as I said above replay fatigue. That Kennedy goal in overtime looked touched to me - but no review. I thought the last free was there but so were a lot of others that were ignored.

When a game and particularly a final is that close any decent umpire would let the game go unless it was a blatant free. To have that game decided like that was very West Coast.

I reckon the Kennedy 'goal' would have come back as umpire's call.

The Shuey free kick is still paid every week. I posted in Tigers thread about Selwood efforts in final quarter of that game. I don't see Cam Mooney carrying on after a Cats close win about how his free kicks shouldn't be paid. Selwood still ahead of Shuey for head high free kicks over the year. I don't believe Umps still get sucked in.
There was no way Petrie should have been penalised for high contact at start of extra time, and then when he was decision should have been overturned.

And the hype is underway at the Worst.
"Heroic" Eric - really!!
And as for any suggestion that this bit of play earned "Mackenzie the respect of non-Power-supporting footy fans everywhere." you couldn't be further off the mark.

Should have been deliberate out of bounds. Only one thing he was trying to do.

I didn't watch, but from reports it sounds like it was a 3-pants-change call for Baz.

I never watched the game either, but with the time elapsed on the clock and a Shuey goal, well I just knew how it had taken place. It is a proven method, already having won them a game this season: get it to the bloke who dives and ducks and who receives more than 20% of his team's frees every bloody week.
I am so glad that after the Richmond game Lachie said that the team trains to play out that type of "football" scenario, for really playing "football" should win the game, especially a final that has lasted for 145 minutes, not a spontaneous touch-induced epileptic seizure in the forward 50 that only Joel Selwood and Luke Shuey would ever receive.
A 90th minute dive in the box awarded a penalty - a way to win, but not to gain even a skerrick of respect.
So glad I didn't see it.

One of the best finals win in living memory.
To be down twice and come back and win in a hostile environment was exceptional.

Does anyone know if you can write in your preferred response for the Australian Marriage Postal Survey? Because after reflecting on the events of the weekend, I don't consider that two West Coast Eagles fans should be allowed to marry.

Now, don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are Eagles fans, and while what consenting Eagles fans do in their homes is their business, I don't think two Eagles fans can provide the requisite balance to parenting to allow them to raise children. It's important that kids can learn what is a hard-won free kick, and what is a blatant act of cheating. They need to learn when to boo, and when to shut their pie hole. Clearly a child can never learn those things with two Eagles fans as parents. And after all, raising healthy, normal children is what marriage is about.

Plus, I'm concerned that if Eagles fans are allowed to marry, teachers will force kids as young as 7 to role play ducking for free kicks.

And where does it end? Like, if we let Eagles fans get married, what next? Eagles fans marrying umpires? Eagles fans marrying inanimate objects like The West Australia or Karl Langdon?

I realise that some may think I'm a bigot, but being raised as a Dockers fan I consider that my views on Eagles-fan marriages must be respected and this is how I will be voting.

Clive bless you all.

In a shock twist, the AFL has totally contradicted its own rule during another breathtaking act of contortion.

http://www.watoday.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-says-high-contact-free-kick-to-luke-shuey-was-correct-in-west-coasts-extra-time-win-over-port-adelaide-20170910-gyecy5.html

Compare...
A spokesperson for the AFL said the umpiring department had deemed the decision to be correct, despite suggestions Shuey lifted his arm to make Polec's tackle take him high. When viewed on replay some have argued it was clear that Polec's initial contact with Shuey was not high, however after the Eagles' midfielder lifted his arm, Polec's contact became high.

... and contrast...
Before the 2017 season the AFL clarified the rules on high tackling.
"Where a tackle is reasonably applied and the ball carrier is responsible for the high contact via a shrug, drop, arm lift or duck, play on should be called."
The clarification also said the umpire would assess "the starting point of the tackle" when considering paying a high contact free kick.

They got in early this week. Usually the umpiring department wait until Monday morning to announce that every single decision made on the weekend was correct.

I have been saying for a long time that the AwFL write these rules to enable them to interpret them to the result they want. The fact that anyone is surprised by the official response is the surprise. Like the way the video replay is used, there is no clear cut decision making. The umpires can do what they like, and the AwFL will give them the green light, based on the "wriggle room" in their writing of the rules.

How could the umpires call for video reviews on 2 scores last night, then not check the Kennedy attempt?
