I’ve been saying for a long time that players will play a huge part in a coach’s success. If the players think that they’ve got a dud coach, he’ll be send packing. Whether you like it or not, the players under Roly’s watch have played beyond their capabilities. One in particular has won a Brownlow medal. Perhaps players like Sonny would’ve been another statistic if the coach didn’t see potential. Roly has stuck by players and cutting ties with Mayne, Gu, De Boer, Silvagni was from sources a difficult time for Roly. Say what you like, I’m putting my money on Fyfe and Co to make Roly the best coach in Freo’s history. And Roly to turn HB into a superstar in 2018.

I think what happens at clubs is you get board members who disagree with the continuance of a coach. That's how the process gets started if clubs want change. What would initiate that is either continuing poor results or a disengaged/unhappy player group.

Steves aren't on the board any more - no one in operations who hired Lyon is. The board clearly see no need to question Lyon's tenure.

Wouldn't the board take advice from upper management? They should also be open to player discussion for a broader view. But...again, we don't really know. But discussion with all personnel would be best in my view.

Well theres nothing like talking a coach up by making statements that have zero basis in reality.

The players under Roly's watch have played beyond their capabilities? Really?

A couple of observations, if it was beyond their capabilities then they wouldn't have been able to achieve what they did. To suggest otherwise is an exercise in nonsense.

The second observation on that statement is that there is no evidence either way to say they could have done better under another coach or performed worse. No evidence whatsoever.

There is evidence that mistakes are being made and repeated each year by selecting players that have not made the grade and are not going to suddenly make the grade this deep into their careers. Its funny how the team performance improves when certain players are not selected. Its happened in previous years and its happened again this year.

If failure is feedback then somebody just refuses to listen.

We could also raise the issues that have been raised on here for years about having a forward line. Its amazing how much better we play when we actually have a forward line.

Its not as amazing as some of bizarre statements trying to canonise a bloke that keeps making the same mistakes each year.

As for the board being in a better position than people outside the club to make judgements, thats another silly statement. Apart from a couple of former players, who probably have more insight, the board is comprised of business people not footy experts. They are headed by a bloke who builds houses and I'm not sure what magical footy insights building houses will give you but they are not there to make expert footy judgements but to run a business. They are probably equally as capable of making footy judgements as many on Dockerland.

A decent business person would likely start with KPIs to judge the operations of the coaches and Looking at how we've performed for a while, I doubt that too many KPIs have been exceeded....unless they were set incredibly low.

Jezza don't you think congratulating RoLy for excommunicating Mikey is a bit rich? I do - it's like throwing your dog out the ute window and then asking for plaundits when he fronts up at your house again. Stop that baloney, Michael did it all by himself.

A few have been told to go away and sort themselves out. Mikey is the only one the Lyonites are claiming , however.

Yep, continually picking players who do not deserve selection is not good for morale. One player selection may affect attitude/confidence of some. It probably shouldn't but footy clubs are open to grumbling from within...and this can affect performance.

Happy to be proven wrong Polly, but it’s a case of having good mentors that’ll help an individual back on the rail tracks. Sure the responsibility lies on the individual and Mikey to his credit did what was required. And just maybe Roly had little input but without those people like his coaches around him, it would have been a battle. Clearly they didn’t give up on him and like HB, Roly ain’t throwing the towel in just yet. I can’t recall to many coaches that have stuck by a player like HB than Roly. And that is a godsend. Because there’s no denying when HB is on the park Freo is a better team. Sometimes the most important thing about coaching or people in management is the relationship one has with their subordinates. Lose the trust and faith and no game plan will succeed. That’s probably why we’re gettng players wanting to come to Freo and not WC.

That's my point, Yeti. It's easy to claim the success, but not many Lyonites want to associate RoLy with the failures, and I'm sure there are a few others that haven't come to mind yet.

Walters, like Bennell was excommunicated from the club - no access to facilities or coaching staff. They did diddly and it's absolute baloney for any of them to take any credit whatsoever. Which is one of my main beefs with RoLy - he can't develop talent, maybe he doesn't know what it is, maybe he does but his ego gets in the way. He can provide unwavering support to big tall idiot defenders that can't play football no matter what the cost - team or otherwise.

Ross also singled out Clancee's fat 'arris on a few occasions...

I can't remember exactly, but I'm sure he was banished/sent to the naughty corner for a bit. Then came back. Then got delisted.

Not sure what this is bringing to the argument, but you don't get the chance to mention Clancee and his sturdy gluteal profile much these days...

He was delisted but invited to keep training with the club, then taken late in the rookie draft. They spun it into a Ross Lyon thing.
