I like the trade-down option in some circumstances. Last year we (roughly) traded pick 5 (and a chance at SPS) for Logue, McCarthy and Hamling. There is some risk that, but I think it was a risk worth taking.

I believe success is determined as much by the quality of your worst players on the park as your best, but you do need some star-calibre players to be an elite team. While on that basis adding three regular players last year was a good call, I’m not sure we have enough star players. Fyfe, Walters and Neale for mine are stars. Stephen Hill when fit is as well, and his brother knocking on the door. Bennell could be anything (or nothing). After that, we don’t have a lot of star-power.

I’d rather Freo use pick 5 this year, especially as there looks to be a bit of a drop in talent from the first half-dozen to the next batch. Wilson would be a great, but if we can conjure a second-rounder combined between the Balic / Crozier picks, we’d be better off using that.

DD, every club bar Freo reckoned Darcy wasn't worth two bob either. If he is a footy player but not fit, his fitness can be improved pretty quickly. But if he is fit but not a footy player, it takes a lot more time to make him a footy player. Haven't we learnt anything from the Moller/Clarke type of recruitment

With Wilson coming off half back (and Ryan), Lachie Weller should be playing in the guts. Has pace and a beautiful kick and looks likely every time he goes in the middle. I still think he will be a star for us.

RM i would not put Moller in the same league as Zac , Without injury i think Hendrix was a very handy AFL ruckman, And played 101 games (hence the interest from other clubs) the only time Moller could get a game is is when Roly was playing funny buggers in round 23 , Moller was even ordinary at WAFL level .

Well my point is, we recruited Darcy, and he is a natural footy player. He stepped straight into a difficult role, as a teenager, without the "year of full pre-season" that seems to be required by an AFL player these days, and performed very well. Zac Clarke, while promising, would not have been able to do that as he is not a natural footy player. Darcy knew his limitations with fitness etc., and learnt very quickly how to give his best for the team within those limitations. Because he is a natural footballer. Recruit footballers, not the people who beep test off the scale, or can run Olympic grade time trials, but would not know where to go on a footy field.

That does depend on what you need. It's usually possible to turn the right athlete into a footy player over a few years. So it depends whether you're trying to win games this year or a premiership in six years.

Brad Hill was pick 33 in the 2011 draft. His tests at the NAB combined was what got him drafted. He's not a natural footballer but geez he can run. 3 premierships and Doig later, he's proving the athelete v footballer theory wrong. In today's game, being a great athlete wouldn't go astray.

Not sure that many would have seen Bradley play in his junior days but suffice to say if you did you'd go along with my way of thinking. A good Hawks mate of mind even stated that Hill is perhaps the luckiest player to have one let alone 3 premierships.Clearly he's gone ahead in leaps and bounds. You might one to do a little scouting to identify pure footballers and pure athletes.
