Looking forward to your reviews of the East Perth establishments Morgan..

From The Royal to Optus is only about 15 minutes over the Windan Bridge.

Another small bar called Five 6 Eight has opened next to the East Perth Lake

Are you checking out The Royal and Campfield at some stage?

Hi Sox. I'll most definitely head to those places before the season ends. I've been to the Camfield after the game (spoiler: I wasn't a huge fan), but it will definitely need a pre-game test. Did you call it the Campfield because you literally have to camp out the night before to get a table before the game?

I quite like the Royal on non-game days, but I'm keen to see how they cope with the extra people.

Last I heard the Matagarup Bridge was on track to finish in late May, so that will open up a few new places.

Five6Eight in East Perth (near Claisebrook)

There has been a lot of important issues to discuss in the last fortnight, like whether our coach is a creeper or just a bad coach (or perhaps neither) and whether ABBA is a disco group or just write terrible songs. If you ask me these issues are taking precious airtime away from the most important issue: where is the best place to get a beer before a game at the Craypot.

As an aside, did Craypot ever take off as a name? I don’t read the newspaper anymore or listen to talkback radio, so I don’t know what idiots have been calling it.

Anyway, without further adieu, my review of Five6Eight in East Perth. Five6Eight is a new small bar just down the way from the Royal, the other side of Plain Street from Claisebrook Cove (next to Blackbird for those who know it). I’m generally against places that substitute numbers for a proper name, but this place is named after the number of millilitres in a pint – and doesn’t sell schooners - so it was already off to a good start.

Walking time to stadium: 25 minutes now, about 15 minutes after the Matagarup Bridge is finished - 15/20
I’m not sure you are going to get too many places closer than this once the footbridge is finished. As it was, it’s quite a pleasant walk along the Claisebrook foreshore and Windan Bridge.

Ease to get there: 8/10
There’s parking around venue if you get there early enough (we got there 3.30 for a 6.10 start), and those who came on public transport had no trouble getting there as it’s on a Yellow Cat stop and a 5 min walk from Claisebrook station.

Availability of seating: 9/10
We booked a table, but would have had no trouble getting a seat yesterday. The venue opens out to some nice seats outside where you can get some dappled light through the trees on a nice day. The venue is pretty small – I reckon the capacity couldn’t be much more than 100 – so perhaps it will fill up once the footbridge is built and people know it’s there.

Beer selection: 8/10
They had a small but good selection of about half a dozen beers on tap (including Guinness Blue1Red1). My pick was the Brewdog Punk IPA. They also had plenty of different bottled beers.

Beer price: 7/10
A pint of the Brewdog was $11.50, which is not too bad for a good beer.

Quality / value of food: 7/10
The menu seems to be skewed towards Scottish/Irish fare – including things like Haggis, neeps and black pudding - so if that’s your go you’ll like it. I lived in Edinburgh for a few years and never really warmed to the local dishes, so I went a steak sandwich coming in at $24. The steak was great but it came in Wheaten bread which wouldn’t have been my choice. A few friends chose the Parmi which I think was $25 and hit the spot pretty well.

Wait time for beer and food: 9/10
There were enough staff on so there was no wait to order a beer, and the kitchen seemed to turn things around in reasonable time (about 20 mins from ordering).

Good for kids: 7/10
There’s nothing specifically here for the kids, but there’s a bit open space with the man-made lake for them to run around if they are at that age.

General Vibe: 8/10
The music was good and not too loud. The place is comfy without being fancy. The outside bit is lovely on a nice day, and the staff were friendly enough. There’s a couple of TVs but no Foxtel, so if you were hoping to catch the end of another game you might have to choose another venue – a few of my mates were watching the end of the Showdown on their phones, which isn’t the most social thing in the world.

Overall: 78/100
Our crew was pretty happy with this place as a pre-game venue and I’m sure we’ll be back. We used to frequent the Brown Fox in West Perth before games at Subi, and although the furniture and space isn’t quite as refined here, it has a similar vibe in that it’s not too busy, you get some nice light outside and it’s still pretty close to the stadium.

you can get some dappled light through the trees on a nice day.-Aahh, the serenity!

And a lake for the kids to play around while their parents are on the booze. Interesting.

Thanks for another comprehensive review Morgan.

After the game I grabbed a 661 got off on the terrace near Sherwood st and headed to Petition. Sat in the wine bar had a couple of nice reds and a bowl of pasta. Then a visit to the beer corner for an IPA.

No worries Quasimodo.

Petition is a good bet. If you liked the wine bar section, I suggest you also check out the Lalla Rookh Wine Store (entrance off Sherwood crt). It’s a tiny enoteca-style hidden gem - a perfect dark, cosy place for some pasta and a red wine on a rainy winter’s night.

