TOPIC: Weller to GC

Seems like it's smelling like roses down at Freo to me.

B.Hill, Hamling & Kersten have all come 'home' to WA, with Wilson and Matera to follow, and all to Freo without Wet Toast getting a look in.

If Weller was going to head home at the end of next season anyway - having indicated he was going to reject the 4 year offer we have tabled for him - what do you think he'd be worth as an uncontracted player? A 2nd rounder at best, IMHO. Particularly if GC pick up the Wooden Spoon as expected and they could draft him for nothing.

I'm not happy about him leaving but he's been thrown up every year at trade time and this time he's pulled the trigger.

Good on him for coming out now and telling the club at a time when we can maximise his trade value. Probably would have preferred it a week ago so Crozier could have been retained, but so be it. At least he didn't retire after the trade period ala Yarran last year and McPhee a few years ago or wait until next season to ask for a trade.

For what it's worth, if we can get 2 second rounders plus Matera and on-trade one of the second rounders for Wilson - then that's a fair trade for all parties. Talk of pick 2 sounds like an ambit claim - particularly as we'll probably have to trade that for other picks to get the Wilson deal over the line.

However, recruiting anyone other than West Australians must now be viewed as a risky strategy (or any interstate player for any clubs for that matter). As good as our track record has been over the journey of keeping in-demand, interstate players - free agency and a far more mercenary approach by both players and clubs now means loyalty is worth next to nothing.

Problem as I see it this year is - all the best talent (i.e. 1-10 draft picks) are all interstate players. Rather than paying overs for a WA kid, maybe it'd be worth it in the long run for us to trade down our first pick this year for an early one next year when a stack of quality WA kids are due to come through.

I know the club has said pick 5 is off-limits, but in light of developments today, I think it's worth looking at.

I think it’s a good opportunity for the club to get a pick that’s slightly better than what Weller is worth.

I think it is short sighted to think we can hold onto every player we draft. Some times you get a guy in the draft who is good value. He shows you he is very capable and you try to keep him. But sometimes for whatever reason he wants to go home.

1. Its not an indictment on the club is players want to go home. If it was a wave of players wanted to leave then yes. But its a small number.
2. Seeing as the player was picked at a good spot in the draft and has shown better than average potential, you have a good piece to make a trade. We'll likely get better than what we gave for him back as compensation, if we play it smart. That means we improve the resources we have to build a list by buying low and selling high.
3. Drafting and trading go hand in hand. When we should be angry is when we pay overs for a player at the draft and they don't develop and we don't get anything for them in a trade. We've had quite a bit of that in recent times and its one of the reasons we bottomed out as we needed to build up resources again.

I know what you're all really thinking.
Who's the next best looking Freo docker on the list?
I tell ya, he's one good looking rooster. Big loss.

I agree with Wallace (actually he agrees with me as said in an earlier post) - Weller is worth either a first round pick (around 10-15) + Matera OR two high second round picks (21, 26) + Matera. Out of that we get Wilson. I favour the latter deal. We offer GWS 21 for Wilson. So the Weller deal gives us Wilson, 26 and Matera. We still keep pick 5.
I think we are dreaming if we think we get Lynch in this exchange or Wright for that matter.
Weller wants to go and GWS want him desperately we should be able secure this to give us what we want.

To trade Crozier and to loose Weller this way is laughable

Forget the pick, take Jack Martin and nick Weller's Ray Bans before you put him on a bus.

And importantly, with both Weller and Crozier gone, how are we going to fill our "pretty boy" quota next year?

Clayton stated categorically GC are taking pick 2 to the draft after the Weller bombshell. It won't be in play. Weller also said if it doesn't get done this year he will go next year. Not doing Freo any favours there. This is definitely a bad outcome, not a good one which can be taken advantage of.

3 second round picks, they get Weller and one of our 3rd round picks.
If we also get Matera in that mix then we trade our pick 80 odd.
We then take one of the 2nd round picks and get Wilson.
