That's exactly my point RM. You only look for things that go against us, never the ones that go our way. I would be pleased that maybe Johnno got away with that but you would immediately justify it. If it was the Hawthorn guy with an arm over Johnno's shoulder you would be calling the umpire out for not paying us the free kick.

I see the positives in Walters getting a better deal from the umpires but you're still not happy and want more.

Do you think that every game against us the opposition supporters go away happy with the umpiring thinking that Freo got screwed by the umpires and they got the best of the deal from the umps...again..... every week?

I agree with you on plenty of things just not the umpires hate Freo and will do anything in their power to deliberately make winning hard for us theory.

Davo, I'm one diehard Freo supporter who thought that Logue gave away a free in that example. Every day of the week. If the jumpers were reversed you'd say the same thing.

NWe get a rough trot but so do other teams and it's because you've got 27 umpires each week trying to interpret the rules of the game which are too vague and are changed on an annual basis. The 'protected area' is the worst one of the lot. We coppped one last night and two against West Coast where the infringing player was not in any way interfering with the flow of the game. In fact, in two of them the infringing player was closer to the man on the mark (his teammate) than the player with the footy. They should borrow from soccer's off-side rule - if the infringing player is not interfering with play it's not an infringement.

The other one which is interpreted inconsistently by different umpires and week to week is shepherding the player in the mark. It was brought in largely to stop Hawthorn doing it and yet last night they did it with impunity.

The umpires are the least of our problems.

Completely agree with you Flag about that protected area rule. The most ridiculous rule in football. To penalise player who is having no influence on the game with no intention of interfering is infuriating.
I don't remember why it was introduced but wish they would get rid of it.
This should be something the coaches take to the rules committee. Surely they're not happy with it either.

What the coaches should be taking to the rules committee is a montage of the throws that are deemed as legal disposals. The rules are there, so why aren't they interpreted. You either kick it or you hand ball it (i.e. punch the ball off a stationery hand). You are not allowed to throw it, put it on the ground and tap it to advantage, or simply hand it to a team mate. I'm just a tad too young to remember the outlawing of the flick pass, but that would not even be looked at in the modern game. Play on. The water closets got away with blatant throws today, one of which resulted in a goal. I'm sick of the way century old standards are being ignored by umpires, and it has now got to the point where the commentators don't even acknowledge that it has happened. Our game is screwed. unrecognisable as the game I grew up playing and watching. It is in it's death throws. Even Collingwood could not fill Etihad today.

Maybe I'm the only one who is seeing some similarity and I know that there is suggestion of swing man or midfielder as Logue best position but to me this kid could be the next Alex Rance (coincidently they both come from the black ducks) not sure if he has true KPP size but he has a lot of the aspects of a loose back intercepting type (josh Gibson) kids got speed and dash and just needs some time in the bigs to find his feet.

Yep PD, his choice to attack the ball a couple of times in I think the 2nd quarter was more instinctive than I thought a basketballer would be, and when he went for it he did not hesitate. He ran hard to the fall of the ball and then took on the lines with a long kick down the ground. One of those occasions the Hawk in his way did not really want to be there either, so he probably has a bit of grunt in his bodywork.

His attack on the footy in the second was more instinctive than I thought it would be, coming from a rower. You'd expect him to be useless without an oar, but he got the ball with his hands... The guy played football all through school. Who here didn't play more than one sport when they were growing up? There's no reason to think he isn't an instinctive footballer.

From his draft profile: "Logue showed his versatility later in the year playing as an inside midfielder in a colts game against West Perth, picking up 33 disposals, 25 contested possessions, five marks (four contested), four tackles and six inside 50s."

Now that we're over the SPS malarkey we can enjoy his next 10 years.

Correct Agarn, umps are least of our issues. The difference in kicking skills and spread was most obvious. And Logue has got all the tools, not sure of his opposite foot kicking. But an attacking half back or midfielder in the making. when he attacked the contest and read the play he looked great. Must be encouraged to do more often...as with other speedy players, ie Weller, Tucker and Hughes (surprisingly quick top end speed).

How many clumsy, inadvertent elbows to the face would you be willing to take in order to receive the benefit of being taken under Dawson's wing? If the answer is less than 'dozens', I'm not its worth it.

However, Dawson reaching out to Logue in this way does provide support for my sincere belief that curly-haired people are unfairly maligned and need to stick together.
