TOPIC: Rebuilds

Just wondering what our rebuild is going to turn out like. There are a number of clubs that have been forced to build a team from a low ebb in recent years with a few differences in circumstances. Teams that I see that fit into this conversation would be Gold Coast, GWS, Carlton, Melbourne and St Kilda.
All of these teams have been subject to a few smashings over the journey as we were yesterday.
GWS and Gold Coast have had some pretty significant advantages in achieving this objective and yet two entirely different results. I hope we are not in the Gold Coast mould.
The other three teams are in slightly different stages of their rebuilds with Melbourne the most advanced followed by St Kilda then Carlton. Melbourne are genuinely in the race for top eight but don't seem to be a threat to top four. St Kilda are a chance to make the top eight with their best on a given day able to compete with the best teams. Carlton's biggest achievement this year, listening to their coach, has been to stop the massive losses and put themselves within striking distance at the end of the game to have a chance to win.
Four of these teams are receiving their fair share of positive commentary and yet none have any guarantee of delivering the ultimate prize. What are people's thoughts and where do you think we are in our journey along this path? Would be nice if this doesn't fall into Ross is a crab or a genius debate. He may have an influence on the outcome, but it could very well be another coach that takes the group forward in years to come.

We have a lot of good players and we will get a lot more with our position on the ladder over the next 3 - 4 years then with time we should be able to have a good crack at it . I am predicting we will be there in about 6 -7 years . Without the picks that other teams have been gifted it is going to take a while . IMO.

Sides that loose by 100 points are bad sides. We have lost by close to 100 points 3 times this year and last year.
This rebuild will take time IF we get it right.
I am not sure the culture at freo is right to keep our young talent.
Other than Blakey - not too many are rushing to sign on ie crozier , Darcy tucker, Langdon etc
Than we need to make sure we keep making right descions for long enough.

I agree with you exceed , and I don't think there will be a lot of players rushing to join us at the start of what probably will be a longer process than most think .

Sometimes you can do a total mad dog rebuild and still be a sad b*stard on a postie bike, too.

The poor sad b*stard on a postie bike wouldn't be happy if he keeps getting knocked off it all the time neither .

We have a great track record of keeping players at Freo. The young players that make the bigs are all showing something.

I reckon we're in a good spot, back to contending in 2-3 years.

Since 2010, we've missed out on finals 3 times. Other then when we first came into the compettion, we've never regenerated a list like we have in the last 18 months. When we last played Sydney in 2016, we've had 16 new players in our side compared to their 4 yesterday. The teams you've mentioned like Carlton, Saints, Brisbane, Suns and Melb have been on a rebuild path forever. Yet in 18 months we've doubled our win loss ratio, while playing 7 debutants this year. Other then Brisbane this year, the two 100 pt. losses we had was against two juggernaut teams who I believe will be playing in the GF this year. I see us returning to the finals next year and while you might brush away a statement like that, I believe our list profile and growth despite a couple of heavy losses, is primed to trend upwards. After this years trade and draft period, where I've got no doubt we'll add a couple of 'A' listers, our footy team will be as good if not better than the current Melbourne side. Lets not forget we beat them at the MCG early this year. There's finals and sustained success from 2018, despite some who's balanced view see doom and gloom unless we find a new orchestrator.

I recall in 2014 watching a GWS team lose games regularly by 100 pts. When you play so many kids, no matter how good, this happens.

I have my frustrations with the coach but the talent is there and in two years time we will be challenging again.

Sydney will win the flag.

Agree with nearly all you say Hype.

But Sidney will not win the flag.

At least it''s the last team in the 8 that I'd like to see win it.

Agree with the talent being there but no team this year has copped beltings from teams in any position on the ladder from top to bottom like us.
Expect losses of course but even in a rebuild these margins shouldn't be accepted as par for the course. Other less experienced sides don't do it. So why is it so?

Hawks 53 pts Brisbane 70 pts Adelaide 100pts WC 71pts Port 84pts Geelong 48 pts Sydney 104pts

To be fair CA, the first two losses were before we started to blood our youth. Since then we've beaten sides that are currently in the 8 or just outside. A few of those wins, many would have expected a loss. If we go after another KPP or 2, we're going to be dangerous, and that's not being too biased.

I'd like to be optimistic and say that we will be a top 8 side next year and challenge for the big one in the following years but I see the teams in rebuild mode have been there for a few years. Bringing in youngsters and getting their bodies fit enough to withstand the rigours of Afl for sustained periods and then compete and win a premiership is not a short term process; add into the equation what injuries can do to a footy club list and we start to understand that a lot has to go right for ultimate success.
I'm hoping RL will bring in the players we need to go forward but I don't think he will be there when we next play in a GF.
I'd like to be proved wrong.
