I think not playing Hamling was a mistake, but the rest of the named team looked good to me. I agree we probably couldn't have picked any more first-year players for this game, and we already had a bunch of more experienced debutants (Wilson, Matera, and for all intents and purposes A Pearce) so if you were going to replace D Pearce it would have been for another experienced player who had played with the group. Otherwise about a third of your team would be unfamiliar with each other.
I don't know too much about guys like Duman or Nyhuis, but they would have to be pretty amazing if a straight swap for D Pearce to make much of a difference. Our defence did an admirable job given the entries, so I'm not sure Hamling would have made too much difference. I thought Johnno was ok, even if I did wince every time he fell over.
So, if you say we got two selections wrong, we still got 20 right (91%) right.
We lost because our best players didn't get enough of the ball in the right spots, or use it well enough. They'll be better next week. The biggest issue to me was the kicking into the forward line. If we ever get S Hill and Bennell back, they instantly are our best two guys to do that. It might not happen, but if it does that will make a world of different, and infinitely more difference than Fringe Player X instead of D Pearce.
