Sounds like a broken record (vinyl that is), and we are all witness to Hawk's superior kicking skills on the weekend. It was mal Brown who once said that Maurice Rioli would be twice the player if he became more proficient on his right foot. Outrageous some might say, the great Maurice a better player? But how true. It was with dismay that I witnessed a 200 game player be forced to kick on his opposite foot the other night, and it looked like a slapstick routine. Terrible! As juniors but surely at AFL standard players are instructed during training to absolutely kick on the wrong foot, on the run, as would happen in a game situation? Some can kick very well on their opposite foot...Walters. S Hill, Ballas, Fyfe...but it seems some have just not made it a part of their training. Shouldn't this be standard skills training for all? It is well known that using opposite side of the body enhances confidence and decision making...But, our kicking was so awful on the weekend, and we know that we have some great kickers, so what is it...confidence or simply not encouraged to take risk...

To take risks you need a plan . When the plan is vague or non existent it makes the risk very risky .

Its part confidence part inherent skill and part team plan. I have no doubt Roly has a plan .....he just hasnt told anyone what it is yet! When Lewis joined the Demons the first training drill was a 20metre pass on both sides under pressure...have a look at that team as it sits ready to play finals. Player vs player we have a side as good as Melbourne. Its the drill requirement of all the players at Hawthorne and now Melbourne to hit a team mate on both sides otherwise no game in the firsts!! The blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff .

One of the primary culprits in terms of skills for the past few weeks is B Hill. Clarkson and the Hawthorn coaching panels over the years have struck me as knowing a thing or two about the caper. Do you think they just let B Hill take the skills sessions off for the last 5 years, or would you acknowledge that players themselves have a significant role to play in learning these skills.

A combination of player skill and coaching drills. Brad is a huge example of a player overplaying in an effort to drag the team across the line......when you are surrounded by talent it rubs off.

Hill's skills were never brought into question during his time at Hawthorn but like most players who come to us we manage to turn them around for the worst.

I always liked the challenge to using both sides of the body and I always assumed it was also good for the brain. There was some talk about players only being allowed to use their preferred side at training though I have heard that debunked – but if it was the case even only for some it might be so that team mates know exactly where to run to make the best positioning ie as in being predictable – those little onepercenters might come in useful on game day. Hooking it around the body though is often just a case of moving it forward at almost any cost and whether it is off the left or right side is of little consequence and you'll see that dozens of times in any game. Though I'd hope that even adult players can improve their skill sets.

You're just noticing it more because he's a Freo player. Did u watch every hawks game ? I've seen him miss running goals in the past. He's taken his game to another level this year. Highly skilled and a great player

Sure, the skill of kicking is the most important one in the game. Equally, the ability to read the flight of the ball in the air. The good teams, the ones that tear others apart off the boot, are those that can lead a player into space - reading that (when the ball is in the air) becomes the most important skill ahead of the ball. Bradley is one of the best with this - not surprisingly, his brother is our best for leading a player with his kick.

Marking the ball, contested or otherwise, is crucial - like a tackle (possibly the most fulfilling when you're playing the game), you gotta make it stick.

I think the first step is all our players becoming skilful on their preferred side.

Morgan, a couple of mitigating factors with Brad Hill's kicking - he sprints close to a half a marathon a game, that must have some effect and he always tries the tough kick like Dan Pearce and you have to take that into consideration.

I'm not saying he's a bad player - he's been great and you can't put a price on how his run helps create an option when there might not otherwise be one.

But his kicking has been pretty bad.

I have no doubt he's buggered when he kicks, but wouldn't that excuse hold true for all players? Other than Dawson, I haven't seen many players stroll around. Hill might cover oodles more ground, but it doesn't necessarily follow he's more buggered.

There are few perfect players, which means making a trade off. You'll forgive Hill's kicking because of his elite runnning. You'll forgive Spurr's kicking because of his bravery and discipline. We just don't have enough players whose best attribute is kicking. I'm just not sure you can train that into players.

His kicking hasn't been bad. I would describe his kicking as being inaccurate. But he gets the ball where it needs to go.
