Got to the GF, which we'd never done and it was the most exciting period in our short history and we got overawed and kicked poorly to lose. It'd happened before and will happen again to others.

Great young list and an experienced coach who seems well respected. Unless Alistair Clarkson is free, Roly will do fine. I can't think of any proven coach available who would be better than Roly to make anything positive happen with the FFC given the negatives in coaching a Perth based side. We could always experiment with an unproven coach, that'd make interesting reading for a year and a half.

Don Pyke, Chris Scott, Luke Beveridge, Ken Hinkley, Leon Cameron, John Longmire, Alistair Clarkson were all unproven when they started at their clubs.

In fact Lyon, Eade and Worsfold are the only ones that weren't.

Reminder: many dockerlanders implored the coach to "play the kids!".
You play kids, you get flogged.

Remember Brisbane in the late 90s? Flogged and flogged. Then they dominated. The Eagles in the late 80s? Deplorable.

Things can turn around quite quickly with a young team.

I know time is relative but is it still possible for the turn around to be quick? It's year two of playing dead.

I understand that we'll have ups and downs like what we've experienced this year.
I accept that.
But next year, it needs to change.

My concern remains our lack of potential A graders. Where are they? In three years time we will have Fyfe, Walters, Neale, with some luck Darcy. Perhaps a few good B graders Hamlin, McCarthy? But then it's a big tail of serviceable but run of the mill types. We risk relying on too few for too much. Developing the tail into premiership material is going to be RoLy's biggest challenge.

I have to say the GF was 4years a go and that's a very long time.....But to sign someone that has not delivered , on a 4 year contract extension on a 6 figure pay check that's mind blowing if not reckless .....can't blame Ross for that he just took it

WTB, if your team gels and plays really well everyone looks like an A grader. Chad Fletcher, for example. We've got plenty of players good enough to look like stars in a winning team. Langdon, Logue (assuming he learns how to play), Bennell, Weller, Taberner, and don't forget Dustin Martin, who we snare in the coup of the decade...

I think that's the worst positive endorsement I've ever read. Funny though.

A winning team always looks good doesn't mater who is in it . A loosing team players look really bad . Look at B. hill and the rest if them last week , all our best players looked very bad . You can have the best players and loose in bad circumstances and they look terrible . these circumstances are when you need a coach that can change things around and get the good players playing well again in a game .

Fair enough CA, Hinkley wouldn't have looked too good last year and they've been belted a few times.
A better list would be to include those unproven start ups who failed.

Richmond had a couple of crap decades, not a few crap years. Maybe you could consider this quote from a Richmond supporter: "In the 00's we went through a coach every couple years, it was depressing as ****."

There's no reason we can't go down that sorry path too. Bitching and magical thinking can achieve a lot, and it's rarely positive.

Looking at the state of my team, I think we have a couple of years of patchy performances ahead of us. If you can't stand the heat, you'd be well advised to bugger off for a year or two and amuse yourself elsewhere because magical solutions like swapping coaches or a new game plan aren't going to work. And, fortunately, as far as I can tell, the Freo board and management are in for the long haul too so you won't get to see a coach swap or other BS solution.

In the 90's they went through a coach every couple of years. In the 00's the decided that going through a coach every couple of years wasn't working and stuck with the coaches longer. Terry Wallace bled them dry because of it.

It's a silly point to make. Replacing a good coach too early is as poor a decision as replacing a bad coach too late. The trick is having people in management who know when to make what decision. Which is what Richmond lacked.
