Here’s a list of our first round draft picks that have played at least 100 games for us:

1995 #1 C.Waterhouse 106 games
1996 #12 H.Black 138 games (in 2 stints)
1997 #6 J.Walker 151 games
1998 #2 J.Longmuir 139 games
1999 #2 P.Haselby 208 games
1999 #4 M.Pavlich 353 games
2002 #13 B.Schammer 129 games
2008 #3 S.Hill 190* games

Our 1st round picks for 2011 (Sheridan) & 2013 (Apeness) are still going and 2014 onwards have yet to have the opportunity to play 100 games (including Weller).

It should be noted that we had no first round selections in 2000, 2004 & 2006.

So for all the criticism at the time that our early drafting was poor (and it was, even if this analysis makes it look better), our best return (and longest streak) as far as at least 100 games played from first round draft picks was between 1995-1999.

Been pretty slim pickings since then but Mora was robbed through injury (2009). Same could be said of Pitt (2010) due to his heart condition.

That said, we managed to make our first GF in 2013 and our longest sustained finals run (2012-2015) without getting much out of our first round draft picks from 2003 onwards.

Guess it just goes to show that the draft really is a lottery and it’s a clubs ability to find gems with later picks and through the rookie list that is of far greater significance. In that respect, we have done particularly well.

With all the speculation of who will replace our midfield gaps I was wondering, with the new crop of defenders ready to grab spots next year, would Lee Spurr be a good addition to our midfield group. He's hard at the ball, big bodied and has a thumping kick capable of scoring multiple goals from the 50 metre arc. It's just that he seems to be getting squeezed out of the defensive group but is still a very capable member of our senior leadership group.

Categorising picks or basing expectations based on by round alone skews things unhelpfully. It's only a guide, but the AFL's draft pick index suggests that pick 20 - where we took Jayden Pitt in the 'first round' - is only half as valuable as pick 5, where we will pick this year. For most of the last decade Freo has been picking late in the first round of the draft, and some of those drafts were already weak because of zone pre-selections. Where we have had an early pick, we've made solid picks.

Why can't a player say I got a better deal and I want to play there? I can deal with that better than I am homesick.

With Weller now halfway out the door, they better not forget Suban because we do need some backups now.

So could we claim that Michael Walters is a first rounder who slipped through to pick 53? Just because a player is selected in the first round, it doesn't always point to his footy ability, sometimes it points to the ability of the recruiting team. There are a plethora of first round picks who have not got to 50 AFL games, and guess what, not all of them were selected by Freo. It should be called a lottery, not a draft.

Spurr to midfield? No, a real plodder just getting slower. Thumping kick? No, in fact minimal penetration at best. Will give every ounce for every second? Yes, always...but a move ti the midfield at 30? No.

What about some young WA talent in the deal?
Callum Ah Chee 2015 draft pick 8 forward/midfeld
Josh Schoenfeld 2015 draft pick 34 midfield (broke B Hill 3km time trial)

Anyone seen them play?

Long term girlfriend wants to start a family ... Is there any more reason to stay Lachie ? If he's worried about the contract length shorten it and add a few more dollars and/ or just say no
