Ballsy decisions tend to have a strongly held logic behind them. Barnett's logic was it wasn't where Carpenter wanted it, or where an independent panel deemed the ideal location.

That's not ballsy. It's self indulgent arrogance.

Well I'm going to upset the apple cart here by saying I can understand the logic behind a decision to place it at Burswood.

I can see see the logic but I do not agree with the assessment.

Burswood make sense from the point of view of creating an entertainment precinct so that the stadium isn't a stand alone fixture. Surrounding the oval with some form of entertainment district actually makes sense although its not often seen in Oz. I've seen it overseas and it works really well.

This could never be achieved in Subi. There is not enough room and there is too much hostility towards the existing stadium at both council and resident level. You could achieve it by resuming houses but only at great expense and massive protests. So....not gunna happen.

East Perth could achieve the same thing but at greater expense because there is no existing entertainment near that location.

Burswood has Packer's castle at least and whether you like it or not it does attract an audience. The public transport situation for all the complaints is very similar to Subi. One train line, limited parking and buses for the rest.

My preference was for East Perth. Better public transport - two train lines and an entertainment precinct could be devised although admittedly at greater cost. The river setting would have attracted private investment in my view. The possible negatives would also involve resistance from the locals to any large scale development.

The argument for Subi was flawed. It was generated by people who were anything but independent. Check out the articles from several years back about what people were buying land along Roberts Road and then tell me the push for Subiaco was independent.

I'm no great admirer of Barney but the Burswood decision is not without any logic as some people here are saying

Subi had unlimited parking, it just depended on how far you were prepared to walk. I could usually park within a 10 minute walk no worries. Burswood will have virtually no parking at all.

I really feel calling it Elizabeth Stadium is the way to go. You can't bring yourself to say Elizabeth Quay without sicking up.
We could shorten it to Libby, which should keep most who miss saying "Subi" sort of happy, and it also reminds us why we are sitting on a lead-ridden landfill flood-prone peninsula shooing away mozzies.

The way the stupid footbridge is going they should sell naming rights to that as well.

Did you know it is going to cost $100 million dollars from an original budget of $50 million and the government is going to cough up for it even though it was the contractor York Civil that stuffed this up big time!

I mean $100 million for a footbridge is just ridiculous! Recently they extended the Mitchell freeway by over 5km for the same price which included a number of bridges and new roads.

I really can't believe how this has been allowed to happen by the new government. They should have made the contractor foot the bill. Yes the new stadium is expensive but at least it has been delivered on schedule and to the original budget.

The Casino ....an entertainment precinct you say, I can see the similarities in the vein of the U.S. Carnivale television series set in the Great Depression and dust bowl. James is the ringmaster and Barney the organ grinder.

If the footbridge is has doubled in cost and is not ready then how is it on budget and on schedule?

Stadium construction = on budget and on schedule

Footbridge = twice original budget and at least a year behind schedule

When you combine the two the overall project is probably over budget

You Beaut retraction. I'm not sure about the footing the bill details, but I think they wanted to substantially vary from the original contract to have it made locally instead of overseas. I think they also said the original contract for the footbridge allowed the contractor leeway for the problems?

Yeti, I'm not sure why an entertainment precinct should be a driver for a stadium's location. Surely plonking it near Subi or East Perth provided plenty of options for the average punter.

"On time and on budget"? Sounds like a Barney quote you might read in the papers. Or a presser from the liberal opposition.

I don't remember anyone putting a fixed cost on the stadium, seemed to be an elastic figure, which started at 700m way back in 2015. I don't remember anyone saying it would cost over a bn, even though most people had a feeling it would.

Apparently, it came in at around 1.2bn. But they kept the cost of the train infrastructure out of all estimates, and that took the total cost to 1.6bn. And that's without the bridge.

So yeah, if you accept it's actually more than double the original estimate, and they had 400m of extra transport costs they kept hidden, then it was. Sort of. Not.

Who cares what the stadium costs? What it will generate for the state in the next 50 years will dwarf the construction cost. I love the fact it's in Burswood just to spite the Zuni council if nothing else. They can't even develop the markets over there.

Same with footbridge . Yes 100 million is a lot. But if it's mainly built locally then the state recoups some of that money via state and federal taxes, not to mention the increased spending from the job created.

It's a killer stadium in the best place in Perth. Thank God Colin was in charge when the decision was made.

If that’s the best place in Perth then why would anyone bother coming here?
