TOPIC: DRAFT SWAPS

I guess during the 2012-2015 era, we were in contention, so our draft picks weren't in the top 10. Picking up key talls then, later in the draft would have been tricky. So Yeti, planning for Pav's and Luke's retirement had to happen much, much earlier. But in fairness, since our 2014 draft, we have done a little better especially last year with the likes of Cox, Darcy, Ryan and Logue. That is why I think we're going to trade away our Pick 5 which I think will be a blunder. If that's the case, what should we get in return?

Good key forwards are hard to come by. If you use the AFL rankings, the following are the top 10 key forwards, and what it took to get them.

Buddy Franklin: Pick 5 or a 10 year contract.
Josh Kennedy: Pick 4 or Chris Judd
Tom Lynch: Pick 11 (GC had 8 picks in that top 13, so that’s a bit skewed)
Justin Westhoff: Pick 71
Tom Hawkins: Father-son
Jeremy Cameron: GWS preselection
Joe Danniher: father-son
Charlie Dixon: GC zone election
Josh Jenkins: Rookie
Gunston: pick 29

So, you might be able to take a flyer on a late bloomer like Westhoff, or a big lump you turn into a football like Jenkins, but if you want rolled-gold talent more often than not you need to get them in the top 5 or as part of a zone/father-son deal.

If there was a top 5 key forward talent in the draft, we’d be mad to pass. But it doesn't look like we'll get a good one at pick 5. On that basis, it might be better to trade down.

The club should use pick 5 to take Aaron Naughton. No matter what winds up happening in the longer term (and, having seen him play a few times, I am confident of him being good - his ability to find good position also suggests he might easily be developed as a forward), nobody would begrudge his selection.

I'm a bit confused about the big forward we need. In three years time when people are compiling lists of top forwards that their club coulda/shoulda got, Tabs should be on that list. He's big, he's improving, and he's still got plenty of improvement in him.

Yes we should aim to pick up the Rockingham lad Aaron Naughton.

He is a 194cm defender and has played well at Peel.

Johnson will retire next year and I have doubts that Sam Collins is going to emerge as an AFL standard defender. Still a question mark over Alex Pearce due to injuries and Apeness seems to have a buggered knee.

It is possible he could push into the top 15 but I doubt we would consider him at pick 5.

Maybe better of using pick 5 for Jarrod Brander as he looks a good forward prospect and then try and trade/swap for a pick around the 15-20 with the hope Naughton is still available.

PK, shifting the kicking problem to the backline does not solve the problem, it just gives the opposition a chance to score instead of us.

Cox's feild kicking has looked OK to me, he has made a couple of nice passes into our forward 50, it's his set shot that is horrendous, also he would only need to kick with every 3rd disposal in the backline to not be as predictable as Dawson with the hand ball.

rogerrocks, I reckon Tabs could easily be a Jenkins-type; basically a guy taken as a rookie who is developed into a very good second option. Jenkins (like McGovern) benefits from getting the second best tall defender, and is the third or fourth most dangerous forward in Adelaide's forward line. Swap Tabs for Jenkins, and there's a good chance he kicks 40 goals for Adelaide.

But I don't think he's good enough to consistently produce as the primary target, and it's unfair to ask him to play that role.

As for Naughton, if you consider draft picks as assets, then using pick 5 on Naughton is a waste. If Freo is high on Naughton, but the club considers he'll be available at a later pick, then that's when you'd consider trading down.

Agree Morgan, get a genuine key forward and Tabs will kick 40 - 50 goals a year, no problems, as well as give us a hard leading option between half forward and centre.

If Brander is the best KPF in the draft and he's rated by most (including us) at 15 - 20 you don't spend pick 5 on him just because you can. Turn 5 into a combo that gets you him and another in the top 10 or thereabouts and you've done well.

Clubs like the Bulldogs, West Coast, Brisbane and Hawthorn are desperate for the midfielders who are all rated in the top 10.

The problem is we also need midfielders now that Mundy only has probably a year left. We struggled pretty badly through the middle this year.

Where was Ben Brown taken in his draft Morgan? 3rd in the Coleman this year in a side that struggled. Mobile, good mark and straight kick. Just what we need. Probably took Sheridan before him.

Jack Higgins is probably worth considering too.. He is the best small forward in the draft and kicked 7 goals the other day.. He has also been getting 30 touches going through the midfield

Ben Brown was selected at pick 47 2013 draft

We took Michael Apeness at 17 and Alex Pearce somewhere in the thirties

Sheridan was drafted in 2011
