Of course Frankmac, if we recruited properly we wouldn't have to try and make an u/18 AA CHB into a forward.

And can we get that person to coach McCarthy as well?

I actually find it rather perplexing that with all the coaches available we still have two key forward targets who even when they get the ball can't be relied upon to have a decent kicking action that can get us the goals we desperately need.

If you do the AFL Player Match-up between Tabs and Darling, you'll find they are quite similar for 2017. Darling has played 151 games while Tabs has only played 51 games.

So its a straight swap then. They get Tabs and we get Darling?

This obsession of acquiring a key forward is getting out of hand. If you don't win the midfield battle, you're doomed. I'm going to use two latest examples. Both games last weekend. Geelong's midfield pulverised Sydney, with the 2017 Coleman Medallist having little to no impact. Dangerfield is not a KPP. He's our version of Fyfe, yet he torched them. Similarly, GWS mids pounded the Slime mids into minced eaglets. Both Kennedy and Darling,( whilst we know the latter is overrated), should have just stayed in Perth. You always hear about the supply to the forward line. Well we've been rubbish and by that I don't mean the number of inside 50s. Yes they help but the mix up forward is so crucial. We saw Stevie J kicked 6 goals last week. Give me a break. Let's just say that if our stars aligned and we have Hogan, Cammac and Tabs up forward. With Bennell, Ballas and Walters there buzzing around. If we win possession at the source and deliver the pill to the forward line, collectively they'll win us the game. You lose the midfield battle, those boys won't be the reason for the losses.

Anyone who can kick goals forward of half back should be in the mix. We lack goal kickers.

Jason - I reckon that is the biggest case of rose coloured glasses that I have seen. You have ranked most of our group as "A graders" even though we finished in the bottom half of the ladder with close to the worst percentage in the AFL.

This was your list of "A graders" - Fyfe, Neale, Sandi, Hodor, B & S Hill, Walters, Bennell, Weller, Mundy, Blakely, Hamling, Cammac*, AAJohnno & Ryan. That is 15 players. We wouldn't be finishing bottom with 15 A graders in our side.

Out of that list I'd agree with Fyfe (based on his pre-broken leg year & late season form). You get a maybe on S Hill & Neale.

For the others:
Sandi - in one way is the most important member of our team, in another way can hurt us as we rely on him so much. Rucks have become less important as the years have gone on. I remember Sam Mitchell saying that he enjoyed playing against Sandi as he was predictable "B"
Hodor - no way an A-grader. Let's temper expectations here. The guy could barely run out a game. He has shown enough potential to suggest in about 4 years time he should be good. If you rank on actual ability now, he is a "D"
B Hill - good footballer and valuable, but no way is he an A grader. He was the 4th best midfielder in Hawthorns team! "B"
Walters - good footballer "B"
Bennell - I remain very excited about his potential, but based on current ability, "D". I'm hopeful with a good preseason, he will be an "A".
Weller - "C" or a "B". Does OK, but doesn't set the world on fire. Good skills.
Mundy - at his peak, "A". Now "B" and on his way down.
Blakely - "B" at best
Hamling - was close to listing him as an "A". Thought he was our most important player this year.
Cammac - "C" at best. Looks like he is great, output is terrible.
Johnno - a shadow of his former self. "C" or "B" at best
Ryan - must admit to not seeing enough of him. From what I have seen, "B" at best.
Ballas - "C" at best. Has not been the same since the grandfinal year.

Of the up and comers:
Hodor looks the goods, however he is 4 years off really playing a part
Logue doesn't look like a footballer at all. Wanders around the contest and seems lost
Grey - servicable at best
Langdon - servicable. Will never be an "A"
Pearce - was at least a "B" before his broken leg. However, never certain on how guys recover from that. It took Barlow at least 2-3 years to get back to his best, at which point age and team selection started to catch up to him. Don't expect too much
Hughes, Tucker - must admit to always getting these two mixed up. "D" at best presently, show potential to get to a "C" or a "B"
Tabs - is our best option at the moment. Will never be better than a "C" or a "B" on a good day
Kersten - "D". Couldn't even get a game at Geelong

Griffin, Suban, Pearce, Sutcliffe, Crozier and just about anyone else on the list (I'm sure I've missed a couple) are fillers.

Most important - Roly - "D" has not shown ability to innovate or adapt to the game.

