The go home factor is real and despite our great record at retention the issue is only going to get bigger and bigger for all clubs. I can see a time in the not too distant future that a team like Freo will pick almost exclusively WA kids. Overall I think the go home factor will favour us more as we will have a larger selection of WA lads playing over east than the Vics will have of Vic Metro kids playing for us. Simply a numbers game.

The simple truth is we all have an opinion on who might become a champ but no one can know, it will be to some extent luck as to which kid becomes the best.

Make no mistake though, the selection of who we should take out of these top 5 or 6 kids should be considered against the risk of homesickness. Other than who has the most elite kicking skills, I hope Freo are concentrating on working out who is most likely to stick it out in Perth and who could possibly want to go home.

Freo have turned the Weller bombshell into a mini positive but as mentioned in a recent post, its almost always better to have the good kid you know, who is three years into his development than to start all over again with another kid, who might be good. Someone argued that it doesnt matter, if we lose one later we will be compensated with another high pick. By that logic all we do is recruit 18 yr olds, play them until they just start to come good and then lose them at 21.

The Toast will recruit 4 or 5 West Aussies with their raft of picks between 11 at 40. Freo needs to be very carefull who they pick here. Ive gone off Raynor from my pick of a month ago for that very reason.

Just going back to Weller, I normally look at this site to track fringe players, but it is pretty objective on the AFL games as well:

According to the AFL site Brisbane appear to have narrowed their first choice to either Raynor or Brayshaw.

Ablett Snr 185
Dunstall 188
Carey 192
Riewoldt 193
Pavlich 192

Height is an advantage for a key position but you don't need to be an an absolute giant to be able to kick a lot of goals. Strength, endurance, marking and kicking ability and just knowing how to play the game are just as important.

Sure there is a freak out there called Franklin that is 199cm but I don't reckon his height helps him as much as his strength and speed because he's not so great at marking overhead.

No problem in my book picking a key forward that is shorter than a big gangly 200cm.

How far back in history do you want to go. The game's changed plenty since all of those guys were playing except for Pav and Reiwoldt and they're both retired too!

Take a look at the current day best marking forwards. Now whether you rate them or not is another thing but they would be grabbed by any other club if they were available. You won't find any at 192cms.

Kennedy, Lynch, Walker, Hawkins, Cameron, J Reiwoldt, Boyd, Franklin, Brown, Hogan, Wright, Patton

Wait and see all the talk this year when Lynch decides whether or not to stay or leave at GC. It will be drag on like the Martin and Lever sagas. 199cms and don't tell me we wouldn't want him at Freo if there was any chance we could get him.

Jonathon Frampton if available to be drafted with a later pick, pencil it in.

Well, I’ve watched all the draftee highlights packages on afl.com so far, and bearing in mind I have never actually seen any of them play, I reckon we should take Jayden Stephenson.

Yes there are a lot of really good tall forwards that are 195cm plus........and those players you have listed Corporal I would rate as the best in the game right now. So there is definitely merit in going tall if there are talented footy players of this size available.

My point is I don't think the club should be too concerned about height if they rate a young key forward prospect highly who is around 192cm. I just really want to see them secure a forward that can kick 50+ goals a year and I would hate to see them pick two mids and pass up on a goal kicker because he is considered too short.

Yes the game has changed but if Pavlich or Carey were still playing or drafted now they would dominate.

I have been looking at the draft machine on the AFL site. I’ve looked at the smokies and the late pics as we’ve got so many late pics. There’s some pretty nice highlight packages. Gordon Narrier is a Perth midfielder who has pretty silky skills. Ben miller is a WA ruck smokey who has a good turn of speed and picks up the ground ball well. I like Liam Ryan as a small forward but he may be gone before all our late pics. I like Hugh Dixon, a key forward from tassie he takes a lovely clunk and is predicted in the 30-70 range. Tassie boys know they’ve got to move to play AFL. Hopefully we can unearth a few late gems.

Ben Millar would be a good one if he lasts that long.

This is like reading the Magic Millions Sale book without the sires and dams information.

We need to know more about their parents.

Lift your game you other contributors. How did their Mums go in the Grade 5 100metres. Was their Dad any good at hurdling. What are their grand dams like. What we need are sprinters with a stayer grand sire. How did that year's crop from the same sire go with shin soreness (finding this out could be a bit delicate.)

Twenty pages on this topic and I'm still confused.
