If Weller is replacing a dual brownlow winner who got paid a squillion to go there from geelong then 2 first round picks would be the minimum requirement.

AFL Trade Radio this morning stated that Freo should demand 2 first round picks if they are offering up $4 million over 5 years. Granted it was Matthew Lloyd and Kane Cornes talking.

I think he has been fairly happy over here but it seems the Suns have come at him with a big offer that is too good to turn down

Dear Lloyd & Bond,

here is the deal you table to GC,
they give us
pick 21 878
pick 24 785
pick 26 729
value 2392

we give them
Weller
pick 41 412
pick 42 395
value 807

Net value for Weller 1585 equivalent to just over pick 8 (1551)

Then we offer pick 24 to GWS for Wilson.
Depending you who you are targeting in the draft we either go with picks 5, 21 & 26, or if you want another top 10 pick offer the Saints 21 & 26 (value 1607) for pick 8 (value 1551, which they have indicated is on the table for multiple picks)

we end up with Wilson plus 2 x early second rounders or Wilson plus pick 8.

One thing that is evident is that Gold coast really rate him if they have offered $800,000 a season , So they are the ones that need to come up with a deal , And pay overs to get it done .

In all of this what stands out for me is that GC really rate him as a midfielder. That's what we recruited him for so why the f do we continually recruit midfielders and play them as half backs? Weller started on the wing and half forward until this year when they sent him to half back for the whole season, basically swapping positions with Crozier. Now we've lost both of them.

Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Crozier, Blakely, Weller all midfielders used as half backs. When any of them were dropped back to peel that were used as midfielders.

Maybe the penny has finally dropped and you recruit specifically for what you need with Ryan and Wilson being exclusively half backs.

We aren't living in an old CC ad are we ? We can say no .... It seems the balance has tipped markedly in the players favour ( which we have benefitted from I know ). As has been stated before, will it come to only picking players from the clubs state so players can't trot out the "family reasons" card to bolster their bank balance.

If he was coming the other way then no way would I contemplate giving up a first rounder.
He can play, he has been in the system for a few years and he has some real currency given that GC want him.
This going home business doesn’t wash with me in this instance. His family relocated from Victoria to the Coast as Mav was playing there. Mav is now in Victoria but home for the Wellers is Gold Coast now.
This is about a good deal for Lachie and I suspect it’s been in the pipeline for a while. That’s good coin he has been offered.
Freo should get overs for him and that can’t be bad.
Does anybody here rate Langdon as a player - I think that kid has a real chance of making it with an extended run in the bigs. If he doesn’t get it then he could be next to go.

Langdon will/should be running through the midfield. Could ethan hughes get a crack in the middle? Strong bodied, has balance and strenth in the contest...and confidence is building...maybe? Has Spurr got many games in 2018?

The reality is Weller is more valuable to GC17 than he is to Freo.

There are shades of Freo 2001 about GC17. Connelly and Schwab probably knew on paper that we were paying a high price to get Croad, but the existence of the club was on the line, they needed to build some sort of positive momentum, and they thought they couldn't wait for a draft pick. It led to some bad decisions, but those pressures were real.

Weller is a talented kid who calls Queensland home, and therefore is happy to join GC17 and likely to stay. There are probably only a handful of players in the league you can say that about. The club is going nowhere fast, and their one recognisable player is leaving. That means CG17 were willing to throw money at Weller.

$4 million over 5 years would be an overpay if Freo (or any other club) had offered that. But from GC17's perspective it makes sense. Good on them for taking the initiative, and Weller is well within his rights to want to take that sort of offer. Not everyone is Matthew Pavlich

It's a national competition, and sometimes this stuff happens. Our reigning Doig Medallist was handed to us on a plate. Hawthorn didn't do anything wrong, it just suited Hill to come home.

I reckon using Weller doing the same as an excuse to throw shade at the club is unfair.

The ‘going home’ factor for Weller is to do with his long term girl friend who is from the Gold Coast, obviously once 4 & 5 year contracts started getting thrown around she has said she might like to start a family in that timeframe and would prefer the support of her family (and his) if that were to happen.
