That's 2 Premierships now that have been one by effectively teams of midfielders! Skilful, hard tackling, defensive press surely that's what Ross has been trying to develop for 8 years. He nearly got there a few times but in our case the skill just wasn't there. Time to forget chasing the elusive future power forwards and draft the toughest skilled midfielders available, surely with pick 5 we can find one?

You still need some type of forwards to kick goals, not just midfielders.

I think you'll find all the leading goalscorers over the years are forwards, not midfielders.

You need to be able to kick it to them accurately.

That said, both teams today went the flour bomb into 50, a lot. The difference with these two instead of Fremantle - is they tended to score doing it, instead of watching it come right back out.

Hardwick has made 1 GF and won in a year where the Comp was as even as it's ever been. Roly made 4 GFs when there were juggernaut teams and eras of superpowers. We'll find out won't we if he's a real dud. For now we dare to dream.

My point being that our coach is and has been on the right track all along. Just a bit more skill from the likes of our midfielders/forwards in 2014 and we may have done a Bulldogs/Tigers. With Walters, Matera, Ballas, Langdon,Grey, Tucker at the feet of Tabs/Hogan and McCarthy you have goal kicking power surely equal to the Tigers. We just need to add a couple more tough skilful mids and tighten up our defence and I cannot see why we couldn't be up there again within 3 years.

I'd argue a power forward significantly increases your prospects of finishing top 4 which is where a non-Vic team has to finish to win the big one.

We finished first with a power forward (one of the best of his era) and crabbed both finals at home.

It's nothing to do with one player position being a key, it's having a working, skilful team. Something Fremantle lack, despite having a decent number of skilful players in most positions.