A dose of reality is needed here. We are currently a bottom 8 team and I think we are staying there for some time.

If you think Walters is anything other than an "A", you need to get to work extracting your cranium from your rectum post haste!

Jason, this doesn't satisfy your specific request with regards to a comparison but it goes a fair way to making the point. Apparently you don't need any top ten picks to make top four or indeed finish the home and away season on top:

I can't believe how good Adelaide's recruiting really is. To think how good their list is with Dangerfield, Tippett, Phil Davis, Nathan Bock leaving and the draft selections they have had. They are so far ahead of every other team its crazy.

I don't think an 'A' is for Fyfe - he's a fair bit better than that.
Neale and S. Hill are 'A' graders, but would occasionally receive marks in the high 'B's. Walters too.
And yet rating players on such arbitrary concepts without any descriptors upon which to base an opinion is like arguing that Deep Purple are better than Judas Priest, or Coltrane is better than Monk, or Paolo Veronese a better artist than Anselm Keiffer.
And most classes have a preponderance of "C" grades - why should a football team within a competition of eighteen teams in a country of only 22 million, where the number of football-aged players in footballing states drops this significantly, be any different. Lots of players get it, but haven't got "it".

Nice article monty, gives me a new found respect for the cows, I very much dislike their supporter base (aka the eagles of SA) but as club, strong culture with a massive rebound after the tragic murder of phil walsh and backing the then assistant Don Pyke. Don has to be up for AFL coach of 2017. Makes a great football story

Dammit Richmond, will you please move that Reply Topic button from near the You Beaut one?? Or give us 10 seconds to 'undo' it??

As there is no way I would ever acknowledge that load of bile by Ricco let alone agree with it. (So, like, could you do your IT magic and delete it for me? Thanks, I really appreciate it)

I started to address what Ricco wrote and realised what a waste of time it would be. Someone with such an over-the-top pessimistic outlook on 'their' team, coaching staff, game style, etc. (yes, I've read some of your other posts) makes one realise that with 'supporters' like this we don't need detractors. Problem is, with almost the entire states' sports media in that 'detractors' category - sites like Dockerland allow for those of us with a more glass half full attitude (you know who you are) to discuss important matters of state with like minded individuals.

Far from having a 'rose coloured' view of our team, I believe I have a very considered and broadly consistent view of my club.

Anyone who thinks Bennell is a D grade player clearly has no clue. He wasn't a No. 2 draft pick for nothing. Similarly, B.Hill played in 3 premierships in his first 3 seasons - in the best team of the past decade if not quarter century. I suppose Clarkson just threw him in the deep end believing the other 21 players could carry him?
Bugger, I've just started doing what I said I wouldn't - but you get my point.

Just as a side note, D grade footballers run around in Sunday amateur comps. To get on an AFL list, you generally have to be in the A to B+ category to start with.

Maybe Ricco's a Weagle in disguise and he read my analysis of Wet Toast - realising how right I was and this was a knee-jerk reaction.

But - whatever.

I found writing the original piece a very cathartic experience and a good use of my time - at the time.

Since then, of course, I've had a total of 4 hours sleep and they've taken the self-administering, pain killer gizmo off me. Crikey, I guess I'm ready and primed to start pre-season training for the Cokers then.

Moptop - I thought long and hard about Walters. The guy has skills, but I think I've seen one game that he has taken charge and had a major influence. Never been all Australian, And I could be corrected here but never won the Doig.

Compare him to small forwards I'd consider "a" grade - betts, Cyril.

Don't get me wrong, he is good, just not great

Jason - fair to say my enjoyment with the club has declined over the past 5 years. Me & my family were members but stopped about 3 years ago. I'll continue to support the dockers and won't switch. Please don't call me a weagle as that is the worst insult I can imagine

I am allowed to have an opinion and yes it differs from yours. Personally I think you are confusing potential with current reality- they are different things.

A side doesn't finish that low on the ladder without reasons. I don't see a way out of our current predicament but hope I'm wrong.

I disagreed with him / her at the time, but think back to bizkits view on last years draft. I think we botched a chance to bring some real talent into the team. Let's hope we don't do the same this year.

And as to Bennell- I know how good he could be and am thrilled he is on our list. But a guy that hasn't played for 2 years and picked up about 10 possessions in 2 games can't be rated too highly.

My view
