Sure you take the money, but you don't call it the name they pay to stick on it for 5 years.

The fight between the stadium and the AFL pay TV + online broadcast partners is going to be fun to watch.

If you're the State Government, you're probably thinking that $5 million a year pays for the 77 nurses needed to treat the kids with Legionnaires' disease contracted from the new Children's Hospital / Infectorium.

I'm not sure they had any choice but to take the money. And let's face it, it's not like we're losing much in the way of historical value or linguistic flair in abandoning the moniker Perth Stadium. Snooze.

Had Barnett built the stadium on either of the two much cheaper/better sites preferred to Burswood, maybe they could run an argument about whether $30 million was worth the price of losing the name Perth Stadium. But they didn't. They built it at the most expensive location on a whim of a bloke frustrated he never got to build the Crocodile Superhighway from the Ord River. Their judgement means little to me.

Now, someone get to work on making sure there is full strength beer.

You really think they weren't going to flog the name off?

Besides, how many taxi drivers would plug the wrong venue into their GPS and end driving people to Wellington St?

$5million seems like chicken feed compared to WA's annual budget. A proverbial drop in the ocean. So this decision is probably going to do nothing toward budget fixing.
It's a short-sighted mistake. A sell-out.

Which would be handy, Drubbing, because I think that's where the shuttle busses leave from.

Can you name any stadium besides the MCG that doesn't have naming rights? Means nothing to me as I'll always call it The Craypot.
Naming rights went to Subi and nobody cut sick* over that.

*Urban Dictionary-Cut Sick-to go psycho, but in an awesome way; to go mad, really angry

Just remembered this one from back in the day and thought I'd chuck it in for no particular reason at all except that it was one of those sayings that sounded cool but actually came out sounding stupid when you used it.

Fun fact - Burswood is spelled the way it is because the painters buggered up the sign for the original train station. It was supposed to be Burrs-Wood.

Burrs-Wood is what I've been getting from the bench seats at Subi. Bring on the Craypot.

To answer Agarn's question, most of the cricket grounds in Australia, which double as major AFL and other sports venues for their states:

i) Sydney Cricket Ground
ii) Adelaide Oval
iii) Woollongabba Ground
iv) Bellerive Oval
v) WACA Ground

I don't have a problem with it. $50M is a large sum of money and over 3% of the $1.45B cost to build it. That's money going back to taxpayers.

But having said that, I would have preferred Perth somewhere in the name, even if it was Optus Stadium, Perth.

In generations to come, how will researchers know where Telstra Dome was? Does anyone know now?
The real farce is that Cricket Aus will still call it Perth Stadium, as will the non-commercial ABC.
I bet that there will be a time when its called Crown Stadium — it might as well be now, 'cos James Packer will be the one who makes most profit from it.

Interesting Davo that it's only the cricket ground venues that don't have naming rights.

Checking the NFL grounds in the U.S. and as far as I can work out only 4 of 31 venues don't have naming rights.

It's the way of the world. As someone else said who ever called Subiaco Oval, Domain Stadium anyway?
