I used to think that Polly, but almost every coach in every sport says that in-game tactical changes are wildly overvalued by fans and the media, and probably account for only a very small part of a coach's job.

That is correct, Morgan, the coach is busy with whiteboards, witches hats, which players to throw under the bus this week and counting their moolah, so in successful teams, the in-game tactical stuff is left up to the leadership group on the ground.

Which is why most coaches say it is overrated.

Sure, we can see it and it does matter. Look at what Clarkson did in the 4th to counteract what Scott did. He never moved players around - like Scott did - he altered the WeePoos structural positioning to win the game. It was replicating an NFL defensive set - ie linebackers, secondary and free safety. I recognised it (and laughed at the time) - it was unusual to say the least.

That's what you pay a coach to come up with - it actually shows up in a spectator sport. People watch it - they stop thinking and just groan when you cop successive 10 goal + thumpings. Sooner or later they just can't watch it anymore, you sack the coach and try something different.

I really enjoyed listening to Clarkson talking after Monday's game; a competent man speaking in a plain and sincere manner about football. No cliches, no weasel words or phrases designed to muddy the waters. Just a bloke treating people with respect.

Lyon doesn't respect the fans, don't care how good a coach he is I'd trade him for a handful of fava beans.

If and when Freo replaces Lyon I hope that we’ve won a premiership or three. And I also hope that the coach is someone who respects all in sundry because that’s what makes a good coach, apparently. Oh and in breaking news, he’ll have a game plan that’ll be so player friendly that will turn the competition upside down overnight. I’m sure there’s a coach out there that’ll meet those essential criteria.
