TOPIC: Pick 5

There's a toss up that I've not been able to answer. Would you prefer an un-proven draft pick over a recycled player that isn't quite in the top bracket? i.e. No to Menzel ... just like I could never see why we got people like Jack Anthony or Colin Sylvia. ... but if we got Hogan, I'd prefer him as a CHF in the mold of Waynkery rather than a key forward.

Shane, most recruiters would most likely have gone for Pav on exposed form, a more interesting question is "Who would Phil Smart pick, Pav or Fyfe?"

I don't mean to harp on about this but you're not thinking 4th dimensionally

Whoever we get with pick number 5, we can put them in jumper number 5. By rights we should get pick number 3, because jumper number 3 is also vacant. Can someone let the AFL know?

Don't tell them, just get Bondy to do the "Fremantle use pick three to draft Brander" thing. You know it makes sense.

Morgan, Majak Daw has averaged 4 games a year for the past 8 seasons. Not sure he is value, even for pick 135.

+1 with your comment Raglan. I'd rather start targeting a Ruck Forward proven at WAFL state level. Even someone like a Mitchell DZELEBDZIC from South Freo rezzies or a Tyler Keitel from West Perth. Anyone that has kicked over 50 goals a year is worth looking at.

2016 backwards.
Setterfield, Parish, DeGoey, Kolodjashnij, Stringer, Buntine, Polec, Cunnington, Hurley, Grant, Pendlebury, Franklin, B McLean, J McVeigh.
Went back a bit further because it was easier to put into one post.
Having a look back over each draft historically prior to McVeigh very few successes at 5 and even top ten was hit and miss. The opinion that the draft is a lottery may stem from this era.

Pendlebury and Franklin we would wish for. Hurley? The recent picks yet to prove themselves - maybe Parish?

Great post Fooz after watching a lot of Wafl i tnink Tyler Keitel has good upside as has height ,good kick and is a goer

But then again brad lloyd and bond dont rate walf players and then we have to try and buy them back when they go well ie Adams

Docker By The Sea mentioned all the key talls taken as top picks lately but neglected to mention those picked ahead of the draft who would have gone 1 or 2 like Hogan, Cameron and Dixon, probably the 3 best young KPF's in the comp along with Daniher who was a FS pick. The best talls go very early and are rarely developed from picks outside of the first round, you need to strike when you are lucky enough to have early picks.

As for Jezza's claims about talls being irrelevant in finals, it's actually the opposite. Boyd effectively won the GF last year for the dogs (who also had Stringer causing havok) while Buddy being held was the breaking point for the Swans going the other way. Similarly this year Reiwoldt was effectively BOG while the disappearance of Jenkins/Walker hurt the crows as they bombed long after winning the footy in the middle so often.

We desperately need that sort of player up forward as others have mentioned, someone to attract the ball and bring his teammates into the game. McCarthy and Kersten aren't that sort of player and Tabs has struggled despite a litany of extended stints in the side. We need someone in this draft (Brander) or to somehow convince Hogan to come home.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Reality is Hogan will be playing for Melb next year. Lets hope we can sign Tabs and with improvement in the middle next year supply will be much better and Tabs and Mac will be a dangerous duo.
