When you consider the alternatives I'm happy to settle for that if it's not a Purple Reign.

I'll continue to see and up the naysayers about our prospects as early as 2018. The following stat gives me hope:
Richmond- season 2016, 13th, 79.5%, lost to Sydney in Rd.23 by 113pts. Coach on brink of sacking.
Fremantle- season 2017, 14th, 74.4%, lost to Richmond in Rd.22 by 104 pts. Coach on notice, put up or ship out.

In comparison, there's more talent in Freo than Richmond. No one gave Richmond a sniff and Freo will be considered to stagnate. Dare to dream.

Where has it ever been said or implied Lyon is on notice? He's cruising, knowing it would cost more to sack him with 3 years left on his contract, and he has Rosich in his corner.

Freo may have talent, but seem devoid of any coherent game plan to do anything with it. Something Richmond clearly have, and work it to the max.

What Freo are selling right now, is continued rebuild, and the bear factor of a new stadium. They'll get mileage from both for the next 2 seasons, to keep the dreamers dreaming.

In comparison there actually really is more talent at Richmond. However expect we will improve next year but not enough to finish in the 8. Hopefully we are still a chance til the final H&A rounds.

So Guy, do we need to recruit a coach who looks like a rich bloke who shops online?

Drubbing, your astute observations suggest that unless we get rid of Rosich, Bond and Roly, we're unlikely to taste success this century. In fact I like to get a feel of what you consider sound leadership.

Sound leadership?
i Demonstrating you have a clue about what you're doing.
ii Having a plan.
iii Telling the supporters about it.
iv Explaining why they believe it is sound and well thought out.
v Selling it.
vi Getting everyone to buy in and support it.

They've offered nothing, other than a vague notion of rebuild (omitting sustained success this time...) and you've gone straight to vi.

If I sound cynical, that's the crux of it. Freo are flogging vague marketing ideas and bugger all else. We've all seen teams go through rebuilds, and not play like a train wreck.

You still avoided the question about Lyon being 'on notice' as well.

Privately I think we're all aware that Lyon's tenure won't last till 2020 if the start of finals don't happen in 2018. The Board won't have the patience to wait till 2020. I.m not naive to think that all they're spruiking is the Cockburn ARC and the Bird's Nest. If they're selling false hope since Roly's arrival what the hell were they doing during the Drum and Connolly era and the Hart administration. We've evolved significantly since then. I'm more than buying what they're selling. Let's not forget our alignment with Peel and how that's fast track our young talent. By the way Richmond lost the VFL GF on the siren. They've swept everything before them. Brendon Gale, Peggy O'Neill and Neil Balme stood strong during a tumultuos year in 2016. Their fans were calling for O'Neil's head and they was a ticket to overthrow the administration. Look how that's turned out. At this stage Drubbing, I see the FFC no worse than Richmond 3 to 4 years ago. In fact Richmond when through 3 rebuilds since Terry Wallace was appointed in 2005. Except they didn't used the word rebuild. 12 years later they've holed it. In 2008, we started what turned out to be a near hole in one.

Richmond didn't go through rebuilds during and after Wallace. They were a basket case and could barely hide it.

The Drum and Connolly eras? They were trying to get Freo off the deck. Connolly spruiked like PT Barnum, and deployed all sorts of manufactured crowd excitement to rev things up.

Truth is, both were dud coaches of the first order.

to predict how Freo will go based on Richmond's rise, is totally naive. Leadership, change and direction starts at the top. If you can see that at Freo, you're amazingly perceptive.

Drubbing while I appreciate your insight into leadership, I am not sure it floats in the AFL. Last year I didn't catch any of what you are describing coming out of Richmond. Internally they may have been, but externally no one got much other than we are staying our course. If you are making these comments from being inside the organisation fair call.

The difference between now and back then is that no-one was really trying to sell anything to do with Freo until Cameron Schwab managed to drag it out of bankruptcy. You can blame all sorts of factors for the club having got into that state but that's a distraction...

RoLy was sold to the faithful as the answer to another sales pitch... the idea that Freo were hopeless and needed him desperately to finally bring about the years of sustained success that had so far eluded the club. The parallel to that pitch was that everything else had to go as well in order to get this outfit up to scratch.

That's a heavy weight combination of sales propaganda. So heavy, in fact that it looks anchored to the floor... dumb b*stards thought they'd got rid of the anchor, didn't they.
