TOPIC: Draft Picks

Forget about the whole flight risk stuff
We’ve gotta take best available and even if they do decide to go home after a few years, if they are any good we’ll usually get something decent in exchange anyhow.
Out of the top 7, the only one that doesn’t grab me is Cerra for some reason
So for me at pick
ii Raynor or LDU (probably in that order, though nothing in it)
v. Brayshaw, Dow, Fogarty, Stephenson (probably in that order, though nothing in it)
I’d be happy with any of those combos
Dare to dream?
Brissy takes Brayshaw. Freo takes LDU and somehow Raynor slides to 5.
I would dance the jig

Cletus pushing young blokes out of their comfort zone aint a bad idea. Some will flourish but others will flounder. As was said we have a good record of holding our interstate recruits. When I was young (sorry) we left home as soon as possible got jobs traveled overseas or interstate often before we were 18 – it was a good thing. These days many stay at home well past their 20's. Many are as soft as soap and have little idea of how to look after themselves or what goes on in the real world. Yeah I know the economic situation has changed – we are richer but poorer in so many ways. 'Kids' can handle so much more than they are given credit for – they just need the chance or circumstance to shine.

Keeping in mind that we chase Hogan next year and that the draft next year is good for talls (apparently), my choice (if available) would be:
2 = LDU (mid)
5 = Fogarty (fwd/mid an each way bet)

1.UDL-midfield
2.Stephenson-midfield/clive like ability forward.

Fogarty at 192cms is being talked of as a key forward? There are midfielders like Cripps at 195cms. It's also the same height as Kersten and McCarthy I think and they're not key big marking forwards.

Yup...absolutely happy to take the best available at pick 2 & 5 no matter where they are from (all though I would rate disposal skills way more highly than any other factor i.e. Speed over 5m or 2 min time trials at 17).

And yes, agree completely that most of them are as "soft as a junket sandwich" these days....

My point was, are any of these kiddies putting their hand up and indicating they want to come - or be happy to come - to Freo ???? And it concerns me, that, from what I read, no-one - particularly the homegrown fella's - are 'itching' to come to us.

I still crinch at the thought of Mora at Pick 4 and we somehow landed a Brownlow or maybe 2 at Pick 20. My stance on the draft being a lottery continues and while you give the recruiters plenty of credit, there's no guarantees. You just hope that the stars are aligned when we are marching as one, on the road to the holy grail.

Soft? It's really only how adaptable they are vs what options they have to play where it best suits them. These days, for better or for worse, players, even 2 year novices, have more say in where they get to play.

Clubs can try to select draftees who are more likely to stay, but that limits the available talent pool. Best they create an environment players feel attached to as the primary strategy. The end goal is to build the strongest list possible, not to keep every single player.

"Next year the draft will be good for talls" sounds a bit like "Don't trade your first and second round future picks, next year is a super draft" to me.

Joel Garner's a bit bloody old isn't he? Would make a good tall forward but could be drawn to cricket instead of football.

Nah, man. He said I want it, you better give it to me. It was a present from my mother. I don't like cricket, no....
But, he will play some good footy in years to come. And he will get picked up next year.
Now, let's talk about Sandringham's young midfield gun Andy Roberts.

Pavlich was 192 cm and kicked 700 goals in his career.. No reason why Fogarty can't develop into that type of player who can do anything..

True, but I think there are plenty of reasons why it is unlikely to happen again, one being that Pav was a massive exception to the rule. Can't think of anyone else around his time or since with the same height who has done anything like him as a forward.Recruiters now wouldn't even consider a 192cm player as a key forward.

As great a player as the mighty Pav was I'm sure we never expected him to be that good. His type are a rarity and we were so lucky he came and stayed with us.

Also Fogarty has been generally playing as a midfielder and spending some time forward similar to Fyfe, so if we did pick him I don't think it would be as a key forward.
