Jezza - mate - were you at the game? When the ball came to a contest there were hawthorn players in numbers behind the ball, feeding the handpass out until someone had space to kick, at which point they did quickly and generally long to a leading player or another contest where the hawthorn player was expecting it. When the ball was coming in, they had the box or zone working and they had players in position to get to the contest to make this happen. And they had tall players in back and front who had a license to hit the contest and take a mark when the ball come in long to offense or attack. And some of them were young players. With and without the ball, when you looked down the ground you could clearly see how they were setting up, and how they were going to move the ball when they got it. Same as they did 2 years ago and the 5 before that.

And yet we seemed completely unprepared for their system, and had no answers from the first bounce to the last.

2 questions for you Jezza:
1. Do you consider that adequate preparAtion and good coaching? Compare that to Clarkson who pushed extra numbers into his back zone after the success of that last week against us.

2. Please describe our system? I genuinely can't see one. But happy to be corrected if someone can find the method. When we were good under Lyon we had the full field press and brutal pressure, and you could see the set up across the lines and down the field. But that is gone and there just doesn't seem to be any replacement as yet. Forget personnel - there are enough regular players in our side, and the entire squad trains together. In 18 months a coach should be able to instill some basic structure and rules into a side.

He finished on equal terms with Mcevoy last night statistically, and I would not know what people expect from a barely 19 year old sole ruckman.??
The giants he has matched/conquered this year are unbelievable!!
Hes gonna have a few blunders, hes gonna show some inexperience... there's no way we can blame him for our 'crap performance'
Thought his tackling was great, and there were also a couple of good marks and telling, clearing handballs. Again!
And I'll remind people that when Sandi is there, we completely dominate the ruck, but still manage to stuff clearances, create trouble for ourselves, lose games etc etc.
The problems are skills and gameplan, people, not our young ruckman!!

I'm not having a go at him at all and if you let your emotions settle a bit, it's perfectly compatible to think Darcy is punching above his weight and even score votes in the B&F, yet still over the course of a match be outpointed by a vastly more experienced and match hardened opponent.

So this weeks excuse is that the Box Hill Hawks development programme is too good for us and their skills are much better.
Yes Box Hill won a premiership in 2013 but you might remember Peel won the WAFL grand final last year.
Why are their skills so good and ours so bad? Year after year. Is this not the coaching panels job or do we consistently recruit players with poor skills?
If Box Hill are the benchmark why did we pick a player from them(Collins)and then never play him?
It's not like they have had the luxury of early picks but they still seem to find good players. Burton is the favourite to win the rising star and they had an Irishman play his first game last night that ran through our forward line with ease and use the ball better than us.
We were really at full strength except for Sandi whereas they had Birchall, Rioli, Gibson, Frawley and Stratton out.

More excuses but never anything to do with coaching style or game plan.

How about execution of a game plan as an excuse. We also badly missed again someone who could have taken a mark in the forward line....Roly answered the known problem for what must be a record time in a post match presser. Cox would've been good to have in the forward line last night, he can take a mark.

Puopolo was also out for them.

I'm not sure anyone could name what our best 22 is at the moment, evidenced by the jovial conjecture regarding selection issues that occurs here daily. Would we categorise Deluca, Nyhuis or even Ballas in his current form as definitive best 22 players, for example?

I was at the game hoping that we would win. What I saw frustrated me but also it showed that only a few were running as hard as the Hawks players. The brutal season has caught up with our youngsters most with only one preseason under their belts. Ballas, a 30 year old has hit a brick wall not having a preseason under his belt. That's another reason to our capitulation. The structures and all the football jargon that most want to spruike
only stands up when experience is gained. That's through preseason after preseason. I'll use one off Roly's expressions, it's "finger nail deep analysis" that's being made here. Let the rebuild continue.

Maybe you were mia at the time pp, but I think we did see a lot of promise for the future in rounds 3-9. Also there was some more recent form in having the youngest side to win a couple of weeks ago, plus but for an uncharacteristic miss from Son Son, we would've taken the choccies at Geelong. We can realistically expect to see lots of ups and downs yet, given the usual young teams trajectory.

Seems everyone is happy to say the coach doesn't have a game plan but no one is looking at the possibility that he in fact has one but the players don't always implement it.

I'm with Jezza. We have a young side who got beat up by a better team on the day. Its not rocket surgery. Any team who gets beaten by over 30 points looks dishevelled and we were but there are reasons. Anyone who thinks the coaching panel couldn't see what was happening doesn't have a heart. Anyone who thinks they know better is probably deluded.

the game plan has not changed much at all,according to luke.
listening to pr on way home he said ,it got us there for the gf,and finals.
his opinion is that it will take time for all the new players to gell with it.
sounds logical to me.
whenl i heard him explain it that way.
he said ross is a very god coach,utmost respect for the way he coaches.
thats a pretty good endorsement from a highly regarded player.
now that he is out of the system he could be very negative.
