy Tucker, Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra etc. All high draft picks and probably good footballers. But none of them are forwards. Going to draft after draft and ignoring the glaring deficiency in your list is a recipe for disaster and that is how it is has turned out.

The problem isn’t the players or Ross Lyon. They are being forced to do the best with what they have- which isn’t much. The responsibility lies with those in charge of the list.

Looking at what the Bombers did to Port, who were unbeaten, and whose forward line consists of Dixon, Gray, Wingard, Watts, Boak, please don’t labour on about game plans and forward lines. Winning away is extremely difficult, and while I thought we had a show, clearly we were up against it. We’ve lost to 2 gun sides, one of them got beaten by a team we outplayed at home. It’s a long season, win our next 2 games at home, suddenly people will start talking.

Cletus, watching the game yesterday several times the commentators pointed out that all 18 GWS players were in their defensive 50. And it worked for them, meaning that our many forward 50 entries resulted in few scoring shots.
And if you watch the mob up the road, you'll see that one of their strengths is the speed with which they come out of defence. Its a lot of them, because they too have no one camped in the forward line...

Who were the top pick standard forwards to be drafted in the last few years?

As opposed to the picks Freo took?

Smiley!

Don't, otherwise this thread will be in operation till we play GWS again in round 18.

nb Ben Brown and Mitch McGovern are two that spring to mind.

Watching the Dees and Hawks, lots of times there is no-one in the Hawks forward 50. Lots of balls bombed long into space and forwards have to run onto it.

Higgins was the obvious one in last years draft. He had a fantastic under age year. Stephenson was the other one we should have considered but were probably scared off over the heart thing. Those were my two picks and posted it in the lead up to draft day.
Logue was another high pick that has never played forward.

The reason our disposal efficiency was so good in the first quarter was because our mids/defenders had forwards to kick to when they got hold of the footy, so they were not under pressure when they kicked it. The reason why our disposal efficiency in the last quarter was so bad was because we had no-one for our mids/defenders to kick to so they had to eff around waiting for someone to get forward which put them under pressure, or kick it forward anyway to midget Shaw and the other bloke RoLy thought played well.

The reason why GWS got 18 players into our defence every time we got the ball, in the second half, was because they were running in with our forwards. Even Glen Jackovich could identify that as a problem, so it is not brain surgery to fix. So it is a coaching problem. Change the game plan or change the coach. Either, or, but do one of them for chrissakes.

The only key forward we've drafted, before Dixon this year, in the last few years is Apeness and perhaps Cox. Although he was an AA backman that we're trying to change into a forward.

Fremantle have needed to draft forwards for years. Big or small. Yet we continually draft anything but and expect goals to magically fall from the sky. It’s why we have this tiresome move Fyfe forward conversation every off season. Then we expect a rookie list Taberner to carry us.
It is a lack of foresight and planning by list management that has us where we are.

Now there’s a thought ....the rocket surgeon as coach.......aaaaaaarrrrggghhhh.

Just maybe we realised we had to have plenty down back to have a chance and not having two elite runners in langdon and hill affected our run into the forward line.

The coach game presser is worth a listen.
