I’d never judge people for how they choose how to spend their limited discretionary time and money. Life can be hard, and you need to find enjoyment where you can. Sitting though guff like yesterday is a mug’s game.
I also don’t have a lot of love in my heart for the current Freo admin, and I can understand people not wanting to tacitly support them by stumping up for a membership. If you wouldn’t feel any different relinquishing your membership after two abysmal years, then jumping back on when we’re good again, I reckon go for it.
But, for better or worse, I’m a sucker and I’ll be a member for life. There’s not much I can do to support my club but pay my membership every year and turn up every week. That’s what I’ll continue to do. Sure, we’ll suck for a few years, but for me that prelim win in 2013 felt sweeter for having always stuck thick with the team. It wouldn’t have felt the same had I, for example, jumped off during the Drum years, and jumped back on once we started winning again.
If I did, the Eagles fans I know (the ones I haven’t been able to cut out of my life) would say I was a bandwagon fan. Would they be wrong? Sure, I could say ‘Lyon this’, and ‘Rosich that’, but I never entertained that argument from them about Ken Judge, so I can’t convince myself it’s a good enough reason to jump off.
Hopefully it will be worth it when we win a premiership in 2037.
