Look on the brightside, once upon a time we'd have given our pick 5 up for Jack Watts.

Eventually
Flick 66 to Gold Coast for Matera would seem a reasonable outcome under the circumstances.

I wasn't part of this or other interacting negotiations and I don't actually understand how the trading system works or what it means when a player is out of contract but I totally have an opinion on whether this constitutes grounds for denigrating the club management.

Disappointed. How many pick 66's get a regular AFL game? Balic will be playing for Melbourne every week.

I thought the way GWS handled the CamMac situation was appalling. The current system – in the name of equalisation – requires boys just out of high school to pick up their lives and move interstate to ply their trade. Most of this kids adjust to living away from their homes and families and many thrive, but a small percentage don’t. How you deal with those few individuals who don’t cope says a lot about the values of a club.

GWS showed their hand in this respect. They were willing to sabotage CamMac’s career, and adversely affect his life, because they didn’t consider they were getting a return on their asset. That sort of ruthless (bordering on amoral) approach may or may not help them win football games over the coming years (it certainly hurt them in this instance), but I think it’s a disgraceful way to treat young men. I wish them nothing but ill-fortune.

We’re facing the same situation with Balic. It would have been nice to have received a better pick, but with an injury history and very little body of work behind him, it’s really hard for us to demonstrate value. He missed all of his TAC Cup year, and has played 4 AFL games. He has been serviceable in the WAFL (contrast with Michie who won Peels B&F). He had to return home during the season twice.

I would think a third round pick would be what I would be comfortable offering for a player in his position. Melbourne offered pick 66. What do you do? You ask for a higher pick and you explore better options. None are forthcoming. So, what do you do?

It seems that some would be willing to throw Balic to the wolves GWS-style, or chuck a tanty and get nothing by pushing him to the PSD, because we didn’t get what we want. I don’t think it’s in our long-term interest to be that sort of club, and I’d feel worse about supporting a club like that.

By dint of being a WA based club we stand to benefit more from returning players than we lose going the other way. What long-term good does it do us to throw a young bloke like Balic under the bus for a pick 45 instead of 66? I reckon from the end of the second round teams are just making intelligent guessing on selections anyway.

It's easy to take pot shots from the outside without knowing what's going on within the four walls of the footy club.

Melbourne gave up Watts for 31. We gave up Balic for 66. There's some symmetry there.

Balic is not injury prone. He had a potentially long term injury which is why he slipped so far in the draft after being touted a first rounder. We took the gamble on being able to effectively rehabilitate him from that wrist injury, which we have done, and he has played a season of footy now without recurrence. One of the few good news stories in this area we have had, by the way. He now has the best 6-8 years of his footy career ahead of him after a couple of years in the system building a fitness base and adjusting to AFL structures. Although critical of our team for drafting him at the time, given our record with injured players, at the end of this season I personally had him in a similar category to Weller as being an important part of our midfield over the next 3-4 years.

If he is homesick, by all means send him back east, but put him on the open market early on and see what interest there is.

66 was a complete rort.

I agree that we shouldn’t be throwing young men to wolves or under buses but I also think that both clubs Melbourne and Gws handled the situations in an appalling manner. Gws really did throw Cammac out the door to bide his time for 12 months effectively stalling his career. Melbourne were just shrewd knowing they had a very good deal for their pick 66. However if we had sent Balic to the PSD it wouldn’t have been sending him to the wolves nor would it have affected his career just that Melbourne would have had to work harder to get his services.
I hope the young man enjoys his time at home. Freo sorted out his wrist injury and got a raw deal for wanting to do the right thing by him.

Cam threw himself under the bus not GWS.
Cam needs to give up the smokes and stop hanging around his crack smoking mates if he's serious about his football career.
Oh and for the record Melb had pick 47 not St Kilda's pick 45.

First, clubs had 37 chances to take him ahead of us at pick 38. For all the talk of his 'first round' talent, the reality was he was the last pick in the second round.

Second, this deal was on the cards for months, and we only made the deal on the second last day. Do you really think the club didn't explore other options in that time? We can't leave it any later because we need to focus on the 100% totally happening deal for Hogan tomorrow.

So, having exhausted our options, we push him out the door to the PSD, we get nothing, and we signal to the league that when players want to go home it's appropriate for clubs to hold the line rather than make a deal. 75% of the 'go home' conversations will be players wanting to come to Freo. How does it help us to foster a spirit of not making deals at the expense of players?

This isn't Gumtree. This deal isn't done in isolation. The same people are in the same rooms having the same discussions every year. Relationships count. How agents view a club counts. How the clubs treats unhappy players counts.

Taking pot shots on individual deals without understanding all of those dynamics is flawed.

Alot of what you say makes sense & then you go and throw "75% of the 'go home' conversations will be players wanting to come to Freo" into the mix and sully your argument.

I hope we are building up a lot of good will amonst the AFL fraternity. I think this going home to Melbourne started back in the day ( mid nineties) with Jeff White.

Stoney, wouldn't you say we've benefited more from players wanting to come back to WA than players wanting to leave?

We brought in four players last season that way. If we get Matera and Wilson this season, and lose Weller and Balic, that's 75% of those discussions being about players coming to Freo.

Clubs making deals for players to return home disproportionately benefits Freo.

I agree that it is good for the club to exhibit values in how it interacts with its players, other clubs and the league - maybe even one day its fans! - and so on. But what I don’t get here was why it was only Melbourne who we were dealing with?
