You make a point Jezza. I guess what I was trying to do was explain why some truly don't like Lyon. Me (and most certainly you) are not qualified to make a truly informed decision on Lyon's ability to coach an AFL team.

But for him to sit there and continuously pi** down our backs and tell us it's raining - I think we are allowed to call that out.

People who invest time and money into the club have a right to a little transparency and sincerity. To push this rebuild journey garbage and then open the season with same old is just plain contempt.

For The Clarkson admirers, he began he’s coaching tenure about 2005, with the help of a coupl of high picks namely in Franklin and Roughhead, not to mention Hodge, Lewis and Mitchell down the order, helped him win a premiership in 2008. Many thought it was premature. 5 years later was lauded for a 3 peat and hailed as one of the best coaches in modern history. Between 2008 and 13, he was under the pump from the board to deliver. Fans were up in arms. Here we are, a bloke in his 7th year, without winning one, played in 4 consecutive finals and now having the cattle at his disposal, are getting bagged from a minority who thinks he’s absolutely garbage. I don’t profess to be an expert not by any stretch of the imagination but I will give people an opportunity to prove me wrong. Just my nature.

You've just tried to reduce a bloke, who has coached 4 premiership teams, to a lucky and overrated battler.

To claim they were lucky with who they recruited is a joke. Isn't that part of the game, recruiting well? So because they did it a lot better than others was just a fluke?

Your claim of how they fell away after their so called premature GF win in 2008 is also equally ridiculous. They made the finals every year between then and their next premiership run. They never bottomed out like we did, even last year after a big player turnover they were still far more competitive than we were.

You're claiming that we will be that good with our great recruits. Boom or bust, etc, etc so no more excuses.

Your a good coach if you can get a team into GFs, winning them can sometimes be in the lap of the gods.
RoLy comes across as being somewhat dismissive of the media..,I can understand why but as a member I don’t take personal offence at that.

Fair enough Noddy. But at the end of the day who is he being dismissive of?

Everyone but himself is the short answer.

RoLy's direction of Freo was worked out by almost everybody towards the end of 2015, when we ended up at the top of the ladder and were bundled out unceremoniously in the playoffs. The next season we dropped further down the ladder quicker than any other team in the history of the game. He stuck with it, we win a couple of more games the following year but get trounced more often than not and lose all credibility. Despite our list, despite our drafting there is a tendency to play stupid football and point at the far horizon. Some think we're heading towards it, others think we're treading water - either way, other cars are passing us as we fiddle about.

That's it - stick with the P76 or hop into one of those Kias that kicks 200hp out of a 4cyl? It's a fair question, everyone should be asking it.

Well, the P76 will let you hang the tail right out on a slippery surface because it's rear wheel drive and that lovely little alloy 4L V8 will actually wind up quite nicely if it's allowed to breathe...
or you could drive a Kia.

it's a bit like being proud of getting to a Grand Final while casually ignoring not winning it.

I've thought about a better analogy - RoLy (for me) is the Richard Tambling of the AwFL coaches, he promises to deliver because you've invested so much into him, but in the end you've got to cut your losses and trade him to Adelaide. Skillful and adept, uses the ball effectively, well thought of by everyone but in the end the game ran past him up the middle.

I think he’s one of those guys that if he had a choice he wouldn’t do media, unlike say Sheedy whomseemed to love it.

We’ve got a coach who has, considered by some a fair (I consider expansive) knowledge on how to coach. He doesn’t suffer media types Basel, and any other twit etc that wants to goad him easily. What I gather is that he’s one of those people that demands and gives loyalty to his players, sometimes to his detriment but he’s now changed his tack to understand he must let that loyalty go to play the best he’s got.

I reckon he’s one that doesn’t give friendship easily but once you’ve got it, unless you cross a line, it’s friends for life.

After the event, even if you lose, surely there should be some pride in getting into one, if you actually understand how difficult it is to get there?

Before Roly, Freo’s so called success was laughable. Yet people think that Roly’s tenure thus far is anything but successful. It’s been said, getting to a GF is tough, winning one is even tougher. So kudos to Clarko especially and to Hardwick and Bevo. The latter currently is clueless as to how his team has plummeted since 2016. Looking at the current coaching landscape, there isn’t much quality who would be able to bring Freo instant success. If using automobiles as an example of moving forward, then I’d suggest Leon Cameron hand in his keys to his Ferrari. The bottom line is, and you’re right CA, there’s no more excuses. Given our performance last weekend, I thought it showed improvement. So we’re 1 from 2 in 2018, having played 2 finals contenders. The next 4 weeks we play another 3 finalists from 2017. After 6 weeks, we’re predicted to win 2 games. How about keeping our powder dry until then. Though I think it’ll be difficult for some.

It's interesting the whole talk about coaches and I must profess I have a somewhat ambivalent attitude towards Lyon. When you listen to the radio and the TV and the so-called experts dissect a game afterwards they almost always will point to the reason why team X won was because they got greater numbers round the ball, supported their teammates, greater spread etc. That is, most of the expert view on why a team won almost always comes back to effort. You hardly ever hear the 'experts' talk about a particular strategic move made by a coach. So, I'm certainly not saying that strategy doesn't play a role, of course it does, but it means bugger all without effort and commitment. (and, by the way, loved that side of it last week).
