There are many things that amateurs like us can pick up. Some of us play different ball sports, which require the same basics of ball movement, regardless. I see more strategic nous on here, than I've ever seen executed at Freo, by professionals.

In my own teams' case, many of our problems are related to being over 45, unfit, lacking skills in areas, and not playing full-time. We accept that and work on the things we can work on. And yes, we run till we drop and rotate heavily too.

It's taken us to finals in our first year, most of us not even having played the game before, against teams that have been together for years. I don't know if it's a great analogy, but it does show what is possible, if you work hard on strategy and are flexible enough to adapt to what the other team are good at.

Why is it so hard to see that at a pro football club?

'We slip over more than any other team in the comp. That can be coached'......really? That was a flaky start to a critique of the coach,

It beats me how players slip over when they are standing still guarding an area 15m from any other player .

It all comes down to balance.

And we are very unbalanced ... in more ways than one.

Maybe they should go to those 'Stay on your feet' classes' that are for seniors.

Just remember what pressure does to your decision making and skills at the most basic level and then sharpen your pencil.

Pros get to practice pressure. A lot.

Pressure is very instinctual, I'm sure practice is rather gradual, unless you are top shelf.

There were 7 first year players in our side today against a team with more than 1500 AFL games experience. No amount of work rate would have helped against a finals toughened, hungry and imposing team. Sydney fielded 15 players who played in the GF last year. There's nothing going to stop them this year. In addition they're near on 100% of their salary cap. That's the reality.

7? Name them.

Logue, Deluca, Cox, Ryan, Darcy and ????

They had 3-Melican, Newman, Hayward.

We had 4 first years players:
Ryan
Logue
Darcy
Cox

Plus we had other players playing their first year with Freo:
Hamling
Hill
McCarthy
Kersten

But they are not first year players. Sydney also had first year players and we both had players with GF experience. The difference wasn't so much in the experience of the players but how well they were prepared and managed.

You can talk up the coach all you like Jezza but he doesn't look when under scrutiny

You'll never dent Jezza's silver lining. Like Jeff Beck's, it's unkillable.

The reality he fails to recognise is every single team turns over players every year, and plays rookies.

Some teams still manage to keep rolling into finals year after year doing this. Even if they clear out the zimmer brigade. Hawthorn, Sydney, West Coast, Geelong, Adelaide, Port to name a few regulars.

What, oh what, could be the difference in them managing it better? Whatever it is, it certainly ain't the cattle they have to work with.

There's never been a time where I've felt more protective of our footy club than now. We're really 18 months old from winning the minor premiership. Since then we've lost our best forward and defender. They're irreplaceable. We're probably the third least experienced team in the Comp with no top end draft picks other then Logue in the last 5 years. And yet we've won more games than Brisbane, Carlton, Roos and the Suns. There's little more I can say about where we're at. Surely we're trending upwards despite our horror losses.
