The reality is Weller is more valuable to GC17 than he is to Freo.
There are shades of Freo 2001 about GC17. Connelly and Schwab probably knew on paper that we were paying a high price to get Croad, but the existence of the club was on the line, they needed to build some sort of positive momentum, and they thought they couldn't wait for a draft pick. It led to some bad decisions, but those pressures were real.
Weller is a talented kid who calls Queensland home, and therefore is happy to join GC17 and likely to stay. There are probably only a handful of players in the league you can say that about. The club is going nowhere fast, and their one recognisable player is leaving. That means CG17 were willing to throw money at Weller.
$4 million over 5 years would be an overpay if Freo (or any other club) had offered that. But from GC17's perspective it makes sense. Good on them for taking the initiative, and Weller is well within his rights to want to take that sort of offer. Not everyone is Matthew Pavlich
It's a national competition, and sometimes this stuff happens. Our reigning Doig Medallist was handed to us on a plate. Hawthorn didn't do anything wrong, it just suited Hill to come home.
I reckon using Weller doing the same as an excuse to throw shade at the club is unfair.
