I think he is making excuses. Again.

He set the bar.

I thought you wanted him to be open? Not sure it's an excuse, but giving his opinion on where the forward line is at (yes, yes...he might need a road map).

And on that "no excuse" thing, it'd be fair to say that it was more relevant as a front and centre message for a team in contention (although you can still have no excuses regarding competing at your current realistic level). You can hang on to it as a rhetorical device if you like, but I'm not sure it gets to anything meaningful.

Well Gawd help us if "working on our attacking craft" over a preseason is anything like the preseason of a coulple of years ago where we worked on our skills and 'trying to play like Hawthorn'....

....I wouldnt be been expecting much! Another cop out, another excuse....

Still....no finals; lots of blokes getting over injuries now; a few blokes who'll not have done much for an entire season; a bit of experience and gelling for an inexperienced playing group...maybe a couple of recruits...

Everything points to a flying start next year....

Cletus, about flying starts. That's what I thought in 2016. And 2017.

Realistically:
i) Harley wasn't exactly amazing last week against Subiaco; and
ii) Round 1, 2018 is vastly more important for him than any of the rounds remaining this year.
In fact, I'm fairly sure there would be a large number of people working for the club who would be well aware of just how important this coming summer is to their prospect of ongoing employment.

If he doesn't get out on an AFL footy ground and prove to himself that he can still run around then he'll go bonkers over the summer.

I agree with that. Thinking about it further, there would be immense benefit (both for him and for the fans) in Harley getting the opportunity to play in front of the home crowd before the end of the season.

Get him right for WAFL GF and he can start next year fresh.

Shane, Harley's a summer away.

RideoftheV, I may very well of got Lyon all wrong on this one. But I read it as, " its complicated so we need an offseason to map it out and fix it". There has been a bit of that over the past couple of years.

I say bring Harley on for the Bombers in rnd 23, give him a run then and let him kick a few goals.
He can be our "stay at home" fwd and not leave the 50 arc.

If you can play a young bloke like Deluca just to see how he goes then you can play Bennell to give him a bit of a morale boost.

I'd tend to see the alternate hypothesis as it being a chemistry thing and development thing hypen. Given the thing about where blokes like McCarthy, Kersten, Cox etc have been thrown in there and be the axis around which we're trying to build a forward line, whereas ideally they'd have some time on the periphery first. If you were just to break the elements down and write them on a bit of paper about another team you'd probably understand there's a bit of work to be done and it'd take a reasonable amount of time.

Also I'd plump for Bennell to get some form of run this year too, if possible, even if only to help his acclimatising for next year.
