TOPIC: Coach

I didn't see it as 'the lack of interest shown by the team' or as 'gutless' but it was disorganised and it did show a lack experience and confidence. Some players shouldn't have been out there but were played in the hope of fast tracking them. They say you learn more from a loss than a win. Some will no doubt get a lot better and become genuine AFL players some wont.

The argument that doesn't cut it for me is the "he got us to a grand final" one. Great, we didn't win it and that's history now.
Concentrate on more current stats.
i. he's had his worst loss as a coach-two weeks in a row.
ii. we are the first club to have 100 pt losses two weeks in a row.
iii. we are the first club to have suffered three 100pt losses in a season.
iv. we are the first club to fall from minor premiers to 16th the next year.
Simpson coached Meth Coast to a grand final too. He must be great coach too.

Unless someone says something today, I also find it very interesting that no player has said anything to support the coach. Usually when this sort of thing happens (as with Buckley) players say how they've let the coach down, it was our fault not his, we didn't follow the game plan, we are right behind him, etc. In our case.......nothing.

With a 5 year contract, they don't really need to bother.

Larkin - it's probably true as a generalisation that one learns more from a loss than from a win. The team can reflect on particular matchups or tactics that didn't quite go as planned, or particular moments where something might have been done differently.

But I don't think you really learn much from a complete and utter shellacking other than how badly you suck.

Really worried about the basic strength of a large number of our players, do they know their way to the gym? Blokes like Sutcliffe and Sheridan look exactly the same as they did when they were drafted. Bar a few players (Fyfe, Mundy etc) we are weak in the contests, weak in the air and drop tackles. May perhaps come down the Strength and Conditioning dept.

It's hard to cope with the constant bagging of coaches, game style etc. even when we happened to lose the close ones. For those who'd prefer to focus on the here and now, outside of the 22 that played yesterday, the well is dry. Unless you'd prefer Dawson and co return next year. Everyone including me was moaning about not playing our draftees. So we did, most have had 1 or less preseasons behind them. Coaches like Hardwick, Hinkley, Scott (NM), Buckley were under the pump 3-4 years ago about where they were at. Hardwick has had 7 years, to date he hasn't won a final yet. Supporters are the best at passing judgment and that's fine. But we're clueless at what actually happens inside the 4 walls of an AFL club. I've got no doubt that Roly's tenure is on skid row, let's hope for the sake of all, they've got someone better in mind.

Jezza,

you have no doubt that Roly's tenure is on skid row?

This time yesterday, you had no doubt we were on the right track.

The coaches and the game plan get bagged because we, the mugs paying his salary, are questioning what we are paying for. Unless you want to haver a situation where we just fork over the dollars and have no permission to dissent then it doesn't matter if its hard to cope.

Bagging things that don't work is simply a fact of life.

Trust me, I'd rather not have things to bag but if yesterday is what the club means by sustained success, then I'm going to bag the s*** out of the place. I reckon I won't be alone there.

I'm also not going to shut up just becasue my message is unwelcome in certain quarters. 2 years into a rebuild and we have precious little to show for it apart from record losses.

Apparently Rosich has been 'glaring' at Ross (courtesy K Hackdorn, 6PR- usual passing taxi reference). I suggest he gets a mirror and tries to glare himself down

I was a bit concerned by Ross's comment

"I've sat and watched teams rebuild over a period of time, and I'm sure they go through losses and periods like this and need to bring through young players.”

I haven't always been confident that he's on the right path but I thought he was drawing on more experience than just - I've watched teams do this.

I actually found it difficult to understand his umbrage at journalists question(Stevens I think) regarding where the rebuild sat. His assertion that it was inappropriate didn't land very well with me. Then to claim that he didn't have the metrics to be able to answer was unacceptable, I would have thought he should be living and breathing that information.

I'm still of the belief that given the talent or lack of that's walked in the last 2 years, the signs are promising. There's still a mountain of work to do. Every club goes through this phase, some are still in it 5 or more years into it. I'm not sure if in 18 months or so we should be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

The baby isn't even in the bath, that's the problem, the other part is that we prepaid to keep the water till the ends of time with a squillion dollar contract, and by god, we'll keep that stinky water!

How the hell are we going to trade players to this club this year? Think they are saying, yeah, hell yeah, Freo, that's the way I'd like to ply my trade!

And while I'm here- "...admiring our administration for properly backing the coach with a long contract to shield him from the fickle outrage of fans after a couple of very poor games" Is this seriously what we are up against? Supporters bereft of knowledge, or possibly poached eggs painted on their face for eyes, or did I miss the sarcastica font again?

Jezza - the clubs that are still rebuilding 5 or more years in are the clubs who have completely screwed it up and who - rightfully - have attracted the scorn and derision of the rest of the competition as a result.

Is that really your benchmark?

But even so, let's use Brisbane as the litmus test. Trying to be objective, I think that, despite win/losses and ladder position, Brisbane look like a side playing better footy than us. That is after 1 season with Fagen, picking up from the mess that Leppitsch left. If I was tracking our respective trajectories, I think they have shown more improvement this season than us, and I'd think Brisbane fans would be heartened by what they have seen so far.

Bribane's list has an average age of 22yrs 355 days (we have 24yrs 225 days), they have average of 49 games, we have an average of 78 games per player. They had an exodus of quality over the past 3 years largely due to the coaching setup previously - our movements have been deliberately planned and structured (Balow, Mzungu, De Boer etc) or foreseeable (Pav, Elvis). They have had 1 season under Fagen, our group is coming off a stable 5 year base under Lyon.

I don't think we compare well, given all those factors.

Speaking of poached eggs, glanced through The Worst while out for breakfast. Hated reading the headline-Home Truths. Fremantle are the worst side in the AFL. More so because it's true.
But what stunned me was Roly's comment-THIS COMES AS NO SHOCK!!!!! Wtf? It came as a bloody shock to me. He's implying that he expected two 100pt losses in a row then? That we would be utterly uncompetitive and there was nothing he could do about it?
Then to top it off Aretha Franklin is singing R-E-S-P-E-C-T in the background.
