Daniel Pearce couldn't get a game last year yet he suddenly becomes a must pick in round one? It's a really confusing selection. Even to a casual observer.

Hamling will have learnt his lesson. He won’t go to his Dad’s wedding again.

Larkin, read all my post. The coach is a dud.

As a comparison, lets compare Roly's recent record since the AFL changed the rules and Damien Drum, who was sacked because he was a dud.

Drum

1999 played 22 for 5 wins 17 losses
2000 played 22 for 8 wins 14 losses
2001 coached 13 for 0 wins 13 losses

Lyon

2016 played 22 for 4 wins 18 losses
2017 played 22 for 8 wins 14 losses
2018 coached 1 for 1 loss

So far over a similar period he's 1 win behind Drum but has until mid year to catch up.

He has shown he cannot adapt to the new rules. Hiding behind a rebuild, restump, rewire that seems to start every year just isn't going to work when you can see that we are not changing, not improving and posters on footy forums can tell before the game where its going to go wrong, even if they do get accused of just being negative. Negative and correct it would seem

I think not playing Hamling was a mistake, but the rest of the named team looked good to me. I agree we probably couldn't have picked any more first-year players for this game, and we already had a bunch of more experienced debutants (Wilson, Matera, and for all intents and purposes A Pearce) so if you were going to replace D Pearce it would have been for another experienced player who had played with the group. Otherwise about a third of your team would be unfamiliar with each other.

I don't know too much about guys like Duman or Nyhuis, but they would have to be pretty amazing if a straight swap for D Pearce to make much of a difference. Our defence did an admirable job given the entries, so I'm not sure Hamling would have made too much difference. I thought Johnno was ok, even if I did wince every time he fell over.

So, if you say we got two selections wrong, we still got 20 right (91%) right.

We lost because our best players didn't get enough of the ball in the right spots, or use it well enough. They'll be better next week. The biggest issue to me was the kicking into the forward line. If we ever get S Hill and Bennell back, they instantly are our best two guys to do that. It might not happen, but if it does that will make a world of different, and infinitely more difference than Fringe Player X instead of D Pearce.

Yeti, you’ve had it in for Roly since he came to the club. At the minute, giving us stats to back up your argument especially comparing him to Drum is bordering on stupidity. Drum was no coach. The selection of Pearce and Sutcliffe was Roly’s call, and yes it imploded. Fyfe had a day to forget, Mundy too could have played better. But when you don’t make tackles stick, that’s not the coaches fault. Lets put on the stats that matter, then your view can be debated. Stop blading the coach.

We got more than 2 selections wrong, Morgan.

PearceD, Sutcliffe are currently not AFL standard. We left out Hamling and made up for that mistake by playing Tabs behind the ball all day and eventually at full back. We also placed Kersten in defence for the second half. A better mix would be including Hamling and Darcy. Yesterday I would have left out Johnson as well as he wasn't suited for yesterday's team. Darcy could have been the backup ruck, leaving Tabs to actually play forward where he played in the JLT.

Its also not that simple. We lack AFL skills level. That should have been addressed years ago but still hasn't. Doesn't matter who you pick and what your gameplan is, if you can't reliably kick and handball, you'll lose more than you win.

Jezza, play the ball and not the man.

Comparing records is accurate and puts his performance into perspective.

His failures are easy to point to. He doesn't deal with skills. He doesn't select on merit and he doesn't learn from repeated mistakes.

I could retaliate and point out out that you blindly support anything that Roly says without thought and I could point put how excited you were for the game when the 'negative' people were saying he was making the same mistakes as last year....and how did that work out.

Maybe critically evaluate rather than just take his pressers on trust.

Jezza I get a bit tired of the coach bashing and have regularly defended him and his retention, I watched the pre season derby and thought he might have flicked the switch only for yesterday’s result to unfold. Ultimately he has responsibility to present a team that will contest. What is being presented is a disorganised rabble unable to achieve any fluency or impact when we have the ascendency.
I disagree with people stating we gave effort, I saw 15 min of required effort and refusal to be denied yesterday, this is non negotiable in the AFL. He needs to instill this in every player because without this no amount of process or system will achieve anything. Amazingly when I see teams play with this desire and focus execution seems to follow.
Just watching Western Bulldogs and they are suffering a similar result. They have similar playing group that won a premiership two years ago and seem to be unable to recapture that desire. The Tigers got sick of tolerating it last year and won a premiership.
This begins with our senior players and yesterday they were ordinary, Fyfe, Walters, Mundy, Johnson, Hill and Sandilands (improved but Ryder left the field and was injured). Lyon needs to generate this firstly within this group and then the entire squad.
I can live with this weeks result and still support Lyon, but unless I see consistent improvement that is readily identifiable by mid season I will be joining the chorus for change. I refuse to tolerate repeated panic skill errors and generally incompetent football.

I find it extraordinary that some on here want to compare Drum to Lyon. How many finals did we play in, let alone win under Drum?? Drum was unproven elsewhere, was shown to be a complete dud and set the Docker’s back 5 years IMHO.

Yes, the AFL decided the high-pressure, defensive-based style of play we dominated at was not the ‘look’ they were after and effectively killed it off over a season or two with reduced rotations, allowing ‘flicks’ (read throws) out of congestion to move play along and not rewarding good tackles through ignoring incorrect disposal (unless it’s a purple jumper not disposing of it correctly, as I saw yesterday). The Bulldogs won a flag due to this.

However, RL did not have the luxury or ability to turnover a list full of ‘blue-collar’ types who could run all day, but not very quickly, or who could hit a target in congestion but not over a distance - in the same time frame as the AFL changed the rules.

The recruiting over the past few years has been the best in our history, IMHO - but I assume the RL haters want to give Lloyd or even Bondy credit for that over the coach?? You can’t have it both ways. If the buck stops with the coach (as I believe it should) when things go wrong then he must get the credit for when they get things right.

My understanding of recruiting is the coach tells the recruiting staff what types of players he wants and it’s up to the recruiters to get those types through the door. Hence we’ve seen a focus on pace and quality ball-users through the past 2 ‘rebuilding’ drafts.

I’d make the point of who else the RL haters would instal as coach but that seems to be less of a priority to just showing RL the door.

DBTS, you pointed out that our senior players bar Sandi and Neale, had a rubbish day. I accept that Roly needs to instil hardness into the group and that was not on show. I agree with Yeti that some positional changes should have been made but you go in thinking that they’ve had a good preseason and you reward that. We move on to Essendon now. No doubt another shocker and it’ll be on.

Whoa there Jason. I don't think anyone here would give Bond too much credit for anything. In fact there would be plenty of celebrating if he left, i reckon.

Don't know whether it was more Roly bs or not but he actually said in the draft before last he wasn't involved and didn't know who they were targeting.

Haha comparing Roly to Drum. Fact is Roly has been the best coach we've had by a country mile.
We only ever used to dream of making a GF with a chance to win a flag, Roly made that happen.
The board has backed him until 2020, if he doesn't deliver a flag in that time he will walk himself.
Are those against him saying the board have no clue ?
