"Taberner is not a power forward but he is a good contested mark". You don't even know what you are saying anymore. When you are 200cm and weigh 100 kilo you can't go to ground like he does. It's pathetic.

Every one knows he is capable but there are things he does on a football field that are not acceptable.

Yeti seems to think he sees things others don't- he doesn't. It's what he doesn't see that puts him at odds with others.

At least I can see the bleeding obvious, Hypen.

He's not a power forward like Buddy or JK. He simply isn't. He IS a good contested mark and the stats over a number of years show that. For a bloke with such wonderful vision, you seemed to missed his marking stats.

As for falling over, thats a new one. Have the old complaints run out? What does that have to do with his marking ability. Based on his record, exactly none I would say.

He may not use his body size as well as others and thats undeniable but there are worse players for that who are getting more games. Try that criticism on Ballantyne occasionally and you can see real grounds for complaint

I think Tabs is our least bad option as a tall forward. He's never going to crash packs (you either have that or you don't....and he does not), I don't think he reads the play or the ball in flight as much as you'd hope, he can't create separation on a lead, to date he's been a shocker with the ball in hand - statistically he 'clanged' 36% of his possessions last season, which I'm pretty sure got close to leading the league in profligacy - his second efforts are a bit lacking (although in fairness, they often are for big blokes), and of all the Muppets, the one he most resembles is Beaker. So yeah, there is plenty to get on his case about.

But he's tall, he can run, and if you put the ball on his head he's a real chance to mark it. I'm not sure you can say the same about any of our other forwards. I think you have to pick him and hope the benefit to the team in having a marking target outweighs his deficiencies.

Years ago there was an awful afternoon spent at Subi watching North Melbourne score at will and a lot of people were getting stuck into the defense for letting it happen. David King had a field day.

The issue that day wasn't the defense... they were helpless trying to stem the tide that was allowed to break loose up the ground, through the middle.

Lesson to learn? Don't make the mistake of singling out your key position players for not performing if that's your view, when the midfield is delivering chaos. How any key forward is expected to deliver with the RoLy model of midfield into forward line attack is beyond me. It's not a model for success. Year after year the same complaints are made about structuring up, making space, leading etc... and the same mistake of singling someone out for it is made.

Tabs would look a lot better if he had a forward line to play in. The forward line would look a lot better if they were given a plan.

Yeti...thought I was being half consistent?? ..... in the space of 2 days I’ve asked for 2 complete knobends to be assistant coaches !! :)) ( ...I could go for the trifecta and ask for Langdon to be on our coaching staff...but that would be simply ridiculous and I’d have to give myself a damn good talking to...”!)

As for Tabs...I sincerely hope THE YOUNG MAN has a breakout season, and, yep, if he does theres going to be a lot of “TABB-BEN-NAAARRRGH!! “ in my lounge room. I apologize for that!!

There’s a reason why Tabs was drafted as a rookie. Being a supposedly a KPP, he was always going to struggle early doors. We’ve got several talls drafted in that’ll overtake Tabs in the coming years. For now, other than Apeness, he’s the best we’ve got. The last 18 months of his development, he’s starting to get the picture but he’s a C grader at best. Until we bring Hogan in, Tabs will have to do. Meanwhile, we’re building. Our forward 50 defensive mechanism is creeping up a few notches. My feeling is we’ll be a better team playing Port this year than the one that got belted by 10 goals last year. We’ve closed the gap, Shirley most would agree.

What’s there to be depressed about Walba, we’ve drafted well, our list is healthy, some promising signs shown so far, A. Pearce is up and about, Wilson is a gun and Fyfe ready to take the No.1 mantle again. Unlike other seasons I’m keeping the lid on, that’s why I see Freo making the bottom of the top 8. But if we’re 4-0 after Rd. 4, start your engines.

Tabs is success story. Most key forwards are taken very early in the draft or are F/S it academy selections. To get one who could be serviceable as a rookie pick is a great effort. And for Tabs to stick around despite limited opportunities says a little bit about him and the club.

Apeness is the disappointment. The best version of Apeness is exactly what we need - a first round pick who is a mountain who splits packs and rucks part-time - but it doesn’t look like we’ll ever see that. Morabito evolving into an Adam Goodes type mobile forward would have been handy too.

Tabener might be able to take a mark but he doesn't do enough damage. He plays too high so often is out of range, his kicking is ordinary at best. I think he plays too high as he doesn't read the play and gets drawn up the ground.

He needs to stay closer to the 50 if he is going to be an effective forward, he seems to want to play on the wing ala Daniel Bandy.

As for McCarthy I think he has a lot of promise he stays closer to goal for a start and actually provides a target in range of scoring, he kicked 3 yesterday which was good. But I don't see him as a full forward he isn't big enough to take on the big full backs and cant hold up in the contest. But he is quite good with the ball on the ground and has some good skills

to be honest I would swap him and Tabener in terms of roles and play Tabener closer to goal so we have a genuine marking target and use McCarthy as the high forward where he can operate in space and help out the mids.

Cletus, add to Fyfe the names Dale Kickett, Troy Cook, Shaun McManus, Jeff Farmer, Matt Pavlich, Antoni Grover, Carr bros, Mundy, Micky Barlow, Matt De Boer, Mikey Walters, Paul Haselby, Lukey Mac, Roger Hayden, Clancee Pearce, Tendai Mzungu, Lachie Neale, and apologies to the many I have not recalled off the top of my head.

The most offended by your comment would probably be Kickett, Pav, Shaun Mac, Cooky and Josh Carr.

Tabener is the best we've got besides Apeness? On what grounds could you even think Apeness was better than Tabener?
Apeness has not played one good AFL game in his injury riddled time and i can only think of one WAFL game that made me think he was going to worthwhile. Even when fit he's been disappointing.