Love your work Morgan.
The spelling error is because I was posting on my behalf of my dear old Mum - I’ve been living in Victoria for the last ten years nowbut all of my family is still over in WA and still looking for a regular pre-game hook-up.

The Camfield

The threat of rain, and a heavily pregnant friend, dictated that we find a place closer to the stadium this week; so on the expectation of a smallish crowd, we bit the bullet and gave the Camfield a burl.

Full disclosure: I have a strong prejudice against anything that self-describes as a Super Pub, so that might have swayed my scores a little. I also have some pre-existing biases against venues owned by this particular group (like The Reveley and The Stables), so perhaps just assume you’ll like the Camfield more than I do.

Walking time to stadium: 90 seconds - 18/20
So, it’s obviously the closest you can get to the stadium - Paul Hasleby could probably jog it. I’ve taken a token couple of points off because if Hasleby could jog it it’s probably too close, and so you wouldn’t get as much time for that slightly boozy walk with the stadium emerging in front of you. It’s a good looking stadium, especially at night, so I think you miss out a bit. But it’s certainly convenient. For the record, I think somewhere between a 5-10 minute walk to the ground is ideal.

Ease to get there: 8/10
It’s right outside the stadium, so it could easily get a 10/10. I’m giving it an 8 though, because my wife and toddler – who don’t come to the game – often come for lunch beforehand to catch up with friends; and this venue doesn’t work for that because you can’t park anywhere near it. Some would call this a win, but I quite like my family, and even if I didn’t I know enough not to put this in writing. But if that’s not an issue for you then this should be a 10.

Availability of seating: 6/10
There are literally thousands of seats, but even more thousands of punters, so this one is hard to assess. If you get there three hours before the game you could have the run of the place, but from about 2 hours before a game this Super Pub (urgh), gets Super Busy. There have been lines for every game this year, which means if one of your less reliable mates is running late, they’ll be stuck in the line. In other words, I wouldn’t recommend this place if you are friends with Brad Hill. There’s also no option to book. All that said, if you have reliable friends and nothing but time, you can choose lots of different places to sit, which is cool.

Beer selection: 6/10
There are about 10 or so beers on tap, but no clear winners for mine. The Prize Ale was ok, but I ended up defaulting to the James Squire 150 Lashes, which is the beer you pick when there aren’t really any other better beers. It’s the T-Bone Sheridan of beers.

Beer price: 6/10
A pint of the T-Bone was $12. I’d pay $12 for a Cowboy Neale, but it seems a bit rich for a T-Bone.

Quality / value of food: 7/10
I’ll be honest, I was too excited about the $2 pies to waste too much space filling up on slightly overpriced pub fare. We got a bit of a selection from the sharing plates menu: sliders, chips and arancini. All were fine.

Wait time for beer and food: 8/10
The wait time for beers and food was much better than I expected, so they’ve clearly set things up pretty well. Food took about 20 mins and less than a 5 minute wait for beers.

Good for kids: 6/10
There’s nothing specifically here for the kids, and you could easily temporarily lose one in a place this size if you weren’t paying attention.

General Vibe: 5/10
We got there 2 hours before the game, so all the best spots were taken, and we therefore sat in the back room which very much resembles a cafeteria. It’s fine, but you probably wouldn’t go there by choice. If you had a nice day some of the outside areas are pretty cool (and look out to the stadium). The place has Foxtel and some good screens, so it’s an option if you are wanted to catch some of an earlier game. In this instance the Eagles were winning, and there were actual Eagles fans watching the game, so I could have easily scored the vibe -90 out of 10, but that might be a smidge too churlish.

Overall: 70/100
I think this is a place you need to try for yourself, and given its location most people will at some point. I think they’ve done a good job of building a Super Pub, and against all odds they seem to be doing a great job of running a venue that large; but, it’s just not for me. Although it’s very convenient in some ways, it won’t be a regular for us for reasons that are particular to our crew – like people coming who aren’t going to the game, and a few young kids. Also, my mates are too flakey (re hungover) to be able to turn up early enough to get a good spot.

I can accept the digs at a super pub and Hase but I can't tolerate equating lashes to Tommy Sheridan. You've gone too far.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Pretty good assessment. Squire make a couple of decent ones (Hop Thief and Pils, if you can find that one anymore...), but 150 Lashes is an average toiler being touted as craft quality.

Craft 'quality' has generally gone down with the proliferation of micro's smelling a fad and a quid. The good uns are harder to dig out than a Sherrin from under 211.

Pretty much. But I'm unconvinced Paul Haselby could break into a jog anywhere.
