Now there was an unexpected win. On paper we look good, but it really hasn't gelled - the Mighty Swannies survive another week.

Although I don't particularly like the alignment thingy I believe it was introduced so we could be as competitive as the other states (ie players playing together under one coaching style). All Vic teams either have a standalone team with top up players or are aligned to other clubs, SA the same and the Syd and Brissy teams play in the NE AFL and play in finals. I couldn't find how many players allowed or how many games they need to play - it just said VFL originally allowed 12 players in finals but abolished that in 2011.

can anyone recall how many GFs SF or Claremont won when they were affiliated with our two clubs and did they get booed? Booing seems so petty as not players fault. I don't recall them dominating but could be wrong.

Maybe if play 10 games not just 5 as hardly seems fair regardless of age that they can't participate and get finals experience when played at least 1/2 season at wafl level.

Can't think of a good solution.

The hot topics in the stands yesterday were professional players coming in and playing with part timers, as one bloke was saying they get massages every day while the others are laying bricks, which is possibly not something to google...and guys that have played all year getting bumped from the team to let it happen.

The argument from the AFL clubs was about controlling coaching and development. Cool... that's fine. They get all year to look after that and come finals time it's something like half the season played or something. As it is, you've got 15 AFL listed players running out for Peel yesterday... it's like changing the rules of a comp just for the finals in a way, completely changes the make up of the team.

Personally, I think you should be trying harder to look after the integrity of the WAFL instead of treating it like a very poor second cousin you only let out at weddings and funerals. The WAFC has allowed AFL to dominate, yet you need that WAFL footy humming to develop players.

Who were Claremont and SF ever aligned with?

The idea of Peel being needed in the competition doesn't cut it no matter what the population is, particularly as few people are interested or support the WAFL anymore. They were never competitive before the alignment, always either them or Perth for the wooden spoon. If the WAFL were dinkum they would have done something long before now about the train wreck that the Perth Football Club have become before they introduced another team.

Of course since the alignment hardly any local Peel kids get a game anyway especially during finals because the team is full of Freo players.

The alignment helps the AFL teams but not the non aligned teams. It's got to the stage in Victoria where traditional non aligned clubs have gone broke and disbanded and clubs here lose money every year and rely on volunteers to help keep them going.

I dont really care about the alignment teams coming in and allegedly stuffing up the WAFL. In fact Im glad if Peel put a few spanners in the works. The WAFL has been broken for so long, anything that brings the problems to a head faster is a good thing in my mind.
I lost interest when my team didnt make finals for close on 30 years straight and no one gave a stuff. No equalisation measures. So now I hope Peel win the whole thing again. Didnt hear the Souths members boo when the Perth Demons footy club were floundering due to inequities. Its a disgrace that some clubs always finish at the top and some clubs always finish at the bottom and there is no hope for them, no hope at all. (And Im not talking about Freo)

The existing model is just a stop gap till changes are accepted and made. And as much as people wont like it having two teams in Fremantle - it won't last.
For the moment I'm happy the Thunder is doing better than the (dual citizen) Royals.

Maybe it could be restricted to players with 1-3yrs experience who have qualified with a minimum of 5 or 6 games.

Every WAFL team are permitted to recruit ex AFL players, so what's the whinging about?
I saw Crowley did very well as SD yesterday.

What a lot of people don't seem to appreciate about the WAFL is that the league teams are the tip of the iceberg. The WAFL clubs are the entire organisational structure of football in the state. The point of Peel was to give a focus to that network as the metropolitan area moved south. Peel, like Perth, although very poor at the top level, were still managing to outperform a lot of the clubs in developing the game in their zone and producing some top flight AFL footballers.

The problem with the alignment is that Fremantle lack any sense of diplomacy or civility. There are maybe half a dozen blokes who would actually benefit from playing a few more games for Peel. Most of them are there because management want to win over all the Peel board members who whored themselves out with the alignment deal.

A radical solution would be to have a national reserves competition in conjunction with the seniors competition. This would require some expansion of playing lists. The primary draw back could be cost.
This solution would of course see a further down-grading of state based comps but might allow the amalgamation of some local Perth/Fremantle teams and perhaps the inclusion of some regional teams (Bunbury, Geraldton etc) in a state comp.

Why not just do away with the alignment system, sort out Subiaco getting around the salary cap and actually be genuine when talking about maintaining integrity in the competition. Oh and not take money from the AFL clubs as compensation for an alignment system.

But if you take the money, don't complain when the alignment teams get an advantage.

I can clearly remember opposing the alignment system and others warning that the competition would be distorted but the clubs thought that 100k was sufficient compensation to vote it in. So too bad. They voted for it, took the dough and can now cop it sweet.

When the contracts run out, how about turning down the bribes and voting no
