The vision shown between the 17 and 24 second mark of the replay shows initial contact by Cotchin to Shiels jaw. Shiels was over the ball, taking possession and was entitled to the protection of the ball player. Ellis took a cheap snipe at Whitfield, but contact and force will probably be assessed as too low to sustain a charge. Both players have a history of such incidents, but being good blokes they will get off.

The AFL's rules talk about forceful front-on contact, and specifically say you can contest from side on. The rules also give you an out if you had no other way to contest the ball.

That ball was bouncing all over the place and Shiel didn't have possession (so Cotchin couldn't tackle). The alternative for Cotchin was what? Politely wait for Shiel to pick it up? In a prelim? He had to go and he literally couldn't have gone any lower.

RM aside, no-one wants to see players rubbed out of a GF for a marginal case. If you did want to be conspiratorial, I'd also suggest the AFL would want to avoid another situation like Andrew Dunkley getting an injunction in 1996 to allow him to play in the Grand Final. But you don't need conspiracies to explain this one.

He'll play and it will be the correct call.

The AFL's chooks have come back to roost. If they had dealt with Cotchin as they should have when he snotted Lachie Neale, they would have had some wriggle room. As it is, the only way Cotchin plays is if they completely exonerate him, and that just can't happen.

Of course he's unlucky, of course he was in the contest, of course he was trying to win the ball. But – of course – he did so by changing directions, getting between Shiel and the ball and making forceful contact with him. In the process, he contacted Shiel's head, causing a game-ending concussion.

Is he guilty? Yep. Should he be rubbed out? Nope.

If only the AFL hadn't let him off the jumper punch, he'd be playing. But they didn't so he's gone.

Interesting point , We are calling it a game ending concussion he played another twenty minutes or so . He also was on the receiving end of another fairly solid bump at about the twenty minute mark of the quarter , So from a legal standpoint (if it gets to that)Which it will if he get's rubbed out. An argument could be that by him playing on he has added to the problem

I'm not sure what the jumper punch has to do with it zorro. If the MRP finds Cotchin was careless and made head-high contact, the likelihood is a medium impact, which would mean two weeks down to one.

I guess they're not going to be called Ninthmond anymore.

Everyone knows it was accidental high contact which results in a fine but he's on two strikes and will be suspended.

But given he's the captain playing in the biggest game of his life they will conveniently clear him, the same way they let Fyfe off to win the Brownlow and BBB Hall to win the 2005 flag with Sydney.

A subjective, sentimental judgement and a win for the non-PC brigade over legalistic morons.

There's no way he should be suspended for that (as much as I'd love to see the smug look wiped off his smarmy, smug face).

He was contesting the ball, went low and there was incidental contact. It wasn't a bump and Shiel's hands had barely touched the ball when they clashed so he obviously couldn't tackle.

If one of our guys missed a week for that we'd all be howling in outrage.

He chose to bump, got Shiel high. Not deliberate or malicious. It's a fine. Every similar incident has gone that way. Zorro is right, it's the earlier let off for the jumper punch that is the problem. He doesn't deserve to miss next week for this incident alone, but he simply has to get some sanction for it - and any sanction equals suspension with his demerit points. Harsh outcome, but a no- brainer. He was effectively playing on one yellow card and needed to play accordingly. I've nothing against Cotchin. Seems an ok guy when I've heard him interviewed etc.
