I think the major issue is RoLy's lack of willingness to change. Think that's what everyone is calling for.
Yep, he's got young kids in,
yep, everyone is playing with 36 players around the ball,
yep, RoLy' has had us in finals more often than not, yep,
RoLy got us to the grandfinal.
Yep, we are in the first year of a damned long rebuild.

There are plenty of excuses for what we are currently seeing.

But what we aren't seeing is any change of 'style' except of the odd game where it seems the players 'are let free' ...ie Rd 3 and Rd 4, and maybe last week. And we certainly aren't seeing improvement of skill level.

To me, the large loss games are indicative of player's 'not buying in' to RoLy's high energy, high effort game plan.

Are they being recalcitrant?, are they buggered?, have they "had enough"?....we'll never know. ?

But what we do know, is that we've seen nothing new from RoLy for 6 odd years now....and, well, things that don't change, don't get far.....they get swamped by the competition...and that is what we are seeing right now....

It's a common theme and has been since RoLy took the reins... even from his days at the Saints, the word is his game plan is intensive and there's a lot to learn. That was the rationale in his first year here as the best team Freo had assembled up til that point floundered around playing the ugliest football seen since Victor Borge played phonetic punctuation with the Stee Threply Ugsisters.

Then it was the intensive demands of his gameplan being hard to sustain over the course of a season with a light dusting of allowing for RoLy to adjust to crossing the continent every week causing the team to fall away.

Then it was players not being up to scratch. Which is just not a good thing for a senior coach to say in public, really.

Then it was whatever it was and here we are all over again watching young blokes struggle with the intensity of a game plan that might actually be out of date by the time they learn it and another generation of talented players will be wasted for the cause again.

Every time we see the players apparently let off the leash they win or look good trying. There's a lesson in there somewhere but I can't quite see it for spin.

Clearly I'm not an expert on gameplans and structures and other stuff that some profess to know. What I'm tired of hearing though is that any other coach but Roly would have won us a flag or two and be challenging again this year because their gameplan would be a successful one. Ok so we're buggered and let's get someone else in because since 2012, it's all gone pearshape and it's not getting any better. Any suggestions who our new coach might be?

Further to what Jezza said there is no way we are playing the same frenetic, high intensity game plan we played in 12/13. Roly appears to have learned that it's not sustainable.

Every coach in the comp talks about outnumbering the opposition at the contest to win possession. Our game plan is not greatly different from anybody else's. Our forward cattle and execution levels are another thing altogether.

Pretty sure we all knew the results of the last off season "reboot of the game plan" by the end of round two this year, it was a shocker that forced Lyon's hand into playing the kids a lot sooner than expected. The quick fix of bringing in four players from other clubs had failed dismally and the decision to axe some players (Barlow, DeBoer, SCOS) while keeping others (Dawson, D Pearce, Sutcliffe, Sheridan) was also questioned.
None of the arguments about blowouts being caused by the kids running out of steam account for the fact that we got pounded whilst playing one of the oldest team in the league in those first two rounds.
The complete fall from AA squad (didn't make the final team but came close) to barely able to play for peel of ibbotson in a couple of years to me is the canary in the mine shaft. The guy lost the ability to make a decision with ball in hand, that is a coaching/game plan issue. You could see in his face that when he went to do the instinctive thing he'd stop himself and then look to do the game plan thing which wasn't an option so then froze and did nothing, literally just stood there until he was getting tackled.
This is just my opinion but I really don't think Lyon knows what to do now that the rules have changed to eliminate the "ugly" look of the game (limited rotations, 10m exclusion zone, deliberate out of bounds).
As for who would I get to replace him, I think we couldn't any worse with someone like Kirk at the helm, does anyone recall why he left and went back to Sydney?

Let the players be free? What dopes that even mean? Our centre square work was clueless on the weekend. Our run through the middle was almost non existent. Neale had less than 10 touches? Why? He wasn't tagged, was he? There was a lack of real team work and ferocity. And one of the real hard things to do in footy is to run and run again when the beneficiary is the team and not your own stats. Who would have wanted to be a Freo forward on the weekend? And, I saw, even with limited tv perspective, too many players jogging around, not giving the gut busting chase in the first instance. Kersten, who has all the gifts to be a good player, just doesn't work hard enough, chases with no real intent. At least Ballantyne makes the extreme effort to pressure. Kersten was not alone on the weekend. We can blame coaching, we can blame players, but surely none of them loved playing the game on the weekend. We do have a lot of young ones who on other occasions have showed much more. As supporters we are all probably guilty of being impatient, but we have to remember the times we have looked really strong this year. We are capable and as the team matures and some of our older players move on, we will threaten again.

"Neale wasn't tagged" Every stoppage saw him and Fyfe grappling with opponents before the ball was thrown up/in. Fyfe was being held before he took possession in every contested possession he won. The only time he gets a fair crack at a mark is when he runs from 20-30 meters and leaps threrough the pack, and then an ump will pick out a "shepherding " free against some one (Kersten the week before) Every minute of the game Neale is being scragged. Oh that's right you said tagged.
