Nah Cletus, you have me all wrong.

Tabs simply isn't a power forward and I've said this many times before. He IS a good contested mark however. That doesn't mean he is ever going to mark everything. He won't. Neither did Pav.

I have said he is still the best tall forward we have. We don't have that many. We score more with him in the side.

In the absence of a Hogan, Franklin or a JK, he's the best we have. I'd like some a real power forward as Tabs is best used as a mobile second forward with either CamMac or Kersten as the third. Add in Fyfe drifting forward and we have a real forward line.

Then we need a functioning forward structure and an organised way of getting the ball in to the forwards. We lack both of those factors as well

banfield in for round one for me,from what i saw in the last half last week,he's very quick, can mark well and kicks goals, 3 more today,as much as i love ballas,it should be a tossup between ballas and matera, behind banfield.for a forward role.saw a couple of clips from news, reinforces my statement.
Rookie-listed Bailey Banfield pushed his claims for a spot on the plane after another impressive display.

The mature-aged Claremont product booted three majors and attacked the contest with intent across half-forward.

from freos web site.unfortunately a rookie.

You guys are forgetting Michael Apeness - he should be recovered from that pcl injury and back in the hunt for a spot in the forward 50. Top bloke, hope to see him back on the park this year.

Sutcliffe, d Pearce, ballas , Sheridan and MJ shouldn’t be in the round 1 team, surely we have learnt from early round vs Port last year...

i agree with you docker 76,as much as i have loved the way ballas and jonno, have served the club.
we are supposedly into a four year rebuild.
when are you going to get these guys out .like three and a half yers from now?
the ol statement will be ,well you cannot bring in too much youth at once.bullshit, how else are they going to prove whether they are good enough.
banfiled a classic case.though he might get in,as on freo's official website ,they stated he should be on the plan to port.he's a rookie does that not leave him out ?or is he a different type of rookie?

Cletus, you are using stats to suit your argument, like most exponents of stats do. Tabs led the comp last year in contested marks per game. Had he been given a few more opportunities, he probably would have been higher in the contested marks total for the season.

I will take a worker like Tabs over pretty boy sooks like Reiwoldts any day. Had they been treated by the selectors the way Tabs has, and they deserved it at times in their careers, they would still be searching the streets of Melbourne for their dummies.

Tabs is showing some great signs this preseason, carrying on his form from late last year, he just needs to crash a few more packs and impose himself physically if he is not getting a kick, but I really like what I see...

Well RM....its just depends n the level of success you want , I guess?. Obviously you're pretty happy with how weve gone for the past 23 seasons......
As for Riewoldt,....ok...he might have been a bloke we as opposition loved to hate, but primarily it was probably because he could clunk 'em, he could kick 'em, and he'd stop at nothing to 'go get it'!!

Now, I know you dont much of these attributes, but I reckon they would have been pretty handy attributes for anyone whos been dressed in purple for the past 23 years.
In fact, excepting Fyfe, I cant think of anyone who has played with the "I will get this bloody ball" attitude that Riewoldt did.
I would suggest that given he's a great mate of RoLy, maybe HE'S the sort of assistant coach that we need in the box? (...but I'm not gonna say that RM because you'll probably internally combust!!)

As for Tabs and the selectors...well...the boy has never 'belted the door down' during his 50 odd game carreer -and though Yeti wont like this - I reckon they did a pretty good job of "putting their foot down " last year and placing some expectation upon him.
And, hopefully, those 'hard yards' last year will result in a hungrier, more passionate, and hard working Tabs this year and for the next 5 or 6 to come.

No-one - not anyone - will be more happy to be yelling "TAB-BEN-NAAAR!!!!!" if the boy starts to show the signs of wanting to dominate his opponent! And, if he is "top shelf" for contested marks as your stats suggest at the moment, well just imagine how ' top shelf' he's gonna be when he starts believing he can dominate any opponent....!!

And...just quietly....a bloke like Riewoldt could help a bloke like Tabs, I reckon....

Jeez Cletus, try to be consistent will you.

You want Tabs to impose himself on a game then suggest having him mentored by one of the biggest sooks in the game. Spare me.

As for Tabs 50 games, well considering the number of of times he was subbed off or played a single game then got sent back to Peel for the next 3 or 4 weeks, it is hardly a surprise that he didn't develop as fast as others.

His development was hampered by less than adequate coaching and I'm not convinced that is changing much. First JLT game, he showed his value by playing deep as a forward. Yesterdays game, he was played as a high half forward. He played well but didn'y get any goals.

This was the same coach that tried to force Barlow to be a high half forward and when that didn't work, he dropped Barlow rather than put him where he was the best value.

Face it, we have a coach who plays favourites, is limited in his abilities and is inflexible. He tries to make players into what he wants for his limited game plan rather than adjusting his game plan to make best use of his resources. Compared to Clarkson, he is well back in the pack.

As for his marking, he topped Pavlich for the last 2 years of Pav's career in the contested marking stakes. Thats total marks from fewer games and unless you want to tell me that Pav couldn't mark then give Tabs the credit he's already due.

Oh and his name isn't pronounced Tab-ben-naar its TabenER. Only the knob jockeys on TV say it that way.
